Dec 21, 2017 - Odessa, TX

We drove hard today traveling 813 miles. We hit Dallas / Fort Worth at the wrong time (evening rush hour) and it took us almost two hours to pass through the area. The Super 8 in Odessa, TX was the nicest one we have stayed at. We rested well and enjoyed a hearty breakfast the next morning.

2017 Travels

Feb 5, 2016 - Odessa Texas

Our trip started out with a chilly morning of 35 degrees, gets warm during the day but still gets cold at night. Now I see why the cowboys wore long john’s all the time. Our little journey today will have us stopping at the National WASP Museum in Stillwater TX. The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was a paramilitary aviation organization. The WASP's predecessors, the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) and the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) organized separately in September 1942. They were the pioneering...

Dec 10, 2015 - Postcard 13

December 10-12, 2015 Road Trip Journal: Postcard 13 We sadly said goodbye to all our babies and started on our way back home to California. The traffic out of Denton through Fort Worth was horrendous. It was stop and go for almost 2 hours; much like traffic in LA/OC. We decided to change our plans on the way home and take a more direct route. Between the road trip to TX and a month in Texas dealing with the rental, we just wanted to get home. We took route 20 from Ft. Worth to Pecos and then caught the Interstate 10. It was a nice flat...

Mar 20, 2015 - Odessa, TX

After a week's stay we headed out of Junction on Hwy 83 to Hwy 87 to Hwy 158 to I-20 to FM 1936 where we stayed at Mesquite Oasis Rv Park. This park like many in the area is an oil workers park. Very few sites for overnighters. In visiting North Dakota's booming oil areas, we thought Midland/Odessa would be similar. We were wrong. There are oil jacks and drilling platforms absolutely everywhere here. We learned that the oil from this area Permian Basin, started in 1928, makes up 18% of all crude production in the US and 51% of all Texas...

Big Bend Excitement

Oct 17, 2012 - Delayed with Engine Trouble

Leaving Arlington on Monday we started having overheating issues with the RV. Not to far from Odessa our engine light said STOP so we did. We found a CAT dealer not to far far away and limped to their doorstep. We stayed for two days while tried to find the reason. So close, but so far.... Finally, late Wednesday afternoon, after they called for assistance, it was found to be a "known" software issue. No fun! It's fixed and we are on our way again.

Jul 24, 2011 - On the road at last

I never thought it would be a relief to leave paradise. After one year of planning, cleaning, purging clothes, furniture, personal mementos, storing things that we just couldn't let go of and more cleaning, cleaning, cleaning... we walked out of the house with me still mopping the floor till the last step. Don't get me wrong, I love our home and I will miss it dearly but the daily grind of keeping it cleaned and in order is the part from which I will be happy to take a long break! First stop, Odessa, Texas, the long way around... direct...

They are almost full for the night and it is understandable. They have very nice facilities and it is very quiet.

West Coast Trip 2011

Feb 28, 2011 - Odessa

Yesterday we arrived in Abilene, Texas with the temperature registering 90 degrees and our a/c system working full bore. This morning we awoke with the temperature at 38 degrees and we had the heat on full bore. Our plan for today was to drive to Odessa, Texas where we planned to stay at the Midessa Oil Patch RV Park. As we drove up to the campground our first reaction was "No Way Jose", but after entering we found the park to be an adequately maintained ex-KOA park with a reasonable rate, so we stayed. West Texas is basically a desert with...

Red Bay Factory Trip

Oct 29, 2010 - San Antonio - Junction - Odessa

As you all know, we was very happy to get back home, San Antonio. The park at Fort Sam Houston is so nice and clean it is a pleasure to sit back and relax. After pulling in on the 27th of September our first appointment was on the 28th with Patti, our very good friend and hairdresser. She got us looking normal again. Not much pictures on this update because we do not do any sightseeing and we did not want to bore our friends by constantly pointing a camera at them. Some of the things we enjoyed --- ---wine on the patio with Gloria and...

Aug 30, 2010 - Oil Fields, Windmills and Rattlesnakes

Hi everyone! Sorry it has been so long since I updated...I have been busy sightseeing and traveling. We left the Dallas area and headed west, going across Texas to El Paso before turning north. We spent the night at the Midessa Oil Field Campground, located between Odessa and Midland, Texas. We did not get invited to the Bush Ranch....hmmm, very inhospitable of him don't you think since we have traveled so far from Virginia? Mom is enjoying herself, she is like a little kid just in awe of all the rugged beauty of this great country. Our...

Apr 25, 2010 - Spending Time with Bro In The Premian Basin

We have spent a wonderful week in west Texas with our host Patricia's brother Byron. Our tour of Odessa and Midland was basically driving around with Byron and sightseeing. On Thursday while driving around Midland we came upon the George H.W. Bush home where they raised young Bush's in the 1950's. Out of that home and hometown two presidents and a governor of Florida spent part of their childhoods. Odessa has numerous painted jack rabbits placed around town similar to the painted bears in Cherokee, NC.(entry #33). The University of Texas...
