Jun 1, 2008 - A Beautiful Drive!

Sunday, June 1, 2008. Blanding, UT A Beautiful Drive! We said our goodbyes to the Swindlings this morning then drove from the Kaibab Forest along the south rim headed northeast up into Utah. The drive was probably the most beautiful one we have done thus far. We saw more of the Grand Canyon. We stopped a few times as we headed out of the park to take another look. Just gorgeous. Once we got a little further east, we drove onto the Navajo Reservation. The scenery was different but just beautiful. It was different than anything I had ever...

Apr 30, 2008 - Blanding, Utah

We arrived at Blanding, Utah, on Sunday, April 27. The trip up here was a brief 70 miles through the Navajo nation and into Utah. The terrain had subtle changes, a few more shrubs here, a few sticking-up rocks there, and a slight increase in temperature. Best of all, light breezes replaced the strong winds. Monday, we visited Bears Ears mountain, we couldn't believe there is snow up there! We went to Natural Arches National Park, which consists of a 7-mile drive with several opportunities to view the 3 rock formations, arches, from a...

Apr 19, 2008 - Another "Monumental" Day

Today we visited Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park on the border of Utah and AZ, as well as a "smaller" version of Momument Valley called Valley of the God's on BLM land south of Blanding UT where we are parked. Both of these unique sites are beyond anything we'd ever find in Wisconsin, and once again a beauty unmatched so far in our trip around the western U.S. These reddish monoliths were formed somewhere around 200 million years ago, give or take a couple of years. They are considered sacred to the Navajo people, as they were to the...

Oct 28, 2007 - Needles

As my time is running out I am having to accept I won't be able to see everything I want to. Because of this I was a bit ambivalent about whether I wanted to spend the whole day hiking in the Needles, another section of Canyonlands. This is some of the area that I had been looking down on from Island in the Sky. I had been told it would take that long to be able to get from the trailhead to the Needles themselves, or specifically an area called Chesler Park with the best views. Paul's enthusiasm for the hike was probably the thing that...
