Jun 24, 2013 - Massachusetts to Vermont

Since we needed food, but hate to take the trailer in store parking lots, Mom and I took the truck to Walmart and a grocery store this morning, about a mile from the RV park, while Dad got the trailer ready to go. By the time we got hooked up and on the way out of town, it was 12:15, 86 degrees and HUMID! AC on and we were off to Rutland, VT. On the Mass Turnpike, my Dad said what I'd been thinking...."how did those early settlers ever find a patch of clear land to build homes and grow food?!?!?" Seems every bit of Massachusetts has thick...

Oct 13, 2012 - Day Eight Matamoras ,PA through NY, Conn, MA to Rutland, VT

Well let's get it out of the way. Skeeter is right once again, Amish buggies are gray and Mennonites' are black. Nice tries from Lydia, John and Mike. Keep trying. We are going to stump Skeeter yet. Amy, we had fried chicken, pepper chow-chow, pepper cabbage, Polish sausage, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes with gravy. No Amish meal could be complete without "shoo-fly pie". All very good but not as good as your mama's. Simple trivia question: What are the ingredients in "shoo-fly pie"? Amy, you would experience sudden death as an Amish....

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Jun 30, 2011 - Packing

I am packing my stuff tonight and making sure I've got everything. I am SO excited!!! We have to be in Burlington at 9:30am tomorrow because we have to gather together before our plane leaves at 10:21am. I just got a new book that I haven't read yet for the plane ride. It's called "City of Bones" by Cassandra Clare. I just read the prequel, "Clockwork Angel" and have high hopes for this book. It doesn't stand a chance(I will be bringing a spare on the plane and a IPod with movies and fun apps). I'm also bringing my arctic yoyo for the...

May 25, 2011 - Rutland, Day 4

We let the motel know this morning that we would be staying another night, and they told us that we would have to be moved out by Saturday morning, as they are booked for the weekend. Yikes! But all is well. Earle’s called us around noon today. They found the problem was excessive gunk in the fuel tank. They deduced it by removing our fuel tank, and putting in another tank with fresh fuel. When they did it, the rig ran great. So, they flushed out our tank, and put it back in, and we should be able to pick up the rig sometime tomorrow...

May 24, 2011 - Rutland, Day 3

We found a Comfort Inn that allows dogs (for a fee) and is much, much nicer than where we were, so we packed up and moved down the road a few miles. We now have a full-size toilet, room to move around, and no mold! We stopped at the repair shop this afternoon to check on the progress. They still haven’t isolated the cause, but they told us that the problem has gotten worse. In their test drives today, the rig was coughing and kicking even on the flat land. We told them that if they identify the part(s) that need to be replaced, we will...

May 23, 2011 - Still in Rutland, VT

Bill drove the rig to Earle’s this morning, with me and the dogs following him in the car. It’s ironic that there are three ways to get to the repair shop, and none are truck or RV-friendly. All three ways require going over very old bridges that hang high above the river. The first bridge is covered, with a 10 foot height clearance (our rig is over 12 foot tall). The second bridge has a 3 ton limit (we weigh 39k lbs). The third bridge is very narrow, with square steel plates that make scary clanking sounds when you drive over them (like...

May 22, 2011 - Rutland,VT

Our trip came to an abrupt halt yesterday when we started climbing the hills into Vermont. The rig kicked and coughed, and couldn't make it up the hills. We pulled over, and Bill changed one of the fuel filters (the rig has two, but we only had one spare), but that didn't work. Next, he tried swapping the 2nd filter with the one he'd just removed, but that didn't work, either. We were stuck in the middle of nowhere, and the only place we found to pull off was a muddy (it's still raining at least a bit most days) ski resort parking lot about...

Oct 29, 2010 - The Summit Resort, NH enroute

Well I am back on the road again. When I last posted I had just discovered a leaking radiator on the Motor Home. I took it in for repair and after just over two weeks it is all repaired. It has a pretty new custom made radiator. Best part is that the extended warrantee paid for all but the deductible. While it was in I had the state inspection done, and the generator and transmission service done. This morning before I left I winterize the water system. So when I get home it will go into storage. In the spring new tires and then it is ready...

Summer 2010

Sep 20, 2010 - Rutland, VT

September 20, 2010 – Rutland, Vermont – Iroquois Land Family Camping We’ve spent the last several days here in Vermont enjoying some cool but dry weather and enjoying the state. Vermont is a beautiful state with lots of sweeping green lawns and fields with white houses and red barns. To be sure, not all the houses are white and not all of them have barns, but that is always the way I think of Vermont and is often what I see in Vermont. Plus it is fall and a lot of people decorate their homes and business for the fall season. We have been...

Sep 11, 2008 - Vermont and the Green Mountains

What a wonderful week! We've had good weather, but also our first real signs of fall. One morning we woke to the high 30s. There has been minimal leaf color change, bt it should happen soon. We didn't use the bike much, but we did get gel seats for it, so long rides will be much more comfortable. [We've put 4,000 miles on the bike!] This has been a "family" week. Sue has 3 cousins, and their spouses, living close to the Lake Bomoseen campground where we stayed. It had been 20 years or more since we had seen any of them. Cousin Pete and his...

Jul 6, 2008 - Drive to Rutland, VT

Our mileage today was 182. Total Trip Miles to date: 2,599 Today we left Roxbury after a fun 5 days. We stopped in Albany, New York and took in a movie,"Hancock". On a scale of 1 to 10, we give it about a 6. We browsed through a few stores in the mall and then headed for Rutland, Vermont. As we drove through this charming town, a concert was taking place in the park. The band was playing in the gazebo and everyone was in lawn chairs and on blankets, watching. Tomorrow we head for Burlington, Vermont.

Sep 6, 2007 - Lake George, NY to Rutland, VT

We toured around Lake George and enjoyed the State Park on the south end of the lake. The route into the Green Mountain state is truely through green mountains - beautiful. We made it to Phil and Janet's home in Rutland around 5pm. Its been 7 years since we've seem them, but it was easy to pick up exactly where we left off. Phil and I spent our formative years together and we have a lot in common. We'll be re-telling stories over the next few days and having a lot of laughs. The parking is great, right in the driveway with water, electric...
