Sep 22, 2017 - Salt Lake City UT

After we got set up at the mediocre Salt Lake City KOA we headed downtown for a late lunch then to the grocery store. Always better to do it in that order as my impulse buying kicks into high gear if I’m hungry. Monday morning was set aside to make about a bazillion phone calls. I scheduled the house for service at the local Freightliner shop, booked the Jeep for some work on Thursday, spoke to our RV sales dude and then a cabinet guy in Red Bay about some future work. And Michele did her share of calls too, then about noon we moved to...

Sep 9, 2017 - Salt Lake City UT

Only 183 miles to Salt Lake City but once in the city environs the traffic is a nightmare and it's raining besides. The sites in the KOA are much smaller than we remember and it's very crowded. The Utah State Fair is right next door. Then miraculously the sun came out and the evening was lovely. However there was no way we were driving that truck in Salt Lake City traffic. So Uber it is. Worked like a champ. We went to Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Never thought we would find one Catholic Church in Salt Lake City but there were several....

The Summer of 2017

Aug 30, 2017 - Salty here

We have been in Salt Lake City since Sunday night and we leave for Moab tomorrow morning after a stop at a Verizon store to see if we can get Debi's phone fixed. This is the fixit stop. First thing we did Monday morning was to get the brakes fixed on the RV. They were really good to us at Auto Motion, got us in pretty quick and only charged us $163 to put in all new brake fluid and adjust all the brakes. Works good now. Salt Lake City is all about the Mormons. You can get a free shuttle into town but you have to listen to all the virtues of...

Jul 26, 2017 - Salt Lake City, Utah

Instead of taking I-84 to I-15 to Salt Lake City, we took two-lane Rt. 93 straight south out of Twin Falls. This route would take us through the little border town of Jackpot, Nevada, (which consisted of about 3 casinos, 3 discount liquor stores, and a campground), then to Wells, Nevada to pick up Interstate 80 straight east to Salt Lake City. The main reason I did it was so we would pass the Bonneville Salt Flats which are about 111 miles west of SLC. I’m not sure it was such a good idea, though because we got stuck in a road closure due...

Jul 3, 2017 - Salt Lake City

We toured around Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 2. Not much traffic which is a good time to just ride around and see the city. It seems to be a clean, well manicured town. We stopped at the State Capitol Building. It's the fanciest State Capitol we have seen so far. Temple Square was our next stop. It being Sunday, churchgoers were in abundance as were tourists. Impressive buildings and grounds. On July 3 we took a ride thru the Wasatch National Forest to see Cottonwood Canyon. There is a nice resort at the top. It seems this is a big ski...

Jun 13, 2017 - On Our Way

We got up at 3:00 a.m. and drove to Savannah Airport only to find out that our originating flight was delayed to the extent that we would be unable to make our connection in Chicago to Salt Lake City. United gave us another option of flying to LaGuardia, then to Denver, then to Salt Lake City. This would dramatically increase our airtime, but having no choice, we accepted. The agent waived our checked baggage fee because we were inconvenienced. Nice. One nice surprise - as we were descending into Newark we got to see the Freedom Tower. All...

Jun 9, 2017 - Salt Lake City Day Two

Fri., June 9th – Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City is the heart of the Mormon Church headquarters. We toured the 1.4 million sq foot Conference Center, the Tabernacle, the North and South Visitor Centers, and the Family History Library. We finished our time in Temple Square with lunch at the Garden Restaurant on the top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building....at 10 stories high the views incredible. Welfare Square was a few miles away, but well worth a stop. There we toured the dairy plant, bakery, and the store house where the many...

Jun 8, 2017 - Salt Lake City

Thur., June 8th – We traveled up scenic US 89 to Salt Lake City where we checked into our campground at Mt. Shadows RV. After dinner at a nearby Chili’s, we drove downtown to visit the Mormon Tabernacle Conference Center for the free viewing of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Thursday rehearsal. The 360 voice choir, the massive, resounding pipe organ, and the very talented orchestra were most impressive. Tomorrow we will meet our missionary guides for a tour of Temple Square.

Jun 4, 2017 - Grams and kids begin

We began our journey on Friday night by all sleeping at Ben and Breezy's House. We awoke at 3:30 a.m. And Ben drove us to the airport. We had no lines and went directly to security. It was so fast that I did not have the boarding passes handed out. It was so fun to watch Carson (who had a window seat) for his first flight. In fact all four of these grandkids, were so amazed at flight. How fun it is to travel with them. We had a layover in Denver of 4 hours. That was tough because we were so tired from our early morning. No complaints from...

May 30, 2017 - Loading the Gear

After we picked up the Budget truck, we returned to Payson and loaded my gear. Scott did some last minute repairs. No matter how well we plan, we always have so many last minute details to fix. We drove to Riverton to pick up Brooke Austin, Carson and Ellie Theobald's gear and bikes. We have worked and worked and finding a way to transport the bikes and gear without damaging them. We have to be able to carry anything we use t pack on our bikes once we arrive at our destination. We came up with loading the bikes with their packs and roping...

Oct 7, 2016 - Trying to get to Yellowstone - Pt 2

Looking out the window in the morning we saw clear blue skies. Nice. Looked warmer, so a good chance that we’d get to Yellowstone. We left with high hopes. Up the mountains we went and down the temperatures dropped. About 20 miles into the drive we stopped and took a few photos and then made a u-turn and headed back. It was just too dangerous. Instead of visiting Yellowstone, we had another long driving day making it all the way to Salt Lake City in Utah. We had been 2 days behind in our itinerary but now have caught up again. Tomorrow we...

In the USA 2016

Sep 29, 2016 - 5 hours in Salt Lake City

Our return had 2 long layovers, one really miserable flight and NO lost luggage or delays! (Must be a record for us..) We flew from Marrakesh to Amsterdam on Transvania Airlines a subsidiary of KLM. It was the most like a sardine can I have experienced on a 4 hour international flight! All coach, all seats taken, all food/drinks for sale. John had his knees pressed into the seat back in front of him and complained about the knees from the guy behind him in his back. When we stood to disembark, the guy had a few inches on him, so I am quite...
