Paddle faster - but in which direction? - Saturday, July 4 Someone in the south recently came up with bumper stickers and tee shirts that say “Paddle Faster - I hear banjo music!” If you’ve never seen the movie Deliverance that plea may not seem too funny, but if you have seen the movie it’s got to make you laugh. The bumper stickers and tee shirts sell like hotcakes here and I laugh every time I see one. This weekend we went to two concerts. Both featured local bluegrass bands (with banjos). ‘Grand Canyon of the South’ is a predictable comparison - Tuesday, June 30 Monday we kicked back in our campsite and worked on this journal, then on Tuesday we disconnected and went exploring. Our first stop was at The Lodge to pick up our two day old receipt for the campground charges. The poor guy who rents out the sites is busier than the proverbial ‘one armed paper hanger’ and to make his job just a little worse he doesn’t have a credit card reader. Jun 28, 2009 - The scene changes . .

. . to the towering mountains of Coal Country - Sunday, June 28 Leaving Kingsport, Tennessee we returned to Virginia and got back on The Crooked Road north. This time The Crooked Road coincides with another heritage route called the Country Music Highway, and it’s not long before the two music routes join forces with the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail to give the visitor a triple dose of heritage that’s guaranteed to impress.
