Sep 11, 2018 - Big Spring, TX

Tue, 11 Sep: Lest we forget... Back on the road today. It was really dark and gloomy when we awoke, but not rainy. Once we finished our morning chores, got ourselves fed, and got things ready for the road we went outside and connected the car and went thru our checklists. Sandi rolled wheels a 0939 and headed out of the city park. A quick right onto the TX 534 loop road to I 10 and westward ho! About an hour later we reached the city of (appropriately named) Junction where we headed north on US 83. This was a mostly two lane road that...

2018 Travels

Jan 24, 2016 - Meteors, Minerals, and Petroleum

The sun was shining this morning as we left Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We had some very high wind gusts rocking us last night as we were perched on the edge of the plateau. Our route is taking us on U.S. 62-180 east, then Hwy. 652 east to Orla, back into the Central Time Zone. Next, we are traveling U.S. 285 south to Pecos, then I-20 east-all oil country. We have unanimously decided that highways 652 and 285 NEED "Adopt A Highway" because it is the trashiest stretch of road we have seen on the whole trip! At Odessa, Texas, we...

Oct 1, 2015 - Taking Care of Business

Said my goodbyes to Gwen and Dale - lots of hugs - and headed out for Big Spring for the evening. It took 5 hours because I made a couple of stops at old haunts. Upon arriving in Big Spring I took the car for inspection - required for Texas registration. Passed with flying colors! After dinner I came back to the hotel, showered, called Gwen and gave her an update , and am now making this entry. A very productive day.

Apr 17, 2014 - El Paso to Big Spring, TX

April 17, 2014 We realized last night that we were not getting our own notices of our journal update. I then found that 80% of my update notices were being “bounced” by Yahoo and Gmail. (AOL seemed to go through.) Obviously the site needs to update security , probably as a result of heart bleed Of course, I couldn’t reach anyone by email or phone. If you are interested in reading the journal you can go directly to http://www.mytripjournal.com/USandCanada. The journal is listed on the right. Click on it and bookmark for future ease. As most...

Apr 11, 2014 - Big Spring, TX

While we hated to leave Junction, we needed to get started west again. This day took us on Hwy 83 to Hwy 87, going through San Angelo, TX arriving in Big Spring, TX where we stayed at Texas RV Park at Big Spring. This was just an overnight stay where we got groceries, fuel and the truck washed. We did park by a couple from Dallas, TX that were now full timing it in a motorhome. Nice visit with them!

Mar 8, 2014 - Exploring George W. Bush's childhood homes

Most of today was spent exploring 2 of the Bush's homes from their early days in the Midland-Odessa area. As we have found unique perspectives in our tours of the presidential libraries, it was the same today. Both of the homes were preserved by local groups in the Midland area without the Bush's involvement, other than to share their personal perspectives and appreciation for what the community had done. This area continues to prosper because of the oil fields throughout this part of the state. We noticed many businesses, oil and non-oil...

Dream On

May 2, 2013 - Travel day - Big Spring, Texas

We woke to temps in the 30's and high winds. We headed out after saying good-bye to our friends, Sharon and Joe. The day was filled with high winds and rain but we made it safely. Then things started happening - the car would not start (dead battery) and no hot water, not because the water heater was broke but because of the "check valve". So on the phone we both got ------- Good Sams was scheduled to have someone come out in the morning to start the car and the Ford dealership in Big Spring will put a new battery in the car. Wow, one thing...

2013 - Here we come

Dec 10, 2011 - OTRA – TX - Big Spring

12/10/11 Grey, cloudy day when we left at 11:00 a.m. for Big Spring Texas and it didn’t get any better the whole 4 3/4 hours of the drive west on I-20. The green of the south central states is giving way to the brown of Texas and the western states. Passed a lot of big cattle ranches (cattle still look pretty good); through Abilene with no problems; and on to Big Spring. The Whip In RV Park is right off the exit which is quite convenient. It’s a bit crowded in here with a few overnighters but a lot of oil field workers living here...

Nov 22, 2011 - Day 3 (driving home)

Not much to report today. Just driving and driving. The most interesting part of the day was around Odessa, TX. and that is the Oilfields. Thousands of them and lots of refineries. But still the gas prices were around $3.35 for unleaded today. We're guessing there are no shortage of jobs around this part. Then, as we passed through Midland, TX we tipped our hat to George and Laura! We've stopped in Big Spring for the night and hope to get up early and maybe make 400 miles tomorrow.

May 14, 2011 - Big Spring, TX

We hit the road about 11:30 and headed 250 miles West towards New Mexico. The drive really showed Texas prairie and desert. Nothing for miles but there was miles and miles of wind turbines. Who is paying to install of them and who maintains them? We stopped in Big Spring , TX. I don't get the name because we can't find any springs. There is however a huge FINA gas refining plant here and you can smell the fuel from miles away. Were staying at The Whip In RV Park which is not the best RV park in Texas but it will do for the nite. We had to...

Jan 9, 2011 - Big Spring, TX

We left Arlington this morning in very heavy rain. We thought about staying another night but the rain was supposed to turn to snow mid-day and then freeze. We wouldn't have been able to leave for two days probably. We also saw on the radar that it wasn't storming to the west and Big Spring where we were headed was sunny. We ran out of the rain about 100 miles west of Arlington. In the first 50 miles we saw 3 cars off the road. People just don't know how to drive in bad weather. We've found a very nice campground just off the highway. It's...

Jul 10, 2010 - Left New Mexico Behind

From Whip In RV Park – Big Spring, TX Left the “Enchanted State” of New Mexico yesterday and have a 2 night stay in Big Spring, TX on our way back to the Houston area. We did thoroughly enjoy our 6 week exploration of New Mexico using our 3 home base cities; Taos, Santa Fe, and ABQ. But it is apparent there are other areas of the state we will need to add to our “places to visit” when plans allow us to pass that way again. This is what is so unique about just traveling and seeing this wonderful country. You may be in an area, but know you...
