What’s this - clouds in the sky? The first we have seen in weeks. After vetoing Donna’s plan to go back to sleep until they burn off we decided it was a perfect day to do some hiking. We headed out to check out Santa Helena canyon with hopes of launching our trusty kayak tomorrow. As the river is only about 20 feet across in places it’s going to be hard to tell exactly where the US/Mexico border is so suspect I may get my wish of going to Mexico fulfilled if only for a few minutes at a time. Jan 24, 2013 - Down to the border

Today we finally reached Big Bend National Park and are presently sitting close to the Rio Grande and about 200 yards from Mexico. We started our day driving south to Presidio then had breakfast sitting at the propane station waiting for someone to show up. The gates were open but nobody was around the office. This place is very close to Mexico so figured the same rules apply and the guy may never show up!!! The road east to Big Bend NP followed the Rio Grande and was steep and slow but offered some dramatic views as we chugged along. We...
