Feb 16, 2012 - Cen-Tex Campout at Lexington

THURSDAY This morning I stopped at Discount Tire Store to have them check my tires and install the valve stem extensions that I had bought at Pep Boys. To my chagrin, the extensions would not work! The store manager recommended that I go to Crestview RV in Buda to get their recommended extensions. I arrived at Lexington in time to have lunch at El Matador Mexican Grill with Annette, Ronnie and Larry. The food and service were good. After lunch Ronnie drove us to his property just outside Lexington. He has sold all but a few acres of his...

THURSDAY This morning I was slower than usual leaving home. It was about 11:30 when I finally got my act together. I decided to feed Daisy before leaving town even though I probably had enough gasoline for the round trip. On the way, I stopped at the Dairy Queen in Elgin for lunch. We had our potluck dinner tonight. It so happened that our visitor, Bill Smith, was the only one present who had a birthday in February so he got to blow out the candle and hear our..., er..., off-key rendition of 'Happy Birthday'. He joined our chapter, so I...

This week end we had a tour of Alcoa’s Rockdale operations, which was arranged by Joe Barrett. I always enjoy this tour. After the tour, the tour guide took us to a German immigrant’s 20th-century house made entirely of petrified wood. I wish we could have seen the interior! Saturday night we had dinner at Granny’s Restaurant.

This was another good campout. We have four new members – always a good thing. On Saturday we took a tour of the Alcoa operations in Rockdale where we saw some new things that we didn’t see last July. The drag line was operating in a different area. Such huge equipment is fascinating. The tires on some of the equipment are about six feet in diameter!

This was a very nice campout at Lexington. The highlight of the trip for me was our guided tour of the Alcoa mining operations at nearby Rockdale. It is an open-pit mine but the company is very diligent about restoring the land after they have finished mining a section. After an introductory video in a conference room – complete with coffee and donuts – we rode a bus out to the mine. I was very impressed and learned a great deal about the processes. Dump trucks look like toys in comparison to the huge drag line. Saturday morning three...
