May 31, 2017 - Last week in the Galveston/Houston

We are leaving the Galveston/Houston area today. We are heading to Central Texas Hill Country. Home of Great BBQ!. We have really enjoyed being able to see my sister and her family. Last week we treated everyone to Tookie's Seafood. 49 Cent Raw Oysters on the half shell and $3.00 Drinks. Margaritas, Makers, Beer. It was a great evening. Malin joined us making it even more special. I put on my Texas look for this occasion. Dancing lessons were fun. Dale and I do not have any rhythm. Enough said. We were suppose to go out into Galveston Bay...

May 18, 2017 - Last Day at the BnB

Thursday was our last day at the BnB. Even though I had declared that I didn't want to spend the entire day getting the cottage ready for the owner's return... That's pretty much what we did. I have truly enjoyed my time here.... seeing friends and catching up, observing life inside the loop, visiting favorite spots and restaurants, experiencing the BnB lifestyle, experiencing life in a 100 year old cottage and enjoying some extraordinarily comfortable Houston weather! But it is time to travel on.... The owner returned in the same manic...

Road Trip 2017

May 17, 2017 - May 16 & 17th Worlds apart but the same

Yesterday, Tuesday I met Bridgitt at Pasha's for lunch in Rice Village. Great atmosphere and wonderful food. I honestly believe that was the best lamb I've ever had, perfectly cooked and so tender that a knife was unnecessary. Bridgitt and I met I'm thinking in 2000 or 2001 at a downtown Episcopal Church, Christ Church Cathedral? I'm not sure. I know it was downtown and driving in from Kingwood was incredibly brave and that this church ordained women. Whatever. We were participating in a study of the Gospel of Mary. I was so overwhelmed....

Road Trip 2017

May 15, 2017 - May 15th is nearly done

Three more days and on the fourth wake up we head out towards Dallas, ultimate destination for this next leg is Iowa Park, Tx. to visit Ron's sister and her husband. Today was our last busy day for the BnB with 3 check outs and one check in. That's a lot of laundry. Only 1 more check out and 2 more check ins all on Wed. and our work here is done. It's been fun. But as I might of mentioned before I'm no longer tempted to re-invest my retirement funds in a 100+ year old cottage. I can just tell, they are way more fun to visit than to own. Our...

Road Trip 2017

May 14, 2017 - Houston 2nd Sat. and Sunday

I'm thinking if I were to title my life the most appropriate caption at least for this last decade would be, "Well, that didn't go as planned." Still and despite that, I'm having a good time. Yesterday was great with lunch at Niko Nikos with two of my Magdalene sisters. I had no idea that we had all three been widowed within six years or that we'd all lost our last remaining parent within the last year. Lots to talk about, lots to process. On Niko Nikos, it was awesome. I'd always wanted to try it but once we settled into "our" restaurants...

Road Trip 2017

May 12, 2017 - Friday in Houston/Kingwood

Seriously this journal is not turning out as I had planned. I thought I'd be posting glamorous shots of all of the places I'm visiting and sights I'm seeing. I think I wrote yesterday (haven't gone back to check) about the Homeless Tent Village a half mile or so from here. If I didn't mention it's about that same distance to a multi story, huge brick Baptist Church. I'm not afraid of the homeless. They are in my mind people. But it hurts my heart to see anyone living under such harsh conditions and to think about the circumstances of life...

Road Trip 2017

May 11, 2017 - May 10th and 11th

Well, I was thinking I might have made a mistake beginning this journal as there doesn't seem to be that much to say. Today changed that. Yesterday after we finished with the BnB duties we struck out in search of McD's ice tea. On the way there we passed the homeless tent city under the 527 spur. I would have taken pictures for you but is felt like a violation of their privacy. Later headed west we passed what I can only describe as a homeless townhouse, two sets of mattresses and box springs plus couch and end chairs under 59/69 beside the...

Road Trip 2017

May 9, 2017 - At "home"

Today was a stay at "home" day. Easy BnB stuff with just one checkin...old hat now. I'm so far ahead that I washed the dogs' bedding today. I'm starting to make plans with my Houston friends.I'll share that this is a little hard since this will be the first time I've seen them since Whaley died and it's taken me until now to feel comfortable enough with my commitments to the BnB to feel like I could make plans with other people. This trip is very fluid and we don't have any reservations or sitting jobs beyond June 10th (or 27th if we push...

Road Trip 2017

May 8, 2017 - Galveston!

Today is the first day since April 29th that we were not either traveling or working. So what did we do? We got in the car for an hour drive to Galveston on one of what I believe to be our ugliest interstates. Can you even read the name Galveston without hearing Glen Campbell's voice? 45 south seems pretty much unchanged. I swear I recognize some of the road rashes on some of these barrels. Just kidding, kinda. As for Galveston..... it seems to me that maybe following hurricane Ike, some residential properties came back as commercial?...

Road Trip 2017

May 7, 2017 - May 6th and 7th

It dawned on me today as we sat on the porch exchanging pleasantries with departing guests that now I understand. All these years I've stayed at B&B's and envied the relaxed lifestyle of the owners sipping coffee or tea or wine on their verandas, I did not realize that they are not so much relaxed as they are waiting. They are waiting for their guests to leave so they can strip their rooms, they are waiting for the washer and dryer to signal they've finished their cycles, they're waiting and watching the street for the next check-ins that...

Road Trip 2017

May 5, 2017 - Cinco de Mayo

Ok...this whole BnB thing is way more time and labor intensive than I'd ever dreamed. And I'm doing really light time here. I've kinda gotten into a rhythm and so today after the early chores we were able to single out time to visit Shipley's and have kolaches. The owner had warned us not to go East on Richmond as that's where the homeless people hang out. I explained that I am not afraid of the homeless or as I like to call them, "people". And looking at the map, Shipley's is .3 miles from the house. So....if it is not safe for me to walk...

Road Trip 2017

May 4, 2017 - Settling In

I am exhausted. As is so often the case, I think it's not so much what I've actually done but what I've worried about getting done along with adjusting to new activities. I'm caught up on the laundry. The owner handles it by having two sets for every room and not worrying if one is dirty. I'm handling it by having everything clean asap, all the time. The upside of doing it my way is not having to stand over baskets of linens and try to guess in which room they belong. It also means I can just take a basket into the room and the maids fold...
