Another long day of driving. We were planning on stopping for the night at a Passport American campground but when we got there it seemed like the entire town had shut down including our campground. Sort of looked like a ghost town. So we parked in a vacant lot that looked like at one point it was a gas station. We were going to walk to this one and only restaurant that seemed to be open but did not feel safe walking around after dark in this unknown area, so we cooked up some hotdogs and pork in beans. Jun 26, 2011 - OTRA - TX - Sierra Blanca

We're trying to leave a bit earlier than usual on our travel days so we don't end up setting up house in the heat. Today we left at 9:45 for the 132-mile trip to Sierra Blanca, Texas and, because of the weather down here, still ended up setting up in the very oppressive heat. Oh, what I wouldn't give for a good old-fashioned rainy, cloudy day. Passed many, many feed lots with many, many steers/cows around El Paso. Other than that, not too much of anything to make mention of. We do seem to be driving out of rock mountains/cactus country and...

Dec 19, 2010 - OTRA - TX - Sierra Blanca

12/19/10 Since it was only a short distance from Monahans to Sierra Blanca, we didn’t get underway ‘til 11:15. We climbed a LOT of mountains today and fought a bit of a headwind all the way so we didn’t get as far on our tank of diesel as normal. Let me tell you, I was a nervous wreck watching that needle go closer and closer to “E” and we’re out in the middle of nowhere. In fact, the wonderful little “bong, bong” of the low fuel warning signal even came on…but by then we were only about 3 miles from a very welcomed gas station in Plateau...
