Sep 10, 2014 - South Hero Farmer's Market and Pinkie Survives again!

2014-09-10 – Farmer’s Market and Pinkie Survives Another Round We went to the local South Hero Farmer’s Market today. It is very small but the products were wonderful. Vermont is very much about organically grown and hormone free stuff and the products sold at the market all fit that definition. The church ladies were selling pies and we bought a tiny raspberry one that was wonderful. We also bought some goat cheese spreads, fresh lettuce mixed with nasturtiums and pansies, some fruit spreads and salad dressings. Last but not least, there...

Sep 9, 2014 - Pinkie's Triumph!

2014-09-09 – “Pinkie’s Triumph” We are staying at Apple Island Resort which is an RV/Trailer park on South Hero Island in the middle of Lake Champlain. Do not let the designation “trailer park” fool you. This place is beautiful with large, extremely well kept sites and gravel access roads. It is a huge place and boasts a lovely fitness center, pool (including daily water aerobics), library and community center, and hot tub. The place is immaculate with over 25 workkampers who live and work here and do the daily maintenance and check-in....

Sep 8, 2014 - Burlington and the Super Moon

2014-09-08 – Burlington and Super Moon Today, we first went to an Apple store in South Burlington to try to figure out how to attach photos to the trip journal and emails from I-photo. Last year, it was easy to simply browse the I-photo library and choose the selection but now, apparently, Apple has changed the system and you have to export photos to another location on the computer and then, from that location, choose the photo. It took the Apple guy awhile to figure out how to do this as well so I didn’t feel so bad but why can’t they...

Sep 7, 2014 - Kayaking Lake Champlain

2014-09-07 – Kayaking Lake Champlain Today was a beautiful day; high of around 78 degrees. We launched the kayaks from the marina located across from the campground and paddled about 5 ½ miles out into Lake Champlain, around some private islands and along the shoreline. The Champlain Islands from the road, would remind you of the Delmarva peninsula or other relatively flat area with a lot of trailers, some in good condition, and some…not so much. Same with the homes. There are lovely old and new homes and then…ones that have seen better...

Sep 6, 2014 - South Hero, Lake Champlain, Vermont

We finally left Doylestown on Wednesday, September 3rd and traveled to Timothy Lake campground in the Poconos where we had left the RV for a few days. Left for New York state on Thursday and got to Glens Falls where we planned to stay at the Walmart, but they didn't allow overnight parking (unusual but apparently a township ordinance) so we drove to Rutland, Vermont's Wal-Mart. There wasn't a lot of space in the parking lot though plenty of space behind this large shopping mall that contained the Walmart. There was also an Amtrak station...

Dec 20, 2013 - On The Lake Champlain Islands

Our spot on Lake Champlain was lovely, peaceful and nigh perfect, so we stayed there a lot. Many friends came to visit us and enjoy the Islands. Bea and Don, parents of David (one of the campground owners, live in Pennsylvania and spend most of the summer at the campground in their trailer. We also got to know their other children and grandchildren who came to visit. What a sweet wonderful family! Bea and Don love to putter and work on gardens, clean-up, dock building and whatever needs to be done. Everyone at the place is friendly,...

Dec 20, 2013 - Dog Days in Vermont

Soleil accompanied us most places we went all summer. On two occasions, we especially went to dog events for Soleil. Stephen Huneck's Dog Mountain, near St. Johnsbury VT is a special place for dogs and their people! Stephen Huneck was an artist who had his studio, home, on 150 acres on a mountain, which he shared with his wife and three dogs (two black labs and a golden retriever). He first wrote, drew, and sculpted them in wood. His books are about Sally, one of his black labs. Check out: http://www.dogmt.com for more info and to see his...

Dec 19, 2013 - Settling Into Vermont

We made it to Vermont, crossing Lake Champlain on the ferry from Plattsburgh. Our site for our motor coach was in a new place -- Keeler Bay Campground and Marina in South Hero. It's much smaller than the place we were for the last few years, does not have a pool or lots of the activities or golf course. But, it's located right on Keeler Bay of Lake Champlain, with our site only a short distance from the Bay. What a view we have! We also have direct access to the lake, to put in our kayaks. ##photo=Site #11## David and Mike, long-time...

Dec 10, 2013 - Leaving Vermont to NY to Ohio to Kentucky

Most of the summer seemed to be spent undergoing tests of various kinds to find out what was going on with Pete. The ultimate diagnosis was Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The doctors and cancer center in Vermont is excellent, but we knew we could not spend a winter in our RV motor coach there, nor did we really want to stay with friends or rent an apartment. Winter is not Pete’s favorite season, to say the least. We contacted our friend Kathy Hargis, who put us in touch with her brother, Jeff Hargis, an oncologist at a well-known cancer center in...

Dec 9, 2013 - Summer 2012 in Vermont & Kentucky

Our time in Key West FL (April & May 2012) was both fun, beautiful and challenging, especially for Pete. He became very ill, lost lots of weight, and did very little. He saw a doctor there who changed his diet, not that he was eating much, but he still was drinking lots of pop/soda. That was no longer an option. He got some meds with a recommendation to get to his doctor as soon as we returned to Vermont. When he was well enough to leave, we skedaddled to Vermont, as indicated in Trip Journal #2. In Vermont, we had a good summer, with Pete...

Oct 9, 2013 - Change of Plans

The photo's above have nothing to do with today........ Today we planned a nice, comfortable run from Saratoga Springs in New York to Riverdale in New Jersey. Got a nice late start, rolled out of the Wally World parking lot a little after 10, moseyed (a technical term for driving at 61 mph) down the NY Throughway, past Albany, heading for The Garden State. 84 miles from our target for the evening we are at a rest stop, killing some time, when Pathfinder starts to worry about the weather on Thursday. We are planning on meeting some old...

Oct 7, 2013 - Saying "Goodbye" To Apple Island Resort

That's what we've been doing for the last few days. This is the hardest part of workamping...making such good friends then leaving, knowing that you may never see them again but hoping that you will. Tonight we had dinner with a couple we have become close with this summer. We've shared lots of meals, drinks and campfires. They will stop by tomorrow morning to see us before we leave...it will be especially hard to say goodbye to them. We really hope to work with them again. After we did laundry this afternoon we stopped in the office to say...
