Oct 10, 2011 - Best Friends Day Two

Hey Everybody! We finally were able to upload our photos from yesterday and today. Yesterday we went on the latest tour of the sanctuary. There has been a lot of construction and there are nice new facilities for cats and puppies. Today Ron went to the Grand Canyon which he calls "the Big Ditch". Pam, Rebecca, and I went on an extended Dogtown tour. I am sad to say that we have not yet seen my hero, John Garcia. Then we volunteered with the cats and kittens. Rebecca said she will trust me to write about her. Hmmm....am I really that...

Sep 28, 2011 - Exhausted in Kanab, Utah

Wow! We are wondering how we use to get up at 5:30 AM and go to work 5 days a week! Our main purpose for visiting Kanab was to volunteer at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary; some of you may remember that we visited the sanctuary when we were in the area last May. For those of you who have “signed on” since last May, Best Friends is a society that works with humane groups throughout the United States to promote the concept of No More Homeless Pets. Also through rescue, legislation and public education, they are working to put an end to puppy...

Sep 27, 2011 - Kanab, UT

There are times when you stop at a place and things do not go smoothly. Well, the stop at Cameron was one of them. We had a problem with the car when we pulled in, the transmission was stuck in park, we ended up calling the Ford dealer in New Hampshire and troubleshooting the problem. We could not get the coach to level automatically, had Indians knocking on the door to pedal stuff, and the sewer was uphill. When I tried to store the right rear leveling jack, it did not want to go up. I had to crawl under the coach to force it up. We had a...

Sep 3, 2011 - Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Today we drove 179 miles from Nevada, a short way through Arizona and then up into Utah to a campground in Cedar City. It is amazing how the scenery changes as you change states. It almost is like the change in landscape is how the state borders were chosen. Driving through the rock cuts was amazing. As soon as we arrived at the campground, we traveled by car one and a half hours to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary down in Kanab, Utah which is near the Arizona border. Best Friends originated in the late 1970s with a group of friends who...

Jul 8, 2011 - Kanab via Bryce Canyon- Day 12

Travelling today to Kanab, near the Grand Canyon. Only made one stop today and that was at Bryce Canyon. We spent over three hours here. Some of the group went hiking, me and christopher walked around the rim of the canyon, before getting one of the shuttle buses to different points along the canyon to walk around (couldn't do too much walking, our trainers were still wet so were only wearing flip-flops. We stopped at the visitor centre to watch a film on the canyon (its not actually a canyon but a plateau). Kanab, the place which we are...

Apr 4, 2011 - Kanab, Utah

Heading Northwest. At this point, I am simply working my way back to the NW. While the journey has been interesting, it has also been a long trek. From Holbrook, I had two choices – either continue west and go through Las Vegas, or go north through Utah. Since I had already done the Las Vegas thing, I decided to head north and see some new country. So, I ended up here for the night. I did take a slight detour today and spent a couple hours at the Meteor Crater a little ways west of Holbrook. I know I have seen this from the air once or...

Dec 15, 2010 - Kanab

After leaving St George we head south and east towards the Grand Canyon. We took a very neat roadway through Colorado City, the Vermilion Cliffs and back into Utah to stay the night. We were on Highway 59 from St George. We "thought" we could get some really yummy powdered milk at a store in Colorado City, AZ. As we approached the town, we noticed all the houses are unfinished - it looked like a ghost town!! Very depressing..... Karen went into the store and everything stopped..... she had stepped back in time..... this was the town that...

Nov 17, 2010 - Travel to Kanab, UT

Wednesday, November 17 - For those of you that are concerned about us getting our laundry done, we completed that task today and even got the opportunity to hang it outside to dry. Please see our first picture as proof. Enough with the housekeeping chores, let's get into today's travels. Another beautiful day with a very short destination. We did a side trip to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park containing acres of colorful, sweeping dunes dotted with juniper and pinon pines. The sand takes on a pink coloring from the eroding Navajo...

Oct 28, 2010 - Kanab, UT (Day 3) - Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

(Ron Writing) Our mail still didn’t arrive but we found something quite interesting to do for our extra day here...hopefully it'll be here tomorrow! About 5 miles north of Kanab is the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. They give free tours of their very large animal shelter operation and we found it most interesting and educational. The sanctuary is located on almost 4,000 acres of very beautiful canyon land so space is not a problem and it allows them to care for all sorts of pets including horses, mules, donkeys, sheep, goats, pot belly...

Oct 27, 2010 - Kanab, UT (Day 2) - Waiting For Our Mail

(Ron Writing) We hoped to pick-up our mail today at the Kanab post office but it didn’t arrive. This afternoon Elena spent some time at the Kanab library while I caught up on some computer work. This evening we went out for dinner at Houston’s Trail’s End Restaurant. Our waitress was wearing a big six shooter on her hip so we did not complain about the service! The area surrounding Kanab has been used in the filming of over 100 western movies and TV series such as Gunsmoke. The town retains much of its western atmosphere. Kanab is known as...
