Feb 7, 2013 - Galveston - WOW!

A quick stop at a Rockport bakery for breakfast (I know - but I'm pretty sure it was a FAT-FREE fritter!) and then on to the ferry for our trip off the island. Donna loves this place even more now as the fritters were yummy and the ferry is free!!! Our trip to Galveston zigzagged on numerous little roads through farmland and tiny towns. The thing about these small roads is that they are nicely paved with a speed limit of 70 MPH but no one is on them so we cruise along, stopping for photos whenever we want - it is stress-free driving....

Feb 6, 2013 - somethings goin' on???

Yikes what happened to our weather!!! We had heard rain and thunder in the night but this morning was as gray and gloomy as home on the worst day! Every so often a torrent of rain would fall and the wind would howl then it would brighten slightly raising our hopes, only to unleash another deluge of rain. So much for our 350 days of sunshine!!! Donna snuggled up with her book and was as happy as could be. Eventually she started to organize our photos on the laptop and it froze. We turned it off but instead of fixing itself nothing happened...

Feb 4, 2013 - beachfront - Baja style

Moving day again. After Donna did a beach run and Wayne uploaded our blog we packed up at Mustang Island State Park and moved 20 miles to the Padre Island National park. Bird Island Basin campground costs $10 for a year entry pass and the camping is free. We are literally 15 feet from the waters edge on the lagoon side of Padre island so it has much calmer waters and the sun beaming down - can't beat that! After a quick trip to the little townsite nearby we actually sat and read part of the afternoon away for the first time this trip - life...

Feb 3, 2013 - Paddlin' on the Gulf

Today was exploring day – checked out the National Park where they have 2 campsites – one $8.00/night and the other $5.00/night. Guess where we are thinking of moving to tomorrow?? On the road to Port Aransas there is a development of cute places with new ones being built. We parked in front of a trio of unfinished units and began to give them the walk through like we were Mike Holmes inspecting the construction. We were just finishing up when a guy drives up in a golf cart. I wonder if it was our custom kayak rack that tipped him off that...

Feb 2, 2013 - Down to the sea again

Our early morning run today was a success – no bugs, no waving, no men with white coats chasing Donna down the trail!!! Our morning departures haven’t been all that early these days – we seem to have trouble getting on the road much before 11am. And it’s NOT because Donna is sleeping. NO IT’S NOT!!! We reluctantly pulled out of San Antonio knowing that we only saw about ¼ of what they have to offer but the pull to the ocean was too strong so off we headed. Taking our usual back roads we traveled through some neat little towns “(little”...

Mar 22, 2010 - Mustang Island State Park

Well today we made the move to Mustang Island!!!! We had alot of fun just getting here, getting to see the coast on the way down thru Rockport, Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi and Padre Island. We are in site #16 in the State Park. You can hear the waves coming in all the time. It was late when we got here, so we went for a walk on the beach and some supper and went to bed. Today we went to Lake Corpus Christi State Park and looked around. We came back to the beach and had our lunch and fed the seagulls most of it, but it was nice and...

Oct 31, 2009 - of Butterflies and Gulls

One migrates and the other doesn’t - Saturday, October 31 The red tide went out during the night so we decided to stay another day and enjoy the beach. The dead fish are mostly gone, and the ones that aren’t are gradually being devoured by the gulls. Whatever killed the fish doesn’t seem to bother the gulls, who actually fight over them. Of course gulls don’t need an excuse to fight. They are naturally scrappy birds, unlike the placid pelicans who seem to get along with each other quite well. Pelicans actually seem to enjoy each other’s...

Oct 30, 2009 - Texas road-kill

Thanks to local drivers we finally get to see a Crested Caracara - Friday, October 30 The Crested Caracara is the National Bird of Mexico. Audubon calls it ‘a bird of prey’ but ‘king of the scavengers’ describes it just as well. The caracara may look like a raptor but it’s been known to drive off a whole flock of turkey vultures to steal their road kill. Today the meal being contested was a dead javelina, mowed down by a driver too drunk or inept to miss it. As we approached it on the highway, a circle of black vultures surrounded it and...

Feb 12, 2008 - Padre Island, Mustang Island 2/2006

Today was overcast and had some scattered showers. We decided it wouldn't be the best day for the Botanical Gardens so we went over to the Islands. Padre Island and Mustang Island protect the coastline of Texas. They are beautiful in their vast open space. I expected the usual tourist mecca like the east coast but was pleasantly surprised to find grass covered dunes and miles of nature. The campgrounds are small and do not offer full hookups but what a great place for a quiet get-a-way on the beach. Maybe the next time we pass this way. We...

Well, we left Schertz Texas today. It was fun but time to move on... We landed at Mustang Island State Park. Right outide of Corpus Christi. We had to go over a ferry to get to where we were going. When you step out the RV door you can hear the water, the breeze smells so nice. We wet straight to the water to check it out. It is in walking distance. Chec out the photos from...
