Aug 12, 2018 - tour of Steven Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum Dulles International Airport

Another travel day with a stop at the Smithsonian, National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, near Dulles International Airport west of Washington, DC. This is where the big stuff that will not fit in the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC is displayed. What an incredible collection of air artifacts and planes including a section for about every category of flight related items you can think of. The exhibits go from the earliest concepts of possible manned flight to the latest in space including the orbiter Discovery of...

Oct 6, 2013 - Leaving for Italy!

As told by Catie: The day after the wedding, September 22, we left for Italy. It was a whirlwind of a day, we only had about 5 hours of sleep the night before from the after-after party, so we were already tired before even embarking on our overnight flight. For a full day recap, we woke up and checked out of the lovely Comfort Suites to drive back to my house with my dad. We forgot we weren't coming back to our suitcases after the wedding (or at least I didn't), so I rocked my rainboots and dress from the night before with full on hair &...

Oct 6, 2013 - Day 1 - Naples, and arriving in Positano

We had a smooth landing into Naples -- there were 2 shuttles waiting for our flight to bring us to the terminals. We were one of the first to get our bags from baggage claim, there was thankfully no crazy claims to go through, and then our driver was waiting front & center for us at pick-up! We were in and out of the Naples airport in maybe 20 minutes, so a great welcome to Italy! Our drive from Naples to Positano was about an hour and a half give or take. Our driver was very nice & gave little tidbits on history in the region as well as a...

Aug 4, 2012 - Marielle's Birthday Party

I slept at Corinne's room and it was so cold that when i woke up, my phone was wet from the cold. Titi Marie came so that means Mom and Papa are in Virginia. I ate cereal while waiting for my Mom to come pick me up. When my mom got there, i jumped on her and kissed her for awhile. Papa was still at the other house because he took a nap after the drive. We got ready to go to the outlet. It was just me, my mom and papa. We shopped for clothes and earrings. It was so hot out. When we got to the outlet, there was a lady on a wheelchair and she...

Mar 18, 2009 - Chantilly, Virginia

Okay so I'm back in the US and thought I would do a quick update on my week home. My flights back to Chantilly were SO much better than the flight to Switzerland in January. Thank goodness because the painkillers make me a little nauseous and turbulence would not have helped that situation. I had a bit of an awkward adventure on my flight from Copenhagen to Amsterdam. I was walking around the airport in Copenhagen trying to find a bathroom before the flight (surprise, surprise I know I have a pee problem). I passed by this restaurant and...

Dec 29, 2008 - An Adventure is Born

Just a note to let everyone know how this Adventure came to be. Jonathan and I were originally going to India and Nepal to include Buddhist and Hindu temples and the Ganges. From there up to Darjeeling for a train ride and tea. Then onto Nepal and an elephant safari or two. But during the last six months there were multiple bombings. One a block from the hotel we were to stay at in Delhi. Then there was/is labor unrest with the tea pickers in Darjeeling as well as other violence involving Separatists in Sikkim. So I cancelled the trip and...

May 4, 2008 - VA, Chantilly National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world. Visitors to the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center admire the Monocoupe 110 Special Little...

Oct 22, 2007 - Chantilly, Virginia

10/22 - 10/24 After about a 30 mile drive we stopped at a hotel in Chantilly, VA for three nights. The hotel was within about five miles of where we lived nine years ago. Our plan was to see as many friends as possible but we failed miserably. We did manage to visit a few: Peggy Lowe, Paul and Bernadette Durkin, Eileen Wilson and Fred Lillis (Fred is Ken's doctor and he spent some time checking Ken out). We missed many friends but we will return. We did get a chance to drive around the old neighborhood - huge changes as large development...

Sep 11, 2007 - Air and Space

Out near Dulles Airport is the National Air and Space Museum. Although there is a similar museum on the National Mall, this museum resides in a hangar and displays a multitude of airplanes and space craft. We took a guided tour of the museum, saw an IMAX film of the Red Flag air force maneuvers, and took a ride on one of the simulators. This was one cool museum and a must see - especially if you like airplanes (and even if you do not. Quite frankly, I expected to be bored at this museum. But I was fascinated with the many types of planes on...

Sep 10, 2007 - Was both a good day ... and a hard day ...

Today was Kim's and my 13th (!!) Wedding anniversary. Although the good news was that I had a day over the weekend to see the boys and Kim one last time before I shipped off to the east, the obvious reason for it being so hard was it was also the day I had to fly out of Columbia on my way to Kuwait. One other note-worthy bit was our time spent at JFK awaiting our next leg to Ireland. As a group we were waiting in the terminal for our buses to take us back to the plane, and three very nice Italian ladies (what looked to be 1 great...
