Apr 10, 2013 - Van Horn, Texas
The easiest way to get from Arizona to Florida is through Texas on I-10. The only place to stop on I-10 in Texas that is halfway from Benson to Kerrville is Van Horn. Other than wondering how it got its name, there is not much to do or see in town, so we stayed overnight and got up early the next morning to leave on our eastward trek to Kerrville. I dug up some road pictures to give you an idea.

Texas here we come! After getting our GPS's up and working we took off for Texas. It pays to go the same way twice as I did not remember the beautiful mountains coming into Las Cruces, NM. Could be that I was sleeping last time! The hum of the engine you know. It was much clearer this year as the wind was not blowing as much so that could be the other reason. In any event, the mountains were absolutely stunning against the sky. We again stopped at the wonderful Texas Visitor Center and picked up information on the Houston/Galveston area and...

Working our way westward, but it is mighty chilly. We are not sure this is what we signed up for. Temps going down to -5C tonight with a chance of FLURRIES in the morning. Low temperatures are expected for another couple of days. Hopefully it will be warmer by the time we reach Phoenix. Should have stayed in Brunswick.

Monday, September 17, 2012 We had a long day of driving today-392 miles to Van Horn, Texas. We left our campground at 7:39 under a sunny, clear blue sky and no clouds. We saw sunflowers and white, yellow, orange, and purple wildflowers, and a multitude of cactus species (prickly pear, ocotillo, pipe organ, and agave. There were mountains in the distance and either flat desert or rolling hills. We saw 11 moving trains and road construction with lane closures AND workers! We also saw several pecan groves and a cornfield. Horses and cattle...

When we were riding today i saw statues with frogs on them. It took us almost 8 hours to get to the Van Horn, checked in to our hotel and left to go eat out. We ate at Van Horn Steakhouse and the food was really good. I had steak with green beans. We went back to the hotel and rested. I watched the Teen Choice Awards. One direction won 3 awards including the most romantic song (What makes you Beautiful). My favorite song by them is More than This and i know every single word on that song. Justin Bieber performed his song Boyfriend. It was...

Jul 21, 2012 - Traveling
We traveled 500 miles today. Finished our trip through Az, then all through New Mexico and now we are in Van Horn, Tx. The landscape in Az, New Mexico look about the same. El Passo was the biggest city we have traveled through. We were glad it was Saturday. The border patrol asked us if we had any illegal aliens in our trailer. The first campground we went to had no one in it. It looked abandoned. Website was still up. Scary area so we drove to a Koa in Van Horn. Much better. We will be in Texas for more than another day. Over 855 miles...

Apr 1, 2012 - The Guadalupes
Sat 3/31/12 Guadalupe NP We hooked up and headed out this morning – destination, Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas. On the way we called our oldest grandson, Jack, and wished him a happy 11th birthday. Upon arriving we checked out the visitors’ center, watched the film, registered and set out for the Devil’s Hall Trail on the other side of the campground, a moderate-rated 4.2 mile hike. (We question the moderate rating on the upper section!) There are 80 miles of trails within the Park. It was about mid-80s but a gentle breeze...

Nothing much happened around here yesterday, so I thought I'd get caught up on some photos. This first one is the view you see of the Ft. Stockton, RV Park in Fort Stockton, TX. . . As you're driving into the park on the above road and you look off to the right, this is what you see. . . A little further down the road, you make a right turn and come to the office. As you...

Mar 10, 2012 - Fort Stockton to Van Horn, Still A Blowin’ and Big Problems
Van Horn TX. 34 Deg., overcast, NE wind @ 6 mph. Forecast = Mostly cloudy, high temp. 52 deg, a 20% chance of rain, East wind @ 10 to 15 mph. Just before we pulled out of the Fort Stockton RV park at 8:40 Thursday morning, the wind started to blow again. It wasn't blowing too hard, so I thought it would be OK. As we were heading to the next exit where there was a gas station, I thought the wind may be picking up a bit, but it still wasn't too bad. Well, by the time Jim had filled my tank with good old #2 diesel and we headed back out onto...

Feb 28, 2012 - Van Horn, Texas
Even though it is hill country one can still see for miles, we are at a fairly high elevation and the landscape is flat with higher hills placed here and there. The wind and weather has worn away the tops of these hills, to leave craggily outcropping of rock, some look like they have chimneys. Amazingly there is scrubby shrubs and cactus growing in the harsh, windy, dry land and these days because of the rain it is looking greener than usual. We stopped in Fort Stockton to seen Paisano Pete, he is supposed to the worlds largest roadrunner...
