Mar 9, 2014 - Falcon State Park & Casa Blanca State Park - Mar 2014

We purchased a season state park pass this year. It has been a definite money saver. So our next two stops were both state parks. Falcon State Park sits on a very large body of water out in the boonies. The nearest little town is Falcon Heights. We enjoyed a couple of hikes in this park. A nice quiet week. Casa Blanca State Park is in Laredo. In fact, a new large sub-division borders one side of the park. Our mapping programs that we use as our GPS were all confused as to where the entrance to the park was located. We did not do much here....

Jan 31, 2014 - Falcon State Park

Willis and I were ready for a change of scenery. I wanted a way to celebrate my hubby's birthday in a memorable way. So...time for a fun camping trip with friends! Willis, Blayde, and I enjoyed four fun days camping at Falcon Lake with our friends Bruce, Jack, Jan, Jane, Mary Sue and Steve. Although the weather was freezing cold we enjoyed hikes bundled up in our coats, birthday cake, yummy snacks, visits around the campfire, and time playing Mexican Train. Thank you to Bruce and Mary Sue for opening the door to their RV (the biggest one on...

Apr 12, 2011 - Mission - Falcon State Park and Roma

Today we thought we’d head off in a totally different direction than our past explorations have taken us. So, instead, we headed due west to enjoy a picnic lunch at Falcon State Park and then stop by the small town of Roma-Los Saenz on the way home. We were really lucky today with the weather, temps in the high 50s earlier in the morning with the humidity in the low 40 percentile and breezes at 6 mph – for this area; sheer heaven! We put the top back on the Jeep and headed out of here around 1000 to begin our explorations. We were...

Mar 15, 2011 - Falcon Lake State Park

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, March 12, 13, 14, 15, 2011 Left the semi-posh surroundings of Bentsen Palms RV for the very opposite – Falcon Lake State Park, in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert beside a man-made lake, Falcon Reservoir, 99,000 acres of flooded desert land. Best bass fishing lake in the USA and there are dozens of fishermen here proving it. Neighbour in the campground caught a 10 lbs 10 oz bass, considers anything under 8 lbs a waste of time! He'd better catch something with a 22' Ranger Bass Boat & trailer being towed...

Mar 2, 2010 - Day #16

R.& R. day, went for a long walk this a.m., relaxed, read some. Loaded some stuff up preparing to move out tomorrow. Brought in Brenda's bird feeders & watering system. She's accumulated a list of 11 bird species + a javelena and a cotton rat. Talked to a couple of fishermen, fishing only fair, they practise “catch & release”. Caught a couple of 7 lbs+ and a few 5 lbs large mouth bass today. Didn't sound too bad to me. After supper wandered down to the “rec hall” to listen to the camper's jam session. What can you say? It was very...

Mar 1, 2010 - Day #15

March came in like a “lamb”, beautiful morning, temp got up to 31 C today but again with a very strong wind beginning in the early afternoon. Met a couple from Saskatoon, SK who grew up around Alameda and know the Freitags. Bill & Lila Nicholson, his dad was ex mayor of Estevan, he's in the airplane/airport business in Saskatoon. “Bill Nicholson Aviation Enterprises”. Finally got a couple of pictures of the Roadside Hawk. After chasing the bugger all over the park for 3 days he was perched on a pole about 200 feet from our trailer this...

Feb 28, 2010 - Day #14

Cooler and cloudy this a.m., + 14 when we woke. Drove west through Zapata to San Ygnacio to look for “Brown Jays” at the last remaining site left in Texas. With a great deal of luck we saw them. Drove TX #83 along a ridge overlooking the Rio Grande valley, really Falcon Lake, through desert scrub with ranch gates scattered along the way and natural gas wells all over the place. Falcon Lake is a huge reservoir stretching west for over 40 miles. Every so often an historical marker telling how a successful ranch, many established by Mexicans...

Feb 27, 2010 - Day #13

Went for a guided bird walk this a.m. and got 33 species. Herring Gull is pretty exciting down here! Drove to Salineno this afternoon and enjoyed the sit watching the birds coming to the feeders. For those that have been there with us the “Dewinds” (the couple who lived in the motor home and fed them) have given it up however a lady from Mass. has agreed to take it over and is doing a splendid job. US Fish & Wildlife have bought the 5 acres and she is a volunteer with them. Returned to the S.P. and viewed the infamous “Roadside...

Feb 26, 2010 - Day #12

Packed up and left “Americana R.V.” in our rear view mirror at about 11:00 a.m. Restocked the pantry for a five day stay at Falcon S.P. On Falcon Lake (reservoir) about 60 miles west of Mission. No groceries around there, she's in the outback! We're out of the irrigated agricultural part of the valley for a while and into desert. Arrived & set up by 3:00 and were warned that we should be careful at night and walking near the damn alone. The Mexican drug cartels are fighting among themselves and with the US Border Patrol, apparently there...

Mar 1, 2009 - Javelinas in our backyard - Feb. 17-20, 2009

I am soooooooooo behind in my blog postings. From Falcon we went to San Antonio for a week. And we are now in Kerrville. That’s just to catch you up on where we are now. But back to my story… After Harlingen, we made one more stop before leaving the Rio Grande Valley behind. One of the birding venues we visited while staying in Mission was a little place called Salineno, and near by was Falcon State Park. We remembered that the state park had some nice camping opportunities and we enjoyed our time birding there. So we thought it would be...

Feb 9, 2009 - Day Trip to Falcon Lake State Park

Last week we headed east down the 'valley' to visit the Wishnies at Harlingen. This week we headed west via Roma to Falcon State Park where our section of the Rio Grande's upper dam lies forming a lake on its upper side. The highway (83) becomes less urban and more rural as you head west from here. We stopped at Roma on the way which is right on the Rio Grande River and about halfway between Laredo and Brownsville. It's a city of mixed flavors and being right across from Mexico, the cultures seem to meld. We found an overlook that gave...
