Sep 4, 2018 - Kanab

/// Tuesday - September 4, 2018 A Travel Day: With a very short trip to drive today we delayed our departure until noon. We treated ourselves to breakfast out this morning. I fell victim to a menu item declaring the best darned Cinnamon Bun ever. Well the darned thing must have weighed at least a pound. It covered a single dinner plate. I picked away at it for awhile before requesting a take out box. This bun may not have been the best ever but it was the biggest I have ever seen. We finally departed Panguitch at noon. Our route was very...

Apr 1, 2018 - Williams, AZ to Kanab, UT

This is about our drive from Williams, AZ to Kanab, UT on Friday, 3/30. Our plans were to drive back to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and make our way around to the north rim then out to Horseshoe Bend and on to Kanab. Those plans changed after we checked the route on google maps which indicated almost an hour delay due to the heavy traffic near the canyon. We backtracked to Flagstaff and took hwy 89 north. So glad we did!! It took us thru the western side of the Painted Dessert which was much more dynamic and colorful than what we saw...

Apr 1, 2018 - Fun day in Kanab & Peekaboo Canyon

Saturday in Kanab begins with me at the door of the Kanab Tour Company just before they open. Got us booked on an ATV tour to Peekaboo Canyon which we were hoping for! It was an awesome tour!! We had a great guide and a powerful ATV that would haul ass. There was one other couple with us on the 3.5hr tour. Our guide took us to a large sandy area with nice rolling hills and steep banks where we could let loose in the ATVs. It was a blast!! He took video of us we raced up hills and showed off our driving skills. After that we followed him...

Aug 2, 2017 - Zion again, Springdale, Last night in Kanab, UT

For our last day in the Kanab/Zion area, we took a drive back through Zion so we could check out the town of Springdale at the southern (or western) entrance to the park. On our way through the park today, we saw a herd of buffalo splashing in a pond by the road. I’ve never seen buffalo doing this, but I guess they are just like cows, they like a good swim when they can, too. (Whenever I see cows along the road in a pond or river, I call them “happy cows”, because that’s got to be much better than just standing around in a pasture all the...

Aug 1, 2017 - Best Friends & Kanab

Tuesday (I think, I lose track) Aug. 1 We took an easy day in Kanab to grocery shop, do laundry, check tires & oil, shave…you know all the basic stuff. Glenda went to “Honey’s Grocery Store”, it looked like THE local place to shop. It’s pretty nice when you can get a parking space right in front of the store instead of a quarter mile down the parking lot and when I walked in an idle checker actually greeted me. We DID however do one interesting thing…we made an appointment and got the free tour of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. They own a...

Jul 31, 2017 - Zion National Park

July 31st. We drove up to the east entrance to Zion, about 30 miles from Kanab and got by the gate for free again with our senior pass, saving another $30. That would have been $90 this week for the 3 Canyons/National Parks. The curvy road through the park is breathtaking and there are lots of pullouts to take pictures. You follow a series of switchbacks that take you down to the bottom of the canyon. There is a mile long tunnel which sometimes causes backups because if a large vehicle or bus needs to go through they stop the traffic so it...

Jul 30, 2017 - North Rim, Grand Canyon, Arizona

July 30, 2017 Today we drove from Kanab, Utah, to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, which is about 79 miles. There are a few places to stay closer to the Canyon, including some campgrounds without full hookups IN the park, but we didn’t want to drive the motorhome UP the mountain. It’s bad enough that gas out here in the mountains is about $2.79 a gallon most places (we did find $2.59 here in town), so driving the Jeep up there made a lot more sense. Plus we figured out today that the altitude difference between the North Rim and...

Jul 29, 2017 - Kanab, Utah

We had a short little day of driving down Rt. 89 from Bryce Canyon to Kanab, as I said, about 75 miles. We set up at the Kanab RV Corral Campground, right in the middle of town...well it's on the edge, but the town is small, so you're IN it. Cute little town with some good restaurants and the campground was just bought and taken over by a nice couple in February. They try very hard to make it nice and are doing a good job. It was the kind of town, and good accommodations, where I felt like I could stay awhile, so we did...4 nights gave us a...

Jul 7, 2017 - Hwy 12 West

Today's travel was along another Scenic Byway, Hwy 12 West. The route took us through parts of the Dixie National Forest, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Red Canyon and finally a side trip off of 12 and into Bryce Canyon National Park. Sadly, we're becoming a little road weary and after a more leisurely morning than the last two, we decided to skip Zion National Park. By leisurely I mean we were packed up and back on the road by 9:30 a.m. Today was yet another study in magnificent rock structures and canyons. Three...

Jun 20, 2017 - Fun in Kanab

I know we had planned to drive over to the North Rim today, but decided since we had been doing so much driving lately we should stick close to home. A lot of the pictures are of the surrounding rock formations and scenery. The temperature was supposed to have reached 104 today, but don't think it got that high, although it was very hot with a heat advisory. First stop was the Visitor's Center. As it turned out it was the Visitor's Center for the Bureau of Land Management. The ranger did have some information for us though so we gathered...

Jun 19, 2017 - Utah here we come!

This narrative is going to be a short one. Today was a day of travel and because we would be driving through some mountains and across a couple of bridges, I drove and Bob took all the pictures. Unfortunately, he missed some incredible shots because they were high or had sheer drops. We left Williams this morning about 8:30 MDT and drove both vehicles to the Pilot to gas up THOR. We drove both vehicles because we weren't sure we could get in there hooked up. After filling up and hooking up, we were on the way. Just outside of Flagstaff, we...

Apr 30, 2017 - Dear Mr. God

Dear God, How ya doing? I hope you are well. I know what I'm about to tell you, you already know, but I'm hoping you will enjoy getting a thank you letter versus all the junk mail I'm guessing you receive. Let me begin with a simple thank you. My first journey of the year just concluded and I'm truly humbled and grateful. As you and I both know, life hasn't always been easy for me. In fact, if I were truly honest, my 20's and 30's were pretty dark. The struggle with depression, anger, divorce, ladder climbing and loneliness caused me to...
