Apr 12, 2019 - Van Horn TX, Vanhorn RV Resort

On the morning of the 12th we departed Las Cruces NM heading to our next stop in Van Horn TX. Mostly all I-10, but we did take the route 375 loop around El Paso. We arrived in the afternoon at Van Horn RV Park. This too was going to be an over night stop, but once again the weather will keep us here through Saturday the 13th as there are big storms predicted east of here. As I type this post (4/13 1 pm central time) we are hearing about tornados in central and east TX and into LA. Very fortunate for us the winds in Benson delayed us a day,...

Feb 3, 2019 - Van Horn, TX Mountain View RV Park

Finally made it to Texas to Mountain View RV Park in Van Horn, TX. We have stayed here every year we have travelled to Texas. Another good stop over park, but this time we stayed three nights as we wanted to catch up on laundry and this journal plus visit a part of Texas we have not been in before. We took a day and drove about 65 miles north into northwest Texas to explore the Guadalupe Mountains. While traveling to this National Park, we passed Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, his space company's launch and landing site. These mountains were...

Winter2019

Feb 10, 2018 - Van Horn, TX

Took I-10 to Van Horn, TX where we stayed at Mountain View RV Park. In this small world, our friends from home, Tim & Barb Aldrich, pulled in that night right beside us. Neither of us knowing the other was traveling in Texas. Short visit with them as Dale had come down with the flu and was not feeling well. They left the next morning and we stayed another night to let Dale rest and hopefully feel better and of course to catch up on laundry.

Winter 2018

Dec 28, 2017 - Van Horn, TX

Another 300+ mile ride, and very cold. The temps are close to freezing, although we are hopefully not going to have another freezing night on our trip. Van Horn is a well-positioned RV park and seems to be a stopover for lots of campers. We came in at 4 o'clock to a park mostly empty, and then were amazed at the number of people coming off the road for the night. By 8 o'clock, the park was 3/4 full! It was not as cold last night, but was still below 40. We are used to this, but looking forward to some better temps and some sun!

May 11, 2017 - TX-Van Horn-Breakdown

We, we really can’t have a trip without some drama, we broke down again along I-10 about 40 miles east of Van Horn, if it weren’t for our guardian angel - a truck driver - who alerted us to the fact we had smoke coming from the left rear of our RV. Long story short, it turned out to be the outside bearing had disintegrate and the brake hub was almost off the axel. We did spend about 4 hours on the side of the interstate waiting for help to arrive. The wrecker/repair service out of Van Horne arrived, put new bearing on and followed us to...

After sitting still for an extra day in Del Rio it's time to make up some miles and put some distance under the tires. We departed the Broke Mill RV before 9:00 this morning and headed west on Highway 90 toward Van Horn to meet up with I-10. We'll stay the night at Desert Willow RV Park a Passport America park for 1/2 price, should be about $15 for FHU! We called ahead to make sure there was space for us and there was. By the way, we use several apps on our iPhone for searching campgrounds while on the road, our GOTO App is the "AllStays...

The Hotel El Capitan opened in 1930 in Van Horn to serve travelers at the crossroads of west Texas tourism. Financed by El Pasoan Charles Bassett, the Hotel El Capitan is one of several grand hotels in the west Texas tradition designed by architect Henry Charles Trost. Trost, an architectural draftsman in Ohio and a designer of ornamental metal in Chicago, arrived in El Paso in 1903, bringing his interest in the Mission Revival-style of the period with him. Mar 30, 2016 - Travel to Van Horn...going East

Today was a travel day. We have had enough of the constantly blowing high winds and going to head east towards Bluff Dale. Stopping Van Horn for the night and plan to travel on to Loraine, TX tomorrow and then to Bluff Dale. The winds were better most of the day because there were pushing us (tailwind) except when we were going south from Las Cruses, NM to El Paso then it was crosswind and about blowing us over it felt like. No travel problems today but 300 miles is enough for one day, so time to settle down for the evening and rest up for...

h road We left Terlingua around 11am on our way to Van Horn by way of Alpine, Marfa and Valentine. We arrived here without any problem around 3:30pm. The wind is blowing again but not as bad as a couple of days ago. Nice flat, straight and smooth road (74 miles) from Marfa to Van Horn. The pictures today are for Melodie and Craig's benefit. We all stayed here for a night 16-17 years ago. Looks like it has been restored and remodeled since that memorable night. This the hotel where Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean stayed in 1953...
