Mar 17, 2014 - Sandy Lake RV Resort

We arrived in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex this afternoon and it seemed construction was going on every freeway we found ourselves on. Roads that looked new 2 years ago are being replaced and it looks like boom town. Our plan continues to hang out here until we feel good. We're beginning to wonder when that might be. We'll lay low for awhile and try to get some rest. Our appointment in Iowa has been moved back to early April. More later.....

Jun 1, 2012 - Interesting Tidbits about Texas

Every small and big town has a Sonic and a Dollar General. (We went thru a town of 1200 that had nothing but a Sonic and Dollar General) If you are looking for a good soft chopped ice, Sonic is your best bet. Some gas stations and some Dairy Queens have the "good ice" but all Sonics have the same quality and size of ice chips. The elevation in the "Plains Area" is higher than the "Hill Country". It never seemed as if we were going up hill but the elevation kept going up and Charles assured me that sea level is the same everywhere. In the...

May 31, 2012 - Starting our life with Lucas

Turns out that we did need a whole new roof (which insurance covered). So, we are on the road again, headed towards Idaho to visit a Navy buddy of Charles. My only requests of Charles were that we rescue a dog and get one that does not look like Princess or Pentium (our Maltese that past away) cuz I didn't want to be comparing them. Fat chance! He doesn't look at all like our other dogs, but the memories of how they were have come rushing back. Getting a dog is so different than having a child. You can pick the size, color, gender,...

Sep 18, 2011 - Down Day

After Jim and Laura left this morning, Bob and Phyl decided to just make this a down day. Of course it helped that they no longer had access to a car and nothing was in walking distance. Bob watched DVDs and read and Phyl read, planned the route for leaving in the morning, and laid by the pool. The weather was partly cloudy and breezy, so it wasn't stifling, but still very, very warm. For a brief time Phyl thought it might rain, but that didn't last long. However, after dinner, it began to rain and the drops must have been very large since...

Retirement Rocks!!

Sep 15, 2011 - Finally on the way!!

We departed San Antonio this morning at 0830. The weather was clear when we left San Antonio, but the further north we drove, it began to cloudy, NO RAIN! We had decided to avoid highways, so we drove north on Texas 281. 281 is a nice drive, but it added almost 2 hours to the trip. We made good time until we got closer to Fort Worth. Big Cities are for the birds. In one town we had to enter a drive around. Wellllll, the GPS didn't make it very clear which way to go out of the circle, so we chose a way-wrong- turned around and tried...

Retirement Rocks!!

May 23, 2011 - Leaving home

Time to go on the road once again. Our bags are packed and so is the RV. The motorcycle is loaded, and so are our chaps, jackets and clothes for every temperature, since we don't know where we are headed this trip. We know the first part: Northern New Mexico and then into Colorado. We hope you will enjoy traveling with us once again this summer.

Oct 28, 2010 - Off to the Southeast for an annual history trip

Welcome to my newest trip journal! This one did not have Fred along, because it was time for my college buddy Wilma and me to take our annual history trip together! In the past, we have explored locations such as Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Newport, RI, the Hill Country of TX, Las Vegas, NV and the surrounding area there, the Gold Country of Central California, San Fransisco, Charleton and Savannah. This year it was back for more exploring in Charleston, Savannah and then on to the historic city of St. Augustine, FL for a week of...

Jul 6, 2010 - Our July 4 weekend fun with Avery and family

A wonderful, although short visit with Avery, Katherine and Chad made this holiday weekend special. Chad and Katherine took turns driving over here from Mississippi after work on Friday. They left Monday morning, so we had two full days to visit and play, and we crammed in a lot of visiting and playing during the weekend! Avery was very adaptable and slept well in her Pack and Play all three nights. She went to the fireworks with us, met so many new people, and never had any problems. In fact, she fell asleep just before the fireworks began...

Jun 21, 2010 - getting ready to leave sometime

We won't be leaving on our next adventure until after the July 4 weekend, but I am bored while recovering from surgery, so thought I'd get the new journal up and started at least. Our first planned stop will be in northwestern Texas to visit Palo Duro Canyon. Then we will go to Capulin Volcano National Monument in NE new Mexico, followed by a few days in the Taos, NM area, where we will visit my sister Dianne and some friends in Red River. After that, it will be on to Boulder, Colorado to visit our son Will and then we are rather loose in...

Apr 21, 2010 - Green grass and Asphalt drives

With the Nurse dropped off this morning for her shift work, I fueled up and slipped on the 35E back to the RV park and my ‘busy work’. With a eye towards the braking red lights in front of me and the GPS sounding off, I recall Donna mentioning the other day as we made the second practice run to the Hospital, how the driving through the Los Angelas traffic was a good thing, it taught us to be as aggressive as the locals, (my feelings) or cautious in congestive traffic conditions (her thoughts). We really never know what conditions will be...

Apr 26, 2009 - preparing for our trip

We are getting excited about leaving for our 5 week trip westward at the end of this week. Fred has been working on the RV, and has really made some great changes to it to personalize it for our needs. He has a wheel chock to secure the Harley in the back room, and has built some shelving to store materials more securely in the storage compartment in the front under the 5th wheel area. He added insulation to the storage compartments and built a great clothes rack that is convertible; it hangs up by the ceiling in the back room for indoor...

May 16, 2008 - Getting ready to leave

We are so excited and are getting ready to leave on our big adventure a week from today. We will not always have Internet access, but we will probably update this journal a couple times a week. We only have the first 3 weeks 'sort of' planned, and then we will plan the rest of the trip as we go. Our first stop will be in MS to see Katherine and Chad for a few days, but we will also go up to Greenwood to see Fred's Aunt Josephine too, of course. Our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stops will all be in TN. We will stay in the Lynchburg/Nashville area a few...
