Hello again! Sorry for not updating in a while. We weren't really traveling so there wasn't much to put! I'll recap what we did in the last month briefly as I'm not too sure it's all that interesting. - Zac celebrated his 33rd birthday. Ann and I made a cake and we had taco bell and played games, it was fun. On a different day, Aaron and Zac played games together to celebrate it. Zac's birthday was September 24th. - I went to a divorce party that was gothic fairytale themed, with lots of penis shaped food. I contributed to that by baking...Jump to full entry
Sep 17, 2020 - Texas, Baby!
We made it home! We're back in Seguin. The first day we got home it was very late and we went straight to Ann's house. She had fireworks and a four course meal and fancy cakes and presents.... just kidding. She had something better prepared, a hug and her excited noises, which are amazing. We slept in the parking lot outside her apartments that night. I woke up at about 8:30 the next morning because it was hot and humid and I couldn't sleep anymore. I went straight up to her apartment and chilled in the A/C. Zac came up later and we hung...Jump to full entry
Jul 23, 2020 - Van's Basically Done
A lot more of progress has been done since we finished the roof! The roof was difficult as we had originally intended to cut boards that were longer than the width of the van in order to bend them to arc with the existing arc of the van. However, that didn't work at all and because of that the wood we had bought was no longer whole. The boards we bought were already exactly the width of the roof without the extra inches we had wanted, so we just used them as is and the roof is a bit of patchwork. But it's covered! We drilled into the metal...Jump to full entry
Jul 12, 2020 - A lot of progress
It's been a while since the last post because we have been working non-stop on the van and going to bed late each night. A lot has happened since we put in the floor, and it's all possible because Zac got the Mitsubishi sold. We got $6,500 for it, which has been going into building out the van. The couple that bought it are going to use it to tow behind an RV, funny enough. An overview of what's happened with the van since selling the car: we did the bed, the walls, the solar, sanded and painted rust, and put some furniture in the van. More...Jump to full entry
Jun 30, 2020 - Putting down plywood floor
Over the past two days or so Zac and I have been working on the flooring in the van. In summary, we put down a layer of thick plastic for waterproofing directly on the metal floor, and then screwed wood down on top of that. Getting there involved a bit of difficulty though, but overall went pretty well. Firstly we bought the plastic stuff, which basically felt like an extra-thick contractor trash bag. It was difficult to work with it because there was just so much of it, I couldn't get it to stay still as I moved around on top of it trying...Jump to full entry
Jun 25, 2020 - Installing the roof vent
Yesterday we installed out roof fan. Zac was very nervous about cutting a hole in the roof (with good reason). First he measured the 14" by 14" square we would need to cut, and outlined it with sharpie. Then he drilled holes in the corners. However, by the time he got to the second corner to drill a hole and we quickly realized the hole was too close to the light on the roof. At this point Zac was discouraged as we had a hole where we didn't need one, and he felt he had messed up the easiest part. After a bit of a motivation break he moved...Jump to full entry
Jun 23, 2020 - We have a van!
We finally have a van! It is a 2005 GMC Savana with a new engine and new rear end, extended. We got it for $3,500 which is awesome. We bought it from a guy in San Antonio who used it for a work van to repair pools. Fortunately no chemicals have ever been stored in it, just equipment. It's not a tall van, but it is nice and long and drives really easily. The only problem is there aren't any windows--that makes backing up difficult. We plan on fixing that eventually! Our first attempt to buy a van didn't go nearly as smoothly. We found a...Jump to full entry
May 26, 2020 - May Update
As of May Zac is no longer working for Rush and the two of us are working online. Zac used his retirement to pay off his car and the title finally came in! It's been posted online, hopefully we can get it sold soon. As soon as the car is sold we'll be buying a van. Then we have to renovate it, put the RV in storage, sell our truck, and be on our way. Everything is coming together! The country is re-opening too, despite our fears that everything would be closed due to COVID. We'll see if it stays that way. If anything we'll be boondocking...Jump to full entry
Mar 1, 2015 - Leaving the Beach
Both John and I have said that this winter was the best one we have had at the beach in Port Aransas and we believe it is because of the good friends we have. Pat was able to spend a couple of months with us. We got to know Otis and Twenty lots better this year, and my friend Jeannie also spent a couple of months there. We did a lot of fun things, ate a lot of great meals at lots of different kinds of restaurants, and spent a lot of time just laughing and enjoying good company. The hard part is having to say goodbye. -- Today, our four...Jump to full entry
Dec 25, 2014 - Merry Christmas!
It just doesn't seem possible that it is that time of year once again. Time to wish all of our friends and family a Merry Christmas! Another month has passed. Another year has come and gone. A new year is about to begin. Where the heck does time go??? We are constantly surprised at the amount of time that has passed in what seems to be a short period of time. -- One of the good things about having this journal is our ability to go back and review days gone by. We can look up where we were three Christmases ago or where we spent Memorial Day...Jump to full entry
Oct 17, 2014 - Son Fix
We enjoyed our down time at the Buckhorn Resort in Kerrville very much. The weather was perfect. We were able to get many of our maintenance items taken care of, and we rested and regrouped. Even the kitties. -- This morning, we were back on the road early, heading towards San Antonio. John has been having an on-going argument with himself for the past several days. Should we take the back roads to Seguin? Should we take the 1604, which goes around the outside edge of San Antonio, or should we just bite the bullet and go through downtown...Jump to full entry
Oct 13, 2013 - Sweltering
We left the Texas Hill Country on Friday morning for Seguin, where my son Zac lives. It has been 7 months since we left the beach and I saw Zac, and I am in need of my son fix. -- The weather had changed dramatically during the night and on Friday morning, it was like walking into a sauna when you stepped outside. There is a weather system coming up from Mexico that is bringing hot and humid weather to Texas. The weather guessers are predicting a possibility of rain with humid conditions for the next week. -- It was a short travel day but...Jump to full entry
