May 3, 2017 - Finished Orientation...

Still no photos, although I will note that my dream board from 1-1-17 included a couple of cottage photos. I wasn't at all sure that I wanted to get back into single home ownership but I knew I wanted the cottage experience. So far on this trip we've had a 100+ year old cottage in Lake Charles and now another in Houston. Could be I'll get this out of my system without a real estate contract. Our B&B owner woke up today no more organized and no less manic....but her ride came at 10:30 (30 minutes early so I suspect they've known one another...

May 3, 2017 - Getting AirB&B Oriented

Too exhausted last night to write and still no pictures. I really can't say enough good things about the previous night in Lake Charles, lovely space to stay, great food, quiet neighborhood. We planned Lake Charles initially so we could be in Houston before noon, giving us 24 hours with the B&B owner. I had hesitated to say this before now....but we have driven over 1,000 without seeing a single accident. And so we've had very few traffic delays. Where to start.... The slowest part of the entire trip was I-10 onto 59 South. Houston folks...

Road Trip 2017

Apr 19, 2017 - Houston to Auckland, NZ

Departed Houston for Auckland 2.5 hours late with Air New Zealand bringing in snacks and beverages to lessen the wait. Even so, it was already 2:45 a.m EDT. when we took off. We had upgraded to Row 47 A/B, bulkhead, exit row seats which allowed me to fully extend and elevate my legs and it was next to lavs. The seats were terribly uncomfortable and sleeping was difficult. The all male, older, with one exception, flight attendants worked efficiently to provide a mediocre dinner and limited beverages and then completely disappeared until a...

Jan 14, 2017 - The Heights in Houston TX - Ritual Restaurant

We had to go into Houston on some business and we celebrated Reggi’s birthday at the Ritual Restaurant. Reggi saw a review that praised its cuisine, great steaks and the staff. We have the Butcher Block special, a skirt steak wrapped up and cooked in beef fat with a Garlic Onion sauce. Outstanding. Our server, Casey presented Reggi with a her birthday dessert, it was outstanding.

Dec 29, 2016 - Overnight in Houston

So our stay in Calgary was uneventful. We used the new international departures area which recently opened in Calgary. There is no Air Canada Lounge in the new section. Generally this is not a big deal however I had two free guest passes to the lounge that I had been saving all year to use on this trip. I get the guest passes in Feb or March I generally use them when I am delayed or early to the airport. In the last year I was delayed 3 times by more than an hour and could have used them. As we were planning on going to Panama before they...

Nov 22, 2016 - Houston, TX

Back in Houston for Thanksgiving! We have gone from the freezing temps of Amarillo to the humid tropic Houston weather, which is a little hard to get used to! Billy and Emily are all settled into their apartment and have done a nice job of decorating and arranging. Janet and Emily are spending Wednesday cooking and preparing ahead for Thanksgiving. Janet made an apple pie in the camper, which we will cook at Billy and Emily's, brining a turkey, and they are both working on side dishes. On Thanksgiving we got up early and headed to the...

Jul 23, 2016 - Houston TX

We merged onto I-10 right at 10:00 Wednesday morning, pointed the house to the west and set the cruise control. We zipped through Mobile and Gulfport and then onto I-12 near Slidell to avoid going near New Orleans. Then it was on through Hammond and Baton Rouge, across the Mississippi River for the eleventy-seventh time and finally landed in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana west of Baton Rouge for the night after 4 states, 1 fuel stop, 1 lunch stop and just shy of 6 hours of pretty easy travel under our belts. Thursday’s 4+ hour trek to Houston...

Second Half of 2016

Jun 20, 2016 - NASA

After my usual walk and breakfast we got ready and hopped into the car to the main reason I wanted to come to Houston. Johnson Space Center. This is where they develop the spacecraft, train the astronauts and control all manned space missions. It is continually manned now as low as we have personnel on the International Space Station (ISS). The visitors center has been turned over to a non-profit organization to run, but they still have a few tours that run over to the main complex. We arrived at 10 am just as they were opening, and got in...

Jun 19, 2016 - Father's day with family

Spending father's day with family is very special. I consider Casey my son, as well as the rest of Reggi's children. Last night Casey & Sabrina took me to the Houston Dynamo's game and they gave each person a Star Wars Soccer scarf with Darth Vader on it. Casey is a die hard Star Wars fan and in particular a Darth Vader fan. He did not get one because he took some of his employees from work to the game and his ticket did not cover the scarf. So like a good dad, I rubbed the fact I got one and he didn't, well today I gave it to him for...

Jun 19, 2016 - San Jacinto battlefield and USS Texas

Today we are off to a couple more sites of history. We started with stopping at San Jacinto, which was the battle ground for Texas Independence. After the battle of the Alamo on March 6, and the massacre of 350 Texan prisoners of war in Goliad on March 27, the Texan army had been retreating before the Mexican army. But on April 12 the Texan army stopped retreating and in the afternoon, attacked with 900 men against the Mexican army of 1300 men. All during the attack the Texan army yelled "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad". At the...

Jun 18, 2016 - Houston Dynamo Game

For father's day Casey & Sabrina took Mike to the Houston Dynamo's soccer game. Many of you might not know Mike was a soccer referee for many years. He did games from under six year old all the way up to American Soccer League games in the Pontiac Superdome in Detroit. So it was a very special night for them to take me to the game.
