Feb 6, 2018 - Corpsman Up!
After making up for lost time by pushing through Arizona, New Mexico and brief stops in Texas in Van Horn and Del Rio, we stopped for 6 nights in McAllen, Texas. McAllen is in southwestern Texas and is the twentieth most populous city in Texas. It is situated along the Rio Grande River across from the Mexican city of Reynosa and approximately 70 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. The guiding reason to visit this area was to visit the young man we call our godson, Ryan. Ryan was a Navy Corpsman who was attached to the Marine Corps and after...Jump to full entry
Feb 2, 2016 - The start of another year of travel.
It is time to start our "adventures" for 2016. We are currently in McAllen, TX parked at Vicki's daughters home. We will probably remain here until it warms to the north. There are activities around south Texas to entertain us until we hit the road again. This weekend we will spend on South Padre Island where a kite festival is taking place. We will try to send a blog covering this and other events that keep us out of mischief while in the Rio Grand Valley. Before we we leave in the Spring we are planning a trip to Tiawan for ten days,...Jump to full entry
Mar 27, 2015 - The end of March
Hello to all, The weather is improving, spring is coming. I know that you have all had another rough winter and ours hasn't been to great either. We have had the third wettest winter on record for the Rio Grande Valley. Yuck. But now the temperature is going up and the sun is peeking through the clouds a bit more often. First I need to share some very sad news. The first picture was taken last February of our dear friends Kathy and Doug Barraclough from Canada. It was taken on their 48th Wedding anniversary. This year we again celebrated...Jump to full entry
Mar 5, 2015 - Second half of February
Hello All, As you can see from one of the pictures, Valentines Day is very BIG down here. The picture was taken at our local grocery store but there are stands on many of the street corners with large displays of bagged baskets that contain candy and stuffed animals. All of the Holidays are celebrated very big compared to up north. We hosted an afternoon "thing" at our site on Valentines Day. Everyone brought some snaks and as you can see we had a little bit of food. We have some great neighbors here on 3rd street and we will miss these...Jump to full entry
Feb 13, 2015 - February is a busy month
Hi Everyone, I promised an update with some before and after pictures, so here they are. The lift pictures are of the wheelchair lift that we got when we bought the mobile home. I found a buyer for it and they came and took it away. However, that left a big hole in the railing where it had been. So, I rebuilt the railing, stained it to match, and then had concrete poured to form a walkway around the porch. We are now having stone put in along the walkway to match the from stone we have in the front. The shed pictures are the way it looked...Jump to full entry
Feb 2, 2015 - We're still here!
Hello Everyone!!! Yes, we are still here. I am sorry that it has been so long sing the last update to this journal. I sometimes feel that this is like showing home movies to your friends, and I don't want to bore you all with our adventures. But, due to several complaints that reminded me that I have not put out an update since the end of December, I promise to try to put out something a little more often. The pictures show a little New Years eve get together that we held at our new place. The weather was too cold to sit outside, so we used...Jump to full entry
Dec 28, 2014 - Christmas in Texas
Hello everyone, Well I am finally getting caught up. This issue is to share a few items from our first Christmas in Texas. It started out on Christmas eve by finding out that what we thought was an orange tree was actually a Candy Cane Tree. It bloomed on the morning of Christmas Eve and is still in full blossom. I picked one and tried it and they are very tasty. So, we now have our lemon tree and our candy cane tree blooming for when all of the rest of our friends arrive from up north. At 6 PM on Christmas eve, the park coordinates the...Jump to full entry
Dec 25, 2014 - Catching up
Hi everyone, Sorry I haven't put out an update for a while. We have been very busy as you will see in the next couple of posts. This one is to talk about our updated golf cart. We ordered a rear seat package for it and I spent the better part of a day taking the cart apart and adding the rear seat. I even got a helping hand from our good neighbor Pete. Then we made another small purchase. We purchased a mobile home here in the park. You will see it has a beautiful kitchen and living room, a bath and a half, a huge bedroom with a king size...Jump to full entry
Dec 21, 2014 - December 21, 2014 – McAllen and San Juan, Texas
December 21, 2014 – McAllen and San Juan, Texas Today, I decided to try to see all the Sebastian sculptures in McAllen. This proved to be easier said than done. There were no addresses – only names of buildings, which if you lived here and knew where the Chamber of Commerce, etc. was would be okay. However, I had to look up the addresses, and some of them proved to be wrong. In addition, the descriptions of what was supposed to be each place either didn’t match or there was no sculpture there. Take my word for it, the Official Guide to the...Jump to full entry
Dec 14, 2014 - A Busy Day
Hello All, I know that this is an extra posting for this trip journal, but to today was a busy day and I just wanted to share some highlights with you. We started out today with a visit to Buffalo Wild Wings with a group of about another 20+ folks from Wisconsin and our resort to watch the Packers game. Unfortunately, the packers lost but not because of our cheering at the restaurant. It was a really great time. We got back just in time to get Linda down to the Christmas Cookie cook off. There were 10 ladies who put their best Christmas...Jump to full entry
Dec 14, 2014 - To McAllen, TX for CHRISTmas
Friday, December 05, 2014 – Saturday, December 06, 2014 - Navarre, Florida Linda works at a thrift shop on Friday mornings from 8:30 to noon. This particular morning they needed help so when Linda called and asked me if I would help, I said yes. I hung clothes and then put them in the proper place on the rack. I got an education on how a thrift shop runs. We have played cards, made caramel popcorn, a mince meat pie, and roast with potatoes and carrots. We have had a great time with Linda and her beautiful family here in upper...Jump to full entry
Dec 13, 2014 - Christmas is comming...
Hello all, On Thursday, the Kitchen band with our favorite member (Linda) performed for the Bentsen Grove Christmas party. A good time was had by all. Yesterday and today I decorated our shed and steps and even our new golf cart. There are a lot of decorations in the park and now our site is respectable. The weather has been beautiful, mid 70s and partly cloudy. (sorry to rub it in!) Linda has been cooking cookies today for a cookie contest tomorrow. We'll let you know how it turns out. There are only a few of us here in the RV area right...Jump to full entry
