Dec 1, 2018 - Fun Holiday Events

We had a fun day attending several Christmas events for Padre Island. The main event we wanted to see was the Lighted Boat Parade. We tried to get a reservation at several of the restaurants to watch the colorful parade but they were all totally booked. We did manage to see some of the boats while crossing over the bridge but could not get any pictures of them. We also attended the Holiday Art Show. It had a variety of artworks from over 30 artists and artisans on display for art aficionados and holiday shoppers to enjoy and get a jump on...

Nov 16, 2018 - Birds & Alligators

We finally had a beautiful, sunny day to go out for more birding. The weather has been horrible for the last week. A huge cold front moved in with rain and freezing temperatures and strong winds too. It felt great to get out and do some more birding at the Padre Island Birding Center. We had hopes of seeing some of the Monarch butterflies migrating through too, but most of them had moved on to Mexico. We took advantage of the sun and walked down all the boardwalks to the bird blinds and spent hours visiting. We saw all the common birds for...

Oct 22, 2018 - Texas Birding

I am in bird heaven, this part of Texas is one of the best birding areas I have visited. Not only at the actual birding centers, but in our own yard. I already have three “NEW LIST” birds added to my birding list. The Buff-Bellied Hummingbird, the Great Kiskadee and the Blue Heron. I saw all three of these right from my camping site. We have gone to the birding centers too, but I am amazed at what you can see just from the RV Park. We have flocks of pelicans sitting on the docks daily and hundreds of gulls. We enjoy feeding the gulls daily,...

Sep 17, 2018 - South Padre Island

We had another travel day today. This time it was for about 200 miles from Mathis to South Padre Island. This is our first trip to this beautiful part of Texas, we are certainly impressed. We have been to almost all of Texas but this area, it was time to check it out. It is a very hot time of the year to be here, but it is also the BEST time to catch all the migrating birds. We have both air conditioners running full time. :-) We put out a few feeders and already have hummingbirds at our feeders. It looks like we are going to really enjoy...

Apr 2, 2018 - Spring Break at Padre Island

We went to South Padre Island for a couple of nights. We checked in to our campground early so we had a little time to explore. Of course I found a bird area to go to. The South Padre Nature and Bird Center is a wonderful place. They have a long boardwalk that goes through the marsh. So many cool birds. We saw alligators, fish and crabs too. The bird center has a five story tower that you can go up in. What a view from the top! We also went down to the beach to stick our feet in the Gulf of Mexico. It was pretty cold for a warm day, but...

We stopped to visit the sea turtle "hospital" today. Since 1973 they have been protected under the Endangered Species Act. They became threatened due to over harvesting these reptiles for meat, leather, eggs, shell and oil products which quickly drove their populations towards extinction. In 1977 Sea Turtle Inc was founded by Ila Loetscher in her home. She is known as "The Sea Turtle Lady of South Padre". The main objective is to rehabilitate injured sea turtles for return to the wild. Also they educate the public about the turtles and their...

Jan 23, 2018 - Sea Turtle Rescue

Today we went to the beach to watch release of Kemp ridley sea turtles into the water in the Gulf of Mexico. They are the smallest living sea turtles and are an endangered species. They nest from Tamaulipas Mexico to Galveston TX. Their preferred habitat is shallow costal areas and bays and favorite food is blue crabs. With the cold weather Texas has been having, the water temperature has dropped rapidly which puts the turtles in a "cold stun". When the water temperature drops below 50 degrees the sea turtle becomes hypothermic. If they are...
