Apr 30, 2015 - Cameron Trading Post with Toadstools

Our RV park in AZ bordered the old Route 66, but for obvious reasons (see picture) we elected to head north into Utah on Highway #89. Our AZ travel guide insisted that a MUST stop on our way into Utah is the Cameron Trading Post (established in 1916 and still operated by the same family). The Trading Post is on the Navajo Indian Reservation and offers lodging, groceries, dining, and a bewildering array of artifacts and gifts. The latter range from high-end pottery, sculpture, and jewelry (all very $$$$), through wooden Indians, headdresses,...

Nov 14, 2014 - Southern Utah Photography Tour Part 2

Too many pictures. This is the second of 3 batches. It contains images from Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. I was watching one of the DVD's they sell to promote visits to this part of Utah and Arizona and it described Zion is the park that you have to look up when you visit and at Bryce you have to look down when you visit. I believe when you see the pictures you will agree. Both parks are spectacular in their own way. I think this is the best time of the year to visit both parks. There are no crowds and the weather has been...

2014 Cross Country 2

Nov 6, 2014 - Little Hollywood

We left Lake Mead NRA and headed north to Utah. On the way through Overton, where we got the Fit tire repaired, we stopped at the same place to have some valve stems replaced and valve stem extenders put on the rear tires of Winnie to make it easier to check the air pressure. We spent about an hour before we could hit the road again. To our surprise when we reached I-15, we found the north bound entrance ramp closed so we had to head south before we could go north, a minor detour. Our route north took us into the northwest conner of...

Oct 28, 2014 - Drive to Kanab

Moving day again; we seem to be just keeping ahead of the closings of the RV Parks. We left Cannonville and headed west on Highway we over the 7,600 foot elevation and through Red Canyon. Then we turned south on Highway 89 and it was a beautiful leisurely drive south to Mt. Carmel Junction. We topped up our fuel here and took a break at Subway for lunch. Then it was an easy run to Kanab and our home for the next three nights at Kanab RV Corral. They are closing this park the day we leave too. We went into town for dinner at the Fusion...

Oct 20, 2014 - Pet cemetary

We had never seen a pet cemetery so enjoyed this. We were driving down Kanab Canyon and came across this back in the boonies on a gravel road. It prob. went for 1/2 a mile. Had dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sure more we didn't see. There were windchimes on poles all over cemetery and when the wind blew them it was a little erie. We seen some beautiful tomstones.

Sep 29, 2014 - Kanab UT – Bureau of Land (BLM) Dispersed Camping

Spent the night just outside of Kanab, which is near the set for the TV series, Gunsmoke. The series ran from 1955 to 1975 and is said to be one of the longest running prime-time shows on television. There were 635 episodes and many of the outdoor scenes were shot on the set in Johnson Canyon near Kanab. It can still be viewed from the road but is not accessible due to its state of general disrepair.

Aug 17, 2014 - Pipe Springs National Monument

Pipe Spring lies on the Arizona Strip, a vast high desert between the Grand Canyon and the Vermilion Cliffs of northern Arizona. It is a harsh and uninhabitable region, but hidden geological forces bring life-sustaining water to a few places. Permeable sandstone aquifers to the north hold water from rain and snowmelt. It slowly percolates down to impermeable layers, then flows south to the base of the Vermilion Cliffs, where it is forced to the surface at places like Pipe Spring. Water is a powerful force in human affairs. For millennia...

Jul 18, 2014 - Kanab, UT

At days end, we arrive in Kanab, UT and the Quail Park Lodge. It was a full day with three stops seeing lots of cool sights. Our accommodations are a very cool retro 1960 motel. Check in was a breeze. The owner greeted us and got us settled into our room. It was 9:30p when we went out for supper! We ate at a local restaurant called Houston's Trails End. We told our waitress we were surprised they were open so late. She said so many Europeans visited Kanab and they traditionally ate supper late, that they adjusted their times to accommodate...

May 25, 2014 - Kanab, UT

Headed to Lake Powell on Hwy 89A. Everything went smoothly, great scenic views and newly paved roads until we encountered “the” road closure on 89A at Bitter Springs. Apparently we were support to that the 89T exit at The Gap to take us to Lake Powell. We had already gone about 150 miles (3 hours) and didn’t want to backtrack to get to Lake Powell. So we canceled the Wahweap RV resort reservations and continued to Kanab without reservations for the night. Our detour took us to a surprising pleasure as we discovered the Navajo Bridge…a...

May 1, 2014 - Moqui Cave & Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Yesterday we decided to get out a bit & check out just a couple of sights. The 5th-wheel repairs were completed. Poor Pete spent a lot of time under the trailer (laying in gravel), & I might say he was a little frustrated at times....but his language wasn't to bad. LOL ! He got the job done. Anyways here are a few photos from Moqui Cave & Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The Cave was a bit of a let down, not what we expected (very commercialized)& quite small. It is also a museum of sorts with some Indian artifacts & a variety of...
