Jul 8, 2018 - Visit to Kay's Mom

Kay & Steve were in Wichita Falls for doctor appointments for Kay's Mom, so we decided to drive down and meet them. It's an easy drive, turnpike most of the way, and it was a nice day, just a little windy. We arranged to meet at Cheddar's for dinner. We hadn't seen Kay's Mom since Christmas and her friend, Walter, even longer than that. So, it was a really nice re-union. We went back to Kay's Mom's place after dinner. She lives in a retirement community and it is really nice. We were so glad to get to visit with them.

Adventures for 2018

May 13, 2018 - Wichita Falls and the Prarie Dogs

2nd day of trip, heading to Wichita Falls. Great travel day and arrived at Lake Arrowhead State Park around 2:30. The campsite was very typical of other state parks we've stayed in; wooded, tall grass, very natural, and quiet mostly. This was another one-nighter, and we had the pleasure of a visit with Bobbie Balchus our SIL who lives in Wichita Falls. We had a great visit, catching up after 7 years. After Bobbie's visit, we took a walk to the lake. After finding a picnic table to take in the sunset, we noticed in the opposite direction...

Mar 8, 2018 - Wichita Falls, TX

Traveling I-35 to US 387 we arrived at Wichita Falls RV Park. Very nice park and one we would return to. This city like Waco is another place we have wanted to visit but weather has never cooperated. It's a city of 100,000+ residents and easy to get around in. We visited two lakes while here with one being a State Park with beautiful large RV sites for camping plus fishing piers. The State Park has an active oil pump jack amongst the campsites which I always love to see. It also is host to prairie dog town where you see hundreds of these...

Winter 2018

Sep 15, 2017 - Sept. 8 - 13 Wichita Falls, Tx

Kansas and Oklahoma are probably my least favorite places to drive. The roads are pretty good as well as plenty wide and flat. It's just so very boring. I did see two interesting things on the way to Wichita Falls, Tx (technically Iowa Park). The first was on a back road "short cut" between the hotel and the interstate. There was a huge bald eagle (I'm talking seated Labrador size) on a sand bar in a creek. Apparently he had caught a fish too big for even him to fly off with and so was having his brunch by the water. The second was at a...

Oct 19, 2016 - Arriving in Wichita Falls, Texas

We drove across New Mexico on I-40 and took US 287 down to Wichita Falls, Texas. We stayed at a nicely located in town. As we drove into Wichita Falls the sky began to darken and it was clear that a large thunderstorm was headed our way. Having gone through flight school decades ago in a small town, Mineral Wells, and having been through many of these storms you learned to not take them lightly. Sure enough just after we parked the skies opened up and dumped plenty of water. Prior to the storm it was so humid and after the storm passed...

We enjoyed breakfast at McD in Lebanon and ran into Melissa Dodd, on her way to a meeting in Columbia – she looked great! We had some items from Mom that we wanted to get out of LeeAnn’s house, so we took them to OUR house instead. It was good to check out the house – how lovely in the spring. Our dogwood was in full bloom, and...

Sep 27, 2015 - Wichita Falls, TX

On 9/23 we departed Wichita, KS, had a good uneventful 300+ mile run to Wichita Falls, TX. On the 24TH we met up with our friends Jean and Doug, our buds from Guam in the mid 60’s that we reconnected with last summer, as you may recall from last year’s journal. It was great that we could go back and see them again this year. We got caught up on the latest, went out to eat and had some great Wichita Falls local BBQ. Ever hear of smoked bologna? I didn’t think so. They have it here. After eating, we went to an aviation museum and then back...

WICHTA FALLS.TX. 8/31-9/4—Had a good trip over, no unusual problems- Found campground just fine- got set up—Noticed that the vinyl on the ceiling in bedroom is billowing out and coming down—but the coach is running so a bit of Duck Tape ( For those of you from last year- please note have been gone a month and this is the first use of either zip ties, bunge cords or Duct tape) and we will be fine until we get home. This was a GREAT four days! Visiting with Doug and Jean who we were stationed with in Guam back in 66-68—when we both were broke...

Apr 18, 2014 - Wichita Falls

We have driven almost the length of Texas going North and East and it is one large state. We went to see a ghost town, but it turned out more of a yuppie hangout than a ghost town. There were lots of old dilapidated houses that were left when the Mercury mine closed shortly after WW I but it looked that people were trying to make them habitable again and amongst them was this Espresso/Internet café. Go figure! We drove north across to Abilene TX and along the way all we saw on the road were tank trucks and pick up trucks. Plenty of oil...

May 21, 2013 - Palo Duro Canyon to Wichita Falls, TX

We awoke to a very dark sky this morning . We were headed out of Palo Duro Canyon at 8:00. Aren't you all (not ya'll) surprised at how early I've been getting up on this trip??!! We wanted to get packed up and on the road before it started raining. I had 2 messages on my cell and I just knew they were from Mom and Ingrid, and yes they were. They were both very concerned about us because of the tornadoes. I called them both back to assure then we were OK. Wichita Falls was SE of where we were and the sky looked much better in that direction...

Nov 26, 2012 - Headed west

We left The Colony, TX after lunch at Le Madeleine and started up 287 toward Amarillo,TX. Jim noticed a unique building from the highway and did a Uturn. We took a few minutes to check out the courthouse in Decatur. Built in 1895, it is octagonal and beautiful inside and out. We then checked out a few antique stores and headed for El Castile down Main St. Built by a cattle baron in 1883, it is still privately owned. Historic Decatur Staying at the Wichita Falls RV Park. Very nice!
