Jul 14, 2010 - Green River, UT

Well today we started our travels. We drove a mere 273 miles from Kanab, UT to Green River, UT. The drive was so beautiful with all the mountains, rocks and rock formations and different coloring. We stopped several times at lookouts for pictures. I never knew that UT was so beautiful, even though it was 100 degrees again. Just heard the weather for Green River, tomorrow's high is 102. Glad we are getting out of here. We changed our plans a bit and we are not heading home right now. We've decided to sweep by MN, WI and PA to visit family...

Jul 4, 2010 - Day 16: Denver - Green River, Utah

The "exchange" took place today; Mee Mee flew back home and Daddy Chris flew in to Denver. The hotel had an airport shuttle, so both Mom and Chris used this to get to and from the airport. Hope and I waited in anticipation for Chris' flight to arrive, and called a few times to check in on Mee Mee, hoping her travel was going smoothly. Chris flew in on time, and we were out on the road around 11:30. Traffic was very heavy driving out of Denver towards the mountains, and we lost over two hours of daylight sitting in traffic. Finally the...

Summer 2010

Jun 17, 2010 - Week one of the wild, wild, west.

What a whirlwind week... So many sights we have seen! Weather all week could not have been better; cool, sometimes frosty mornings, 50's and 60's during most days... constant sun, some wind. Sunday, left Las Vegas for the long journey to Kaibab Campground near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Trip was interesting, though... gorgeous road along the Virgin River. From Nevada, into Arizona, then Utah, then back into Arizona. Confusing time zones changing constantly. Set up camper in Jacob Lake (more like a puddle), nice campground, lots of...

Apr 28, 2010 - enough with the snow!

Today's drive took a lot longer than planned between slow downs for construction and weather. I hit snow flurries in several places in Idaho and Utah. One stretch was almost an hour long - through several construction sites. I was starting to think I really ought to have chains. Hopefully this is the end of the snow. Here in Green River and Moab it's a sunny 70 degrees. I looked up the weather forecasts for tomorrow's route and it looks like I'll just get wind and possible thunderstorms most of the way from here to Albuquerque. I had...

Mar 26, 2010 - Arches and Canyonland National Parks

Friday, March 26, day in Arches National Park and a short time in Canyonland National Park. Cloudy with low temperature of 43 and a high of 53. I had a real ham and cheese omelet this morning. It was great. Nancy went into a store in Green River to get some drinks for us, and heard the person behind the register talking about putting a blue stripe on cows. Nancy asked what that was all about, and it was explained to her that this is done to keep elk hunters from shooting them. They also explained that due to open ranges in Utah some farmers...

Mar 25, 2010 - On to Capitol Reef National Park

Thursday, March 25, a visit to Capitol Reef National Park and a night in Green River, Utah. Cloudy and woke up to 30 degrees at Bryce eventually the temperature got up to 56 in Green River. Today was another surprise. The 3 hour drive from Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef National Park on route 12 was simply amazing. We went from red rock giant pillars, to snowless desert conditions, to driving thru deep canyons, to riding on a two lane road with no shoulders and no guardrails on a ridge at 10,000 feet. Beat that if you can. After we left the...

Sep 29, 2009 - Green River, Utah

9/29 – 9/30 In two days we traveled 239 miles (SR530, SR44, SR191, US6, I-70). The first night we stopped at a Wal-Mart in Price, Utah. The drive included two passes, one at 8000 feet and the other at 9000 feet elevation. The second day we stopped at Green River State Park in Green River, Utah. Green river is known for its melons and we picked up a couple that were quite delicious. We also drove through part of Nine Mile Canyon which is about 20 miles from Green River. Along Nine Mile Canyon we made two stops to check out some excellent...

Sep 16, 2009 - Canyonlands

We left Moab and headed to the Canyonlands National Park which is divided into 3 sections; Needles, the Maze and Islands in the Sky. The entrance to Islands in the Sky is located just north of Arches. What strikes you most about Canyonlands is it’s often similar appearance to the Grand Canyon, the Badlands, Arches, Bryce, etc. Canyonlands seems to have a little bit of all of these parks blended into one location. The first stop we made after the vistor center was at Shafer Overlook. This was part of the master plan because later in the day...

Desert Storm 2009

Jul 3, 2009 - Day 2

All I can say about today…what a long day. We started somewhere in Nebraska at 5:00 a.m. (“we” is being used loosely here….one of us was awake and the other four were still camping). I’m pretty sure I could have bungeed the steering wheel straight last night and the RV could have drove itself through Nebraska……flat and straight. But I didn’t….so I got enjoy the last 300-miles of flat straight Nebraska first hand. I believe because we skipped the “World’s Largest Truck Stop”, fate has been against us ever needing gas when a truck stop is...

Nov 4, 2008 - Bricknell through Capitol Reef to Green River Utah 22 October 2008

Jeff Yesterday we drove the full length of the ‘very scenic’ Route 12; over 125 miles. We backtracked west along Route 24 to find good, reasonably priced lodgings, and today we will drive east along Route 24 which passes right through Capitol Reef National Park. First we must drive back past the great towering long blocks of weathered stone which would be very impressive anywhere else, with the scrub plains on our right. Capitol Reef got its first name from early pioneers because the white domes of Navajo Sandstone resemble the capitol dome...

Sep 9, 2008 - NEVADA AND UTAH

We have been on the road for the past two days. We wrote you about finishing California and the redwoods. The last was a day of rest in Nevada. We got an early start yesterday and drove over 350 miles. The weather heated up and we had to run our air conditioner constantly. But since Sunday, it has cooled off a bit, plus we have been climbing in elevation. Our Monday trip (yesterday) has very little to talk about. (I know you will be shocked to know I have little to say.) But driving across Nevada is boring and empty. We drove across it on...
