Apr 26, 2017 - Goose Point Park

Lots of fog outside this morning--good excuse for a slow start. About halfway to tonight's campsite, we came across a Farmers' Market and a Visitor's Center for the Blue Ridge Parkway which we'll drive when we hit the road again. We picked up fresh corn (probably picked just this morning), heirloom tomatoes, and some luscious looking strawberries. We had the corn and tomatoes for dinner and have plans for the strawberries in the morning. Ummm. Then we walked across to the Visitor's Center and picked up some information on the Blue Ridge...

Friday, May 27, 2016. We left Longwood and drove 100 miles further west to Goose Point Park on Philpott Lake (just west of Bassett, VA - home of Bassett Furniture) and 14 miles west of Martinsville, VA - home of the famous 'paper clip' Martinsville Speedway and site of exciting NASCAR races. 2016 Summer Trip

May 27, 2016 - Blue Ridge Parkway

Saturday, May 27 2016. A sunny warm day. A beautiful day for a ride. So we took the rag top off Deb's Jeep and headed west a dozen + miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway. A first for Deb. Sharon and I had pulled our 5th wheel over about 150 miles of the Parkway some year ago. We drove about 60 miles of the Parkway south before returning to camp. The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 470 miles along the crests of the southern Appalachians and links two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. Deb's former home in northern VA...

Nov 15, 2015 - Time to head South

This morning it was 29 degrees. It took a long time to warm up. Planning my trek south to Port Orange, Florida. I will be leaving next Sunday. One week to go here in Virginia. It have been a nice stay here and I have enjoyed the changing of the leaves for Autumn. I have made some new friends of the other Volunteers and Beth and Bob are special. I do feel like I am going home and feel a little like I want to stay there for a while. I guess time will tell.

Oct 24, 2015 - Surrounded by Autumn

This is why I came to Virginia for the Autumn. The last couple of days have been spectacular with its color. It seems every turn I take the color is just so beautiful. The windy roads here and no shoulder make it hard to stop or pull over to take photographs. These photos were taken right here in the Volunteer Village where I have stayed since the first of August. Time is coming to an end. I will be packing up the end of November and heading to Port Orange, Florida, where my sister lives. We were both born in Daytona Beach (Port Orange is...

Sep 5, 2015 - Wine Harvest

Since I had enjoyed tasting the wine at Hamlet Winery and talked with Virginia, owner with her husband of the Vineyard, I volunteered to help with the harvest. 8 am Saturday morning I showed up at the winery, was handed a pair of clippers, and directed to the area where Viognier grapes were being harvested. Quite a few people were clipping full clusters of light green grapes and tossing them in tubs. The volunteers worked in twos, one on each side of the row of plants, slidding the tub along as the de-graped the vines. The temperature was...

Aug 5, 2015 - New Friends in Virginia

I am in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at a Volunteer Village of USACOE Philpott Lake in Virginia. I was at the 80th Annual Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax last night with fellow volunteers. The LOVE sign is carted around the state for anyone to take their pictures and they ask that you post on Virginia.com. These are a few of the fellow volunteers. We haven't posted on the internet yet. I have only been here a week and the friendly group of volunteers have welcomed me in like an old timer (well maybe that isn't the term I want...

Jun 25, 2013 - Sweet Spot

June 25, Tues Philpott Lake, VA - Goose Point Corps of Engineers Park We are now at a CoE campground with a great view of the lake, the beach, and the boat dock. We were here last year, so we knew this would be a good stop. Our drive up from Lenoir, NC was uneventful, although frustrating at one point since the map read one road as East/West while the signs said North/South…Huh????? Oh, well – what’s another U-turn in our travels? And, I will add we were happy, happy, HAPPY to get off that mountain campsite! (even though Steve said it...

Summer 2013 Stories

May 3, 2012 - Goose Point Campground (C.O.E) Philpott Lake

This morning we slept in later than usual for us. Even though it's a travel day, we still took our morning coffee together as we watched some news. By the time we reached Mabry Mill on the Parkway, having covered about 75 miles, we both agreed we need to get off the "hurry up and get to Newfoundland attitude." As you may have noticed, we have been dallying. After some discussion this afternoon, we decided to stay here in this beautiful park through the weekend. In fact, we may stay the full 14-day limit, who know? What we do know is this,...

Sep 14, 2009 - Another day in paradise

From Goosepoint COE Campground in Bassett, VA ... Today was another day of mostly relaxing. I am still not feeling up to par and not very energetic. But it sure has been nice to have some time off with no schedules to meet. We did take a couple walks around the campground. The campground is mostly empty, and it's very nice and quiet. The weather was once again perfectly gorgeous, so it’s hard to complain about much of anything. For lunch we had seafood left over from last night’s dinner. It tasted as good today as it did yesterday....

Sep 13, 2009 - Exploring in our kayak

From Goosepoint COE Campground in Bassett, VA ... Well, it yet another picture perfect day for us here. It was cool enough this morning that I turned on the furnace for about an hour when we got up. My coughing seems to determine when I get up, so I was up first leaving Charlie in bed for another half hour. I made a pot of coffee, and then worked on trying to get my blogs caught up. It was great as I sat at the dining table enjoying the lake views while I typed. The bass boats start whizzing by about 6:00am, and are then followed by an...

Sep 12, 2009 - Rest and Relaxation at last

From Goosepoint COE Campground in Bassett, VA ... We slept in late for us this morning, until about 8:30am. Our bed on the fiver is so comfortable, I think it’s even more comfortable than our bed at home. The mattress is a very firm mattress, probably pretty cheap, but we put a memory foam mattress pad on top which makes it sleep very well. We awoke to beautiful blue skies and very breezy conditions. Charlie put the awning out last night and strung his colored lights on it. I keep watching the awning blow in the breeze today wondering if...
