Apr 30, 2017 - Dear Mr. God

Dear God, How ya doing? I hope you are well. I know what I'm about to tell you, you already know, but I'm hoping you will enjoy getting a thank you letter versus all the junk mail I'm guessing you receive. Let me begin with a simple thank you. My first journey of the year just concluded and I'm truly humbled and grateful. As you and I both know, life hasn't always been easy for me. In fact, if I were truly honest, my 20's and 30's were pretty dark. The struggle with depression, anger, divorce, ladder climbing and loneliness caused me to...

Apr 21, 2017 - Don't Look Back!

I turned 54 this week. 54. I don't care what anyone says, no one in their 20's or 30's ever says, "I can't wait until I'm 54." No one. Ever. I found myself in a deep doldrum on Tuesday (the day before my birthday). Absolutely nothing went right that day. Was it the age thing? I never really thought of myself as being vain. Alright, maybe a little (or I wouldn't be coloring my hair, no?). But I see people that can't live without surgical assistance, and I just don't get it. Age, as in life, happens. No doubt the brown spots showing up on my...

Apr 17, 2017 - Dust to Dust - My Time of Lent

Lent...an annual season of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday and lasting 40 weekdays (Sabbath not included) to Easter. I've practiced Lent on and off throughout the years. But this year, I wanted it to be different for me. I wanted to FEEL the purpose of Lent as I continue to search deeper into my faith and the learnings about Christ. What could I give up that would be meaningful? So many things to choose from...chocolate (please tell me no!), alcohol (kinda liking that nightly glass of port),...

Apr 15, 2017 - Best Friends - Dogtown

Exhilarating. Heartbreaking. Rewarding. Exhausting. On 3,000+ acres in the middle of nowhere, Utah, sits the most amazing animal sanctuary. Dogs. Cats. Rabbits. Horses. Birds. Yes, even some pigs have made their way to Best Friends. When they say, Save Them All...they truly mean "all". I learned of Best Friends in 2006 while watching tv one Friday night in Dallas. The name of the show was Dogtown. I became addicted. Dogtown is part of the Best Friends Animal Society, the largest no kill sanctuary in the nation (maybe the world). I have...

Nov 5, 2016 - Kanab

My brother Jack sent me a link to a Facebook page for Amazing Geologist. In it was a picture of one of the top ten geological sites in the country. It is a sandstone mountain side that is very striped and colorful. Jack said I should go see it. As it turns out, the place was only an hour and a half drive so we went to see it. It is about 30 miles east of Kanab Utah within the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. We found a BLM office in Kanab that is also a Visitor Center for the Grand Staircase, plus a geology museum. I told the...

Oct 15, 2016 - Kanab, Utah

We have done some last minute scrambling because the weather at the Grand Canyon is warmer than expected. We really wanted to see the North Rim but gave up because in Mid-October it is expected to be wintery. In fact, some of the facilities close down on October 16th. The road closes as soon as the first snow hits. Since the temps are running very moderate, we re-routed and changed our reservations to Kanab, UT, which is about 80 miles north of the North Rim and about 4,000 feet lower. This is close as we can get with last minute...

Jun 14, 2016 - Little Hollywood

Locals refer to Kanab as "Little Hollywood" due to its history as a filming location for mostly western movies and television series such as Stagecoach, The Lone Ranger, Death Valley Days. Gunsmoke, Daniel Boone, El Dorado, Planet of the Apes, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Sergeants 3 and over a hundred 'B-Rated' western movies....

Sep 4, 2015 - Approaching the Grand Canyon

We left Las Vegas yesterday and had a short drive to St George, UT. We had a couple of interesting minutes on a downhill with winds over 30 mph and gusting and moving the RV around. The RV resort in St George had a nice pool and we enjoyed time at the pool. After dinner we enjoyed our outside TV and watched the US Open tennis. Today we made the drive from St George to Kanab, UT to get in position to make our last leg to Marble Canyon for our raft trip. We will leave Kanab on Monday, drive to Page, AZ for any last minute supplies, and then...

Aug 1, 2015 - Kanab, UT for 6 Nights

Staying in Kanab, UT was not just a haphazard planning decision. I told you that the reason we ended up in Bluff, UT out first 3 nights out was because my sister Vicki used to go there. When she stopped going to Bluff for her fall vacation she started going to Kanab. Since she thought it was a god central location for the places Tom and I wanted to see we decided to spend 6 nights in an RV park in Kanab and journey from there, By the way, my sister stays in a vacation rental that has a copper roof – we located it and it was quite cute, if...

May 28, 2015 - Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

May 2, 2015 - Paria: Slot Canyon

We did our first slot canyon today. We walked the Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch Trail, which is slot most of the way. It's an interesting experience....very narrow with only a sliver of sunlight at the top. We got to a point where one had to descend down a sheer 10 foot embankment, which we decided was too challenging for our aged knees. So we turned back; but it was still fun and new experience.
