Nov 10, 2015 - Postcard 3

November 10, 2015 Road Trip Journal: Postcard 3 From Gainesville we headed toward our first destination, which was the Luray Caverns. Just a bit of history. These caverns were discovered in 1878 when a man and his nephew came across a sinkhole in a field. After digging for 4 hours, they exposed the largest series of caverns in the east. We have visited some caves in the west coast, but these caves were more than impressive and certainly a geological phenomenon. It took two hours to tour these enormous caverns. The sheer size of the cave...

Aug 23, 2015 - Happy Birthday, Kerry

Happy Birthday, Kerry! Kerry, loves having his birthday here. Flo spoils him. Up early this morning for the iBelong Breakfast. No winners, other than Flo, this year. Kurt Busch was the guest speaker. He was very entertaining and I think made a lot of new fans. He even signed a hat for a little boy. The hat was for his brother, Kyle; but the little guy didn't care. After breakfast, we said good-bye to Mark and Sandy. Kerry visited with Flo and Carl while I started packing. We decided to go see Mission Impossible this afternoon. We filled the...

Aug 22, 2015 - It's Bristol, Baby!

Finally, It's Bristol Baby! Flo had a guest last year that was a fishing guide. He didn't stay here this year, but brought enough fresh fish for a fish fry. We had delicious fish, fries, coleslaw and leftover salsa and hummus. Bristol is trying to have a blackout at tonights race and Kerry doesn't have any black shirts with him. I suggested stopping at Wal-Mart but he couldn't wait. We had to visit the tents last night to get him a black shirt. He wanted me to carry it in my backpack and he would put it on at the track. As I was packing, I...

Aug 21, 2015 - Race Night

It was a fairly laid back day today. Breakfast curteousy of Flo, and visiting. We went to Fatz, a local chain that serves Calabash chicken. It is their specialty and Kerry craves this chicken. I have to admit, it is some of the best I have ever had. After dropping Hailey off at Flo's we headed to the track to see the midway and get to our seats. They have a new fanatics super store at the tracks now rather than individual haulers. I know this is in the early stages, but I have to say, I much prefer the haulers. The staff know the...

Aug 20, 2015 - Bristol

After an amazing breakfast by Flo, we headed down the hill to State Street and Fanfest. I had to be in line by 1:00 pm in the hopes of getting a wrist band to meet Kyle Busch later that day for a picture and an autograph. Only 300 were being handed out. Hailey and I got in line while Kerry wandered off. We got two wristbands before we found a seat to wait for Kerry to find us. They ran through the wristbands quickly and only had a few left when the guy asked if I wanted one. I said I needed one for my husband but he wasn't around. He gave...

Aug 19, 2015 - The Biltmore, Part II

Breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then back to the Biltmore. Today we stopped in the gift shops since they closed on us the day before and then we went to the gardens. The flowers were amazing. Some of the palm fronds had to be close to two feet long and over a foot wide. These were on the normal potted palms you would have in your house. THey had little gazebo's with grapes over the top. Luckily for Kerry and Hailey, there were a few bunches on the benches. They were able to sample the concord grapes. Super sweet was the verdict. Now we are...

Jul 26, 2014 - Travel to Memphis, TN

Drove from home to Bristol, VA yesterday afternoon/evening then finshed up today arriving in Memphis around 3:30 CT. Total of about 15 hours and nearly 1,000 miles. It was interesting coming across TN on I-40. It seems that basically you have the 3 main metro areas in the state (Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis) and little else. That is in contrast to to an area like the I-95 corrider where it's often difficult to tell when you leave one metro area and enter another. Took a drive through town just to get the "lay of the land". Looking...

This Land Is My Land

Apr 6, 2014 - Sullins Reunion Week-end

A wonderful week-end shared with a special group of ladies. Our first two years away from home in a sheltered environment. How naïve we were back then, which made this place so special for us. Left Tallahassee early Friday AM, txt from Chris the bad storm last night had her flight cancelled. We kept us with her progress thru the day, missing flight out of Atlanta, late to Bristol. Darrah and I met on flight in Atlanta, waited at airport for Chris's flight, which she did not make. Linda there to pick up Eddie, we caught a ride into Bristol...

Aug 25, 2013 - Two Out of Three Ain't Bad

August 23 Kerry and Butch were both moving fairly slow today. A little too much celebrating the night before. We had a delicious breakfast of waffles, fruit and yogurt before heading out. Had a birthday lunch at Cracker Barrel and then off to the track. Good grief it was muggy. We found this new (for us) product called a Frosty Towel that is saturated with citronella and lemon grass and then frozen. It keeps you cool for 6 - 8 hours without rewetting. It really did work. They also keep the mosquitos away. We discovered it was Kenny...

Aug 23, 2013 - It's Bristol, Baby!

Sorry for the delay in updates. We have been busy visiting with old friends and making new ones. The last few days have been action packed and great, especially if you are a Nascar fan. August 20 We stopped at the Pikeville Visitor Center and purchased an audio guide for the Hatfield and McCoy feuds. We set out driving through Pike County, Kentucky hitting all the sites that were of interest to us. I was driving and we came upon the Randall McCoy homestead site and I drove past it due to the fact we had to pull into someone's driveway....

Jul 26, 2012 - Bristol, Virginia

We left Clarksboro, New Jersey Monday morning about 0800 heading south and turning west at Baltimore toward Moscow, Iowa. We ripped once again by tolls at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and the Delaware and Maryland Turnpikes to the tune of about $50.00. As we turned west at Baltimore on the 695 bypass we started to smell a strange and foul order. We changed to I70 west bound and rest areas are few and far between on this section of I70. We finally found a rest area at the Maryland Information Center on I70 and we opened the wet bay and...

Apr 21, 2012 - Bristol, Virginia

Today we left Chattanooga around 0830 and we drove 232 miles to a campground in Bristol, Virginia. The campground was not published in any of the camping books we have nor was it published in any of the publications at the Virginia Welcome Center. It happened that one of the woman at the Welcome Center knew about this campground and she gave us a map and provided us with directions. It is small campground with moderately level concrete pads with 30 amp and 50 amp electrical service, water and sewer. There is no office and we were told to...
