Sep 27, 2017 - Clovis, NM to Sweetwater, TX to Stonewall, TX

Well we drove thru rain showers for 2 days but we made it safely to Stonewall, TX, in the Fredericksburg area & now we can enjoy this area for the next 2 weeks. Monday morning we left New Mexico & entered Texas less than 10 miles from the Elks Lodge in Clovis. We were in really flat country most of Monday but were interested in seeing all the agriculture out there - cotton, pinto beans (had never seen the long bean pods hanging on the relatively small plants - very interesting), corn, grain sorghum, & pecans. There were also lots of large...

Apr 24, 2015 - Palacios to Stonewall, TX

We left TBE about 8:30 this morning & arrived at our rv park in Stonewall about 2:00 this afternoon. It was a stormy day but thankfully the rain passed ahead of us (a couple of inches of rain in some places). We enjoyed watching the terrain change from the flat coastal plains to the Texas Hill Country. And the wildflowers are just spectacular now! We're staying in the same rv park we stayed in last April - Peach Country RV Park in Stonewall. The roads in the park are wide & the spaces are really long & pretty wide. And they don't charge as...

Apr 1, 2014 - Moving to the Hill Country

It didn't take us long to finish packing up this morning. We went over to the rec hall for coffee with our friends before taking off. It was 9:30 when we pulled out. We had good weather & an uneventful trip from Rockport to Stonewall. The oil drilling companies, trucks, rigs, etc. were interesting as we skirted the Eagle Ford Oil Shale area. The traffic wasn't too bad going thru San Antonio. The wildflowers are in bloom now. They've seeded along the roads & the Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, poppies, etc. are just beautiful. We pulled into...

Mar 20, 2014 - Cen-Tex Campout at Stonewall

THURSDAY This morning I went first to Discount Tires to have the air pressure checked. The service tech had trouble with the right rear inner tire because the stem extension had been torn, leaving only the metal part attached to the stem. He told me that, since they had installed those tires, they would reimburse me for the cost of a new extension. Then I headed to Stonewall to meet my Cen-Tex friends. We had several visitors: Don Rusher of Mineral Wells, sisters Anita Talbot and Jennifer Swan, and former members Jo Evans and Nancy Riley....

Mar 21, 2013 - Cen-Tex Campout at Stonewall

THURSDAY A little before 10:00 this morning I was heading for Stonewall for the Cen-Tex LoW campout. It was a tiring drive because of the strong side wind. Tonight we had a good potluck dinner with a wide variety of dishes. Everything always tastes so good. FRIDAY This morning a man came to the RV park to test the fire extinguishers for a couple who operate a food concession trailer. While he was there he checked the fire extinguishers of any of our club members who wanted. RV type extinguishers cannot be refilled but he gave pointers on...

Apr 23, 2012 - LBJ and Luckenbach!

Tues 4/17/12 Today we drove up to Fredericksburg and headed east to the State and National LBJ Park and Historic Site. I didn’t have any strong feelings about LBJ, pro or con. He suffered a lot of grief over the Vietnam War – some because we were there and some because he tied one hand of our military behind their backs. The State and NPS have done a great job preserving and interpreting the site. You can see his birth site (a rebuilt house closely resembling the one he was born in), his grandparent’s home, the Ranch and the “Texas White...

Mar 15, 2012 - Cen-Tex Campout at Stonewall

THURSDAY By ten o’clock this morning I was on the road. On the way to the campout I stopped in Dripping Springs at the Wagoner Tire Store to see whether they could put new valve stem extensions on my four rear tires. They didn’t have the right kind (where have I heard that before?) but Dan assured me that he would order a set and call me early next week after the order has arrived. Then I’ll have to drive back to Dripping Springs to have them installed. I certainly hope this will be the end of this saga! We had a good turnout this time,...

Mar 17, 2011 - Cen-Tex LoW Campout at Stonewall

THURSDAY This morning I was on my way to Stonewall by a quarter to 11:00 and was settled in my site by about 12:30. Val White, Nancy Riley, James Smith and I (all residents of Pecan Grove RV Park) walked across the highway to a little diner for lunch. Tonight we had a good potluck dinner and played table games afterward. FRIDAY This afternoon several of us were sitting on the club house porch when a Winter Texan, Annette Graham, came by with her macaw “Calypso” to visit with us. He is a beautiful bird. She told us that he is quite...

Apr 20, 2010 - This Land is My Land…Not Your Land.

We are in Stonewall, Texas. It is a small town and considered park of the Texas Hill Country. The town of Stonewall is where the ranch once owned by Lyndon Baines Johnson is located and is now a national park. It is where 40% of all the peaches in Texas are grown. We would love to taste those peaches however we are a month too early! We are surrounded by large tracts of undeveloped land – ranches, wineries and peach farms. Nearly all of the land in the area is privately owned. In fact, according to an article in the Texas Monthly magazine,...

Apr 14, 2010 - Our Workamping Assignment is Finished

Our last day of “work” at the RV park was on Tuesday and we’re now moved onto the Peach Country RV Park in Stonewall, Texas. Stonewall will be our base for a week as we visit the hill country area. There are a number of special events at the LBJ Ranch and the Nimitz museum in Fredericksburg this weekend that interest us. We may need to break out the raincoats since rain is expected through the weekend. Our four-week workamping assignment was a good one. We basically did landscape maintenance which included mowing using a riding mower (I...

Apr 9, 2010 - Wild Flowers & LBJ Ranch

Writing from Oakwood RV Resort, Fredericksburg, TX Up today and headed west towards Stonewall/Johnson City, TX. Outside of Fredericksburg we want to Wildseeds Farm. This was a great place. The wild flowers were in bloom and were unbelievable to see. As someone mentioned, we have Lady Bird Johnson to thank for the beautiful flowers. We spent a few hours here walking in the flower fields, checking out the beautiful potted flowers for sale and the 2 gift shops. Jim found a daylily he couldn't resist. We have several daylilies in our flower...

Mar 25, 2010 - Cen-Tex LoW Campout at Stonewall

DAY I - THURSDAY This was one of THOSE days. I was beginning to wonder whether I would make it to Stonewall for the Cen-Tex LoW Campout. Val and I had planned to leave around 2:00 to caravan to the campground. However, there were several "challenges" I had to meet before I could get on my way, which interfered with those plans. Val went on without me. First, I called Time Warner Cable to ask them to provide a longer cable. The technician who had installed the cable had made it exactly the length needed to reach from the pole to my motorhome...
