May 17, 2013 - a day in northern Utah
We headed to Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City to tour the grounds before the organ recital at noon in the cathedral. Non-members are only allowed in the visitors' buildings, the cathedral, the library, and history center. There were at least four weddings going on in the temple during the short time we were there. The flowers around the grounds are gorgeous and the grounds are meticulously landscaped. There were probably 50 of us waiting at the doors of the cathedral for the recital. We were given access for photos about ten minutes...

May 16, 2013 - Arches National Park
We started early from Moab for Arches National Park which is only five miles north of Moab. Beautiful in the morning light. Hiked the shorter trails! It has really been warm the last few days. Decided to head for Salt Lake instead of trying to do Canyonlands this afternoon. LOTS of traffic from 50 miles out of Salt Lake. Desk clerk directed us to a great little salad buffet restaurant Sweet Tomatoes, $9.99 all you can eat, huge salad bar, potato bar, pasta bar, pizza bar, soups, breads, and desserts. What a bargain. And they gave us a 20%...

May 7, 2013 - Salt Lake City
After Moab we decided that Salt Lake City (SLC) deserved a visit. Being a state that has lots of Mormons, particularly around SLC, I figured there would be very little crime. Well, that was not quite true, according to the news papers there has been lots of murder and mayhem in the city area. Most drivers don't take much notice of speed limits, like El Paso they seem to think speed signs are just a rough guide. I guess they figure they have god on their side. Two separate crashes (fatals) on the same morning, proving their god doesn't like...

Karen, James & Danielle took us on a tour of Temple Square in Salt Lake. Very beautiful area of gardens, art and impressive buildings which is the central headquarters of the LDS. (Mormons). A lot of history . There is also a large shopping complex next to Temple Square that is open air but can be close off in bad weather. Had a nice meal at Olive Garden.

Yellowstone Park; a bad idea for us this time because of this cold front from Canada. When we woke up Friday morning it was cold; the temperature had dropped to -8 C overnight and we were fortunate that nothing of our water system in the Roadtrek was damaged. We read in the paper that West Yellowstone had been the coldest spot in all of North-America including Alaska. So we decided to head south and we arrived in Salt Lake city on Saturday. Today the temperature went all the way to 18 C. Salt Lake city is the headquarters of "The Church of...

Sep 25, 2012 - Day 20
Sept 24 Craig, CO to Salt Lake City, UT Traveling through Colorado has been a disappointment - other than Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park it is pretty desolate, dry and barren. Today we were treated to a rainbow on one part of our drive. We hit quite a bit of rain today, but unfortunately it didn't clean the outside of the coach very much and believe it is in need of a good scrubbing. Yesterday was lots of golden and bright yellow Aspen Trees - today coming into Salt Lake City on highway 80 from the east we saw the more...

Sep 20, 2012 - Pony Express RV Park, Salt Lake City, UT
We had a great drive from Elko, passed the Bonneville Salt Flats and miles of salt on both sides of the road. What was interesting was all the waterfowl that we saw in the salty marshes along the road. Everything from ducks to geese to gulls. Lots of sailboats on the great salt lake. We arrived at the Pony Express RV Park in Salt Lake City around 2:45 today. This is a fairly new 5 star park with all the amenities. Unfortunately the pool is closed for the season. Since Debbie didn't have the pool to enjoy I serenaded her on my guitar. We...

Sep 11, 2012 - Great Salt Lake
While I was in the north-western area of Utah visiting friends, I stumbled upon an interesting body of water. It seemed vast and expansive, similar to a lake. Although not very many, there were a few people swimming in the lake. I decided to go out and look around a bit. I discovered that it was actually saltwater rather than freshwater, very odd. I was curious, so I decided to do some research. I came to the conclusion that this salty lake was probably a remnant of a prehistoric lake named Lake Bonneville. The reason being because there...

Aug 25, 2012 - Len and Nancy's Visit
Our good friends, Len and Nancy, were able to join us for a few days this month. We did a little touring of the area with them -- visiting American Fork Canyon, Sundance, Antelope Island, Temple Square -- but also had some time for just "visiting", which included one or more of our grandchildren - at any particular time.

Our dear friends, Don & Eileen where wonderful tour guides on our recent trip to Salt Lake City. They took us on a beautiful drive thru the Wasatch Mountains from American Fork, near their home up and around thru Sundance and back down thru Provo. It was a beautiful sunny day perfect for a country drive. The Wasatch mountains are tall and majestic from all sides. We explored Sundance, which is owned by Robert Redford since 1969 and is nestled at the base of the 12,000 foot Mt. Timpanogos. We enjoyed our picnic lunch on the beautiful...

RV miles driven today: 277 Total Trip miles 5683 Our drive from Idaho to Utah was about 6 hours. The Wasatch Mts. in Utah had a strong haze over it due to smoke coming from fires in California. The Pony Express campground where we will be staying for three days, is brand new and very nice, with paved pull-throughs and a side parking space for our cars. Its also located right off the interstate with easy access to downtown Salt Lake City.
