Dec 18, 2014 - December 18, 2014 – Hidalgo, Los Ebanos and Mission, Texas

December 18, 2014 – Hidalgo, Los Ebanos and Mission, Texas I sat up last night and watched White Christmas. I never stop enjoying the music and dancing. Now, I just have to watch A Christmas Story. Since it is broadcast for 24 straight hours beginning on Christmas Eve, I think I’ll be able to work that in. This morning after lollygagging around for a while, I took off for Hidalgo to see the Old Hidalgo Pump House Museum and World Birding Center. This pump house is credited with almost singlehandedly turning the Rio Grande Valley into the...

Mar 6, 2013 - Santa Ana NWR.

Mar 2, 2013 - On the road again.

Dec 16, 2012 - Hidalgo Festival of Lights

Today we went to church at the St. Mark's Methodist Church in McAllen. The kids really surprised us when they did the Children's Talk and they just went right on up and then followed them out to Sunday School. The problem is the kids from church were practicing for the Christmas Play so the helpers had to find things to keep them occupied. It all went okay though. After church we came home to change clothes and had some sandwiches for lunch. Then we headed toward McAllen to visit a few of the local thrift shops. Danica and I spent some time...

Feb 20, 2012 - History Along The Rio Grande

From Tropic Winds Resort – Harlingen, TX Our adventures of today lead us once again to the banks of the Rio Grande River. First stop along the river was the city of Hidalgo to visit the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse and a historical area of the city known as Hidalgo Viejo. The city of Hidalgo is the oldest city in Hidalgo County and was the original county seat. In 1848 Scottish born merchant John Young founded a town site straddling two 1749 Spanish land grants as a trading post and ferry landing opposite Reynosa, Mexico. Originally the town was...

Dec 26, 2011 - Festival of Lights in Hidalgo, Texas

We absolutely love visiting the city of Hidalgo during December. It is their Festival of Lights and it is a really BIG deal. The city has over three million lights and 900 displays along with a small carnival and live entertainment. City personnel from Hildalgo actually design and erect the displays and more displays are added each year. This year the theme for the Festival is "A Tropical Christmas" Today we journeyed to Hidalgo via our park bus along with 40 other Winter Ranch and Trophy Gardens residents. Once there, we bought tickets...

Apr 19, 2011 - Mission - Hidalgo Beeline Trolley Tour

Our list is getting smaller as we continue to check off the things we wanted to see while here in “the valley”. We had to wait to do this tour until today because it’s only offered the third Tuesday of the month, and encompass not only a tour of the Hidalgo Pumphouse, but also of Hidalgo’s historic district “Hidalgo Viejo” on the Hidalgo Beeline Trolley. With the record breaking heat for this time of year, we opted to get there to see if we could get on the 11:00 a.m. tour rather than wait for the tour we had reserved to go on at 1:00...

Dec 13, 2010 - Hidalgo Christmas Lights

We took another bus tour offered by Texas Trails today. This time we were off to see the Christmas lights in Hidalgo. It is one of the highlights of the Christmas season here in the Rio Grand Valley. We have come over to see the lights at least once for every year we've been in the valley. Every year new additions are made to the extraveganza!

Jan 17, 2009 - Mexican Flea Market, Killer Bee, Ferries And Old Buldings

Well, it’s the weekend and we are off on some adventures. First off on Saturday mornings here at the park they do a pancake/sausage gravy & biscuit breakfast. We both can eat, be full, all for about $6.00 total. Good deal. Then we decided to check out a flea market only about 2 miles from us. Mainly I go to pick up some of the great produce. When we mentioned to some friends we were going they’d say “Oh, that’s the Mexican flea market.” Well, once we got there we understood what they were talking about. We were the only “gringos” in the...
