Sep 5, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip Back to Tuweep

We are feeling extremely lucky in our good fortune to have Marilyn and Denny arrive here in the same park, end up being our neighbors, be in the same type of RV (which is probably what initiated our conversations), and strike up a conversation that has resulted in a new friendship! They heard our stories and read about our plight on the website, or our attempt to get down to Tuweep. After they had driven down and experienced it two days ago, they magnanimously offered to drive us down there this morning! We were positively euphoric due to...

Sep 4, 2010 - Saturday, Glendale, UT (55 Miles)

The drive today took us through Red Rock Canyon. It’s the Labor Day holidays and the campground is nearly full. They have the most hysterical dog run ever seen. It’s only 4 or 5 feet wide. Obviously, nobody uses it.

Sep 4, 2010 - Utah - Travel Day

After a quick breakfast, we left Vegas for Utah. Before entering Utah, we went through a corner of Arizona. As we passed Mesquite, AZ, we went through Virgin River Canyon & Mountains. The highway was cut through a mountain range with winding roads and gorgeous scenery for 11 miles. On our way to Kanab, UT, our GPS took us to a road that continued on a sand road, with a sign that indicated it as a "primitive road". Maybe it would have been OK for a car, and maybe even a shortcut, but for these big rigs, it didn't look too promising. We...

Southwest Trip 2010

Sep 2, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip to . . . .

Okay – we are gonna win today! We knew it was a much shorter drive than yesterday’s experience, so we enjoyed sitting here having our morning java and a light breakfast before heading through Red Canyon, past Bryce National Park, through Tropic and to Cannonville before heading to Kodachrome Basin State Park and ultimately to see the last reason we had gotten the rental car – to see Grosvenor’s Arch; approximately 12 miles south of Cannonville on a dirt road. We did our usual, stopped by the Visitor’s Center to get any literature they...

Sep 1, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip to Tuweep & Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Up early and out of the door by 0830 this morning. We were both pretty excited about our journey today knowing we were going to be driving to Toroweep/Tuweep on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We were told this was a little known destination that would allow us to see more of the grandeur of this magnificent natural wonder. We had lunches packed, cooler full, gas in the tank, and we were ready for the day’s challenging drive and adventure. We had already been told it’s a dirt road the entire 61 mile drive to the rim. I had read there...

Aug 31, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip to Devil's Garden, Escalante Grand Staircase

As you have probably predicted, having a rental car also means we are going to get out and about every morning to get to the places we got the rental car to explore. And this morning was the first of the next two to go. We decided we would go to the furthest place first and that resulted in “Hole in the Rock” – this was a 225 round trip drive to reach the “hole”, an overlook to Lake Powell and supposedly quite spectacular to see. The building of this road by determined Mormons was one of the great epics in the colonization of the West....

Aug 30, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip to Kolob Canyon-Zion NP

We had a pretty busy day today to include some unscheduled sightseeing along the way. We have so many places we want to see in this area and have found many of them are inaccessible in our own vehicle, so we decided to rent a car for the week and get to some of these places we have either read about or have been recommended by fellow travelers and fellow RVers. We left Glendale just before 0900 heading north and then west to Cedar City using the same route we took to Cedar Breaks NM heading to Enterprise Car Rental. Got an excellent rate...

Aug 24, 2010 - Glendale, Side Trip to Cedar Breaks National Monument

Today we decided we would go to one of the smaller national monuments in the local area and thought we’d couple the adventure with a trip to Cedar City (almost due west of here) and a visit to WalMart to get some RV items we can’t find in regular grocery stores and then see the Cedar Breaks National Monument on the return trip, and take the Scenic Hwy 143 into Panguitch, have lunch and head home. The weather was fabulous as was the drive to Cedar City along Scenic Hwy 14. The Highway climbs up a very dramatic cliff-lined canyon to Cedar...

Aug 20, 2010 - Glendale, RV Park and Surroundings

We made the quick trip down to Glendale on Thursday and only had 113 miles to drive. We did have to go through a few thunder and lightening storms, but fortunately they were running west to east and we were heading south, so quickly away from them. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable trip down here and before we knew it - two hours later we were in our spot with some pretty views in front of us. We settled in and have driven around and gotten a few interesting pics of a gorgeous elk herd nearby. Definitely the male is the only one in the...

Jun 11, 2010 - Las Vegas, NV to Glendale, UT

Today was a travel day. We headed to Utah, and we have quite an itinerary while here. Before we left Las Vegas, we reviewed our plan on where to stay in Utah. As we wanted to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, we had initially planned to go to Jacob Lake, AZ. More research showed that the campground at Jacob Lake was a little too primitive for more than one night, so we decided on a KOA in Glendale, UT. That’s where our travel day turned into an adventure! The GPS planned out a route that would take us through Zion National Park. A...

May 12, 2010 - On the Road

We left Williams, AZ just after 8 am, wind was down, but temps in the mid 20's, can you believe that? Our plans were to drive to Bryce Canyon, but navigator Jean figured that it would be better to stop short and closer to Zion National Park, so we pulled into this very small RV Park (20 sites). Although a squeeze getting in, we have WIFI and are just 25 miles to Zion. The temps stayed quite cool until late afternoon, but warmed up to mid 50's. Along the way to Zion, we pulled off at a scenic overlook and got tempted by Navajo crafts. Jean...

Oct 12, 2009 - Glendale and Zion

Yesterday we drove around Zion National Park from Hurricane to the small community of Glendale, UT that lies between Zion and Bryce Canyon National Park. Our intention is to visit those two parks plus the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We are staying in a nice little RV park called Bauer’s Canyon RV Ranch. Today we got up early and, with Arnie on board, headed south for the 20-mile drive to the entrance to Zion. The drive into the park made an impression on Sue that follows. Driving into Zion Canyon it’s as though someone where making a...
