This morning we headed out before daylight in order to reach the Wildlife Refuge by 7:30 to go on a birding tour, and it was great! There were 10 of us on the tour in addition to the driver and guide (both volunteers). Several were much more knowledgeable than we are, and having twelve sets of eyes instead of two helps, also. The guide and several others had scopes which made it possible to get "close ups" of many of the birds. We added over two dozen to our trip list today. Jan 4, 2017 - Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Late Monday evening, we decided to come south because we remembered such good birding at Laguna Atascosa--one of the best wildlife refuges we've ever found for bird watching. We drove here Tuesday morning. Had quite a time finding the place and then finding a campsite: neither address on the literature or websites was on the Garmin GPS system, but it at least got us close, and road signs did the rest. We are staying at Adolph Thomae County Park, which is adjacent to the refuge, but about 20 miles from the refuge entrance. There is a gate...
