Oct 1, 2018 - Walking West Wendover

West Wendover is the last town on eastbound I-80 in Nevada. It has the casinos nearest Salt Lake City. That may explain why the parking lot featured Utah-licensed vehicles. Later I figured out that my motel - on the main drag but a mile from the action - was technically in Wendover, Utah. When I did my casino walk, crossing the state line, I visited four craps tables in three miles. I won at each visit. Added to my one win in Winnemuca, I had enough cash to pay for a couple day's worth of gas. The Bonneville Raceway was closed for a...

Sep 4, 2018 - I-80 East

Before heading East this morning, I traveled back west about 8 miles to see the California Trail Interpretive Center. However, the gates are closed and it is only open from Wednesday - Saturday from 9:30 - 4:30. But - they had brochures at a kiosk and now I know it is run by both the NPS and the BLM and the USFS! The California trail goes from Kansas City, Missouri to California and Oregon. Because of the gold rush, other trails were forged and the map I have shows many trails to California! I-80 follows a big part of the California Trail,...

Aug 27, 2018 - Temple Square and More

This was a full day. Started out morning by getting picked up by the trolley (yes they showed) I'd mentioned yesterday, at 9:30 at the Sheraton which is a block away (but these are long blocks). Good tour, informative, and they tried to liven it up w/ a couple of costumed guides who wore period pieces, told stories, and sang. After the tour, I stopped back at my hotel room briefly then basically went back to most of the places we saw on the tour. Of course, in this town, Temple Square is the big news. This is a square block (but remember...

Aug 26, 2018 - Best Laid Plans V 2.0

On Friday night I booked a SLC City tour for today. It seemed odd that I received a confirmation but was never asked for payment information. So yesterday morning I called and they confirmed they had my reservation and that I would pay when I was picked up at my hotel. The tour was supposed to start at 11 which is later than I prefer but didn't have a choice. I was up around 8 so I had 3 hours to kill. Had breakfast, checked up on a few things, and caught up on a bit of the news before heading outside to wait for the bus. When it didn't...

Aug 25, 2018 - Onward to SLC

Strictly a driving day. Left Grand Junction around 9. On I-70, terrain was similar to yesterday...dirt w/ some sagebrush. After 100 miles turned off onto US 6. Initially the same landscape then hit some more mountains although not as many ups and downs as yesterday. As I got closer to I-15 there was some green on the mountains but bush type plants not the tall deciduous trees like back east. As was the case in South Dakota, in Utah the speed limit on interstates is generally 80 mph. I'm still only up to 75 myself so I'm a slowpoke since of...

Jun 27, 2018 - Salt Lake City

Today was just a driving day to Salt Lake City. Tomorrow we pic Peter up at the airport. There was nothing much to the day. The main objective was top take Tucker to the Great Salt Lake. He had studied it in school and really wanted to float in the lake. The nearest place to access the lake was Antelope Island State Park, about 40 miles north of our campground. But we had time so we headed up that way. Did pass the world headquarters of Essential Oils and saw their fields of lavender. After slogging through construction in Salt Lake we made...

Sep 22, 2017 - Salt Lake City UT

After we got set up at the mediocre Salt Lake City KOA we headed downtown for a late lunch then to the grocery store. Always better to do it in that order as my impulse buying kicks into high gear if I’m hungry. Monday morning was set aside to make about a bazillion phone calls. I scheduled the house for service at the local Freightliner shop, booked the Jeep for some work on Thursday, spoke to our RV sales dude and then a cabinet guy in Red Bay about some future work. And Michele did her share of calls too, then about noon we moved to...

Sep 9, 2017 - Salt Lake City UT

Only 183 miles to Salt Lake City but once in the city environs the traffic is a nightmare and it's raining besides. The sites in the KOA are much smaller than we remember and it's very crowded. The Utah State Fair is right next door. Then miraculously the sun came out and the evening was lovely. However there was no way we were driving that truck in Salt Lake City traffic. So Uber it is. Worked like a champ. We went to Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Never thought we would find one Catholic Church in Salt Lake City but there were several....

The Summer of 2017

Aug 30, 2017 - Salty here

We have been in Salt Lake City since Sunday night and we leave for Moab tomorrow morning after a stop at a Verizon store to see if we can get Debi's phone fixed. This is the fixit stop. First thing we did Monday morning was to get the brakes fixed on the RV. They were really good to us at Auto Motion, got us in pretty quick and only charged us $163 to put in all new brake fluid and adjust all the brakes. Works good now. Salt Lake City is all about the Mormons. You can get a free shuttle into town but you have to listen to all the virtues of...

Jul 26, 2017 - Salt Lake City, Utah

Instead of taking I-84 to I-15 to Salt Lake City, we took two-lane Rt. 93 straight south out of Twin Falls. This route would take us through the little border town of Jackpot, Nevada, (which consisted of about 3 casinos, 3 discount liquor stores, and a campground), then to Wells, Nevada to pick up Interstate 80 straight east to Salt Lake City. The main reason I did it was so we would pass the Bonneville Salt Flats which are about 111 miles west of SLC. I’m not sure it was such a good idea, though because we got stuck in a road closure due...

Jul 3, 2017 - Salt Lake City

We toured around Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 2. Not much traffic which is a good time to just ride around and see the city. It seems to be a clean, well manicured town. We stopped at the State Capitol Building. It's the fanciest State Capitol we have seen so far. Temple Square was our next stop. It being Sunday, churchgoers were in abundance as were tourists. Impressive buildings and grounds. On July 3 we took a ride thru the Wasatch National Forest to see Cottonwood Canyon. There is a nice resort at the top. It seems this is a big ski...

Northwest Road Trip

Jun 13, 2017 - On Our Way

We got up at 3:00 a.m. and drove to Savannah Airport only to find out that our originating flight was delayed to the extent that we would be unable to make our connection in Chicago to Salt Lake City. United gave us another option of flying to LaGuardia, then to Denver, then to Salt Lake City. This would dramatically increase our airtime, but having no choice, we accepted. The agent waived our checked baggage fee because we were inconvenienced. Nice. One nice surprise - as we were descending into Newark we got to see the Freedom Tower. All...
