Mar 13, 2019 - Trip To Boca Chica

Today we took a ride off the end of the earth to Boca Chica, the new launch site for the SpaceX Heavy rockets. This is about as far South as you can go in Texas. It's very isolated, out in the middle of nowhere, but there are actually about 20 houses in Boca Chica Village. It's isolated enough for each house to have cisterns for rainwater or trucked in water. From here, we headed over towards South Padre Island. Unfortunately this is the beginning of Spring Break. Traffic was almost totally stopped on the only bridge out to the island. So...

Mar 4, 2019 - Two Months Gone Already

Two of our three months here have slipped by already. There hasn't been a whole lot to write about. We've spent most of the time doing repairs and upgrades to the motorhome and, when the weather cooperates, enjoying the warmer weather. This has not been what one would consider a "tropical" winter. For example, Saturday's temp was 93, yesterday was 87, and today it's 37. We've had mostly cloudy, windy days. But it still beats Jersey Winter. So let's see, so far we've replaced a water filter that froze before we left home, replaced the...

Winter2018-2019

Jan 22, 2019 - Time For An Update

We're here for 3 weeks already. Time seems to be flying by. The weather has been good overall. Temperatures are swinging between the high 40's and the low 80's. We seem to be catching wave after wave of fronts coming across the country. Today we've got winds that must be in the 40-50 mph hour range. The RV is a rockin'. All is going good here. I thought I'd put up a couple pictures of the primitive campground we're in. Other than going to stores for supplies or out to eat, we really haven't been out exploring anywhere. That's about it from...

Winter2018-2019

Jan 4, 2019 - Sun!

Finally, the clouds cleared out, the rain stopped, the wind even calmed down. That cleared the way for the sun to come out and we're finally getting the temperatures in the mid-70's that we came here for. Blue sky and warm was a nice change. We got some sitting outside time in, finally broke out the grill and lawn chairs. Marley even got to nap in the grass, oblivious to the jack rabbits running around. Life is good.

Dec 31, 2018 - Harlingen

Yesterday we rolled into Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen, TX, our home for the next couple months. It's about 400 miles down from Houston so we did it over two days. We pulled in and settled into our site with no difficulties. We're not too sure what we accomplished by traveling all this way as it's just as cool here as it is at home, if not cooler. We've been on the road 18 days and have driven on 12 of them. We traveled 2308 miles getting here. To close out the year, we've put 7638 miles on the RV and setup our "campsites" 49 times. All...

Winter2018-2019

Apr 2, 2018 - Harlingen, TX (part 2)

The second half of our Winter Texans stay in the Rio Grande Valley had us visiting Progreso, Mexico. We park on the US side of the International Bridge over the Rio Grande and walk it to Progreso. Up until now Ralph’s gout issues negated the walk across the bridge. The gout medicine, Colchicine was $5.50 per pill after our insurance coverage. Our Canadian neighbors, Peter and Janet, load up on their medication needs south of the boarder every year and convinced us to at least check on the price of Colchicine. As soon as one steps off the...

Feb 15, 2018 - Harlingen, TX (Tropic Winds RV)

We arrived here at Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen, TX on January 2nd. This will be our Rio Grande Valley "Winter Texan" home base for the next three months. Last year was our first extended stay here and we couldn’t think of any reason not to do it again. Ralph’s continuing battles with the gout and arthritis makes it more difficult to move every two to three weeks. Besides, we enjoy being part of the community and this park has more activities than we could possibly participate in. Pat, once again is taking Spanish classes. In-fact...

The pond was loaded with the areas famous Whistling Ducks and a few Swans. Next was the South Padre Island Birding Center. The nature center offers more than 3,300 linear feet of boardwalk, five bird blinds, and a five story tower with spectacular views of the Laguna Madre, beaches and dunes of South...

Feb 1, 2017 - Harlingen, TX #1

December 31, 2016 thru February 1, 2017 Our extended stay in the Rio Grande valley started on New Year’s Eve with a visit to Lazy Palms Ranch in Edinburg, TX for one week. Edinburg is a city of 82,000 located about 20 miles north of the Mexican border. The city is also the home of University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This will be our northern most stop in the Valley. From this point the Rio Grande meanders south-east to the Brownsville, TX area. We arrived at Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen, TX on January 7, 2017, aptly named since its...

Jan 15, 2016 - Rio Grande Valley-- first stop is Fun N Sun RV resort

On January 6th we left Livingston, which is 60 miles NW of Houston for warmer climes. 400 miles south to the Rio Grande Valley: Harlington, TX. Temperatures are still a bit cool at night, but much nicer during the daytime... highs around 70. On the 15th we went on a scouting trip to South Padre Island... nice day, but we really didn't bring the beach gear so we will have to make a return trip.
