Apr 10, 2018 - Charred Oaks

Charred Oaks Days 3-5: Saturday – Monday, April 7-9, 2018 We arrived at the home of Maryann’s brother (Bill) in Bastrop at 4:30 pm. It was, cloudy, windy and cold (43 degrees). Fortunately we were disconnected, leveled, and fully setup in about 20 minutes. Bill calls his place “Charred Oaks.” That name resulted when his home was destroyed by the Bastrop fire in the fall of 2011. A large oak in his front yard appeared to have survived initially, but it did not leaf out In the spring and had to be removed (see first picture). Bill had a...

Apr 8, 2018 - Deming to Bastrop

Deming to Bastrop with overnight at Fort Stockton Day 2: Friday, April 6, 2018—Deming to Fort Stockton We departed Deming at 8:35 am; the temperature was a cool 55 degrees and we had light to moderate trailing winds (5 – 10 mph). Our route was I-10 east with one variation—about 10 miles north of the Texas border (heading south from Las Cruces) we turned east and NM 404 which is part of a route segment that allows us to bypass El Paso. Beyond the pass we turned south on NM 213 then connected with TX 375 (a freeway) that takes us to I-10...

Apr 6, 2018 - Met Up With Josie and Terry!

Drove to Bastrop to meet Josie and Terry for lunch. They regaled us with stories of their adventures in the Rio Grande Valley this winter. Terry filled us in on their plans for the summer when they will be on the move all over the west coast. Lunch was tasty. We ate at an outdoor restaurant on the Colorado River . Next door was a distillery - Copper Shot. The moonshine was really strong so the bartender added peach to make it drinkable. If I was a native Texan I wouldn't have had any trouble getting it dowwn! {ha ha} Another fun day is...

It burned down every cabin,2-houses,cafeteria,chapel in other words every building and game activity on the property. The only thing that didn't burn was the gazebo at the lake. There was...

Don't wake me up

Mar 30, 2017 - George

It was day 2 for George in rehab today and things are starting to happen. They put him in a wheel chair and we all went outside. I couldn't tell you how long it had been since he had set outside. There working on getting him off the ventilator & plug up the trek. He was breathing on his own for 8 hours today. He's still on a feeding tube but now he will get 5 seperate meals a day through it instead of it feeding him all the time. They have pulled all of the tubes except the feeding tub out of him also. So all in all I would say it has been...

Mar 28, 2017 - moved north

We made a move to Colorado River RV Park, Bastrop Tx which is 30 miles East of Austin. The last time we were here was in 2013 back then it might have been 1/3 full and now it's full. Bettie had told me that they had 1 spot left for 3 nights. We had stayed here several times while volunteering at Wilderness Ridge kids camp. We tried to find a campground closer to Austin but they were all full. The most you could get was 1 night or none. The reason we are here is that they moved George today to a Rehab Facility in Austin. The infection has...

Sep 24, 2014 - Texas - Day 2

Today I drove around Houston. WOW. Houston is a huge city. It defintely is a expensive looking place. The buildings are all tall and elaborate. Very interesting skyline. I was really glad to get away from there and back out in the country. I will be driving on the I-10 for most of the remainder of the trip back to Arizona. Tomorrow I will be heading a little further north when I go to Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is the home of Nimitiz and now also houses a very large museum dedicated to the Pacific War. I'm looking forward to visiting...

Apr 20, 2013 - Catch Up Day

Today is a lazy catch up day. After posting that we were safe from the explosion in West Texas, I realized I hadn't posted for almost a month. So there were a lot of pictures to upload. But somehow I had managed to lose the folder on my computer with all my Texas pictures so I spend an hour redownloading and labeling. Seems like we have been in Texas a lot longer than just 2.5 months. I also got the cleaning bug today and everyone I have the secret of the universe to share with you now. Get your pads and pencils ready for the great...

Apr 18, 2013 - Waco/West Tx Explosion

Just want to reassure everyone that we are fine. Texas is BIG thank goodness and I actually thought that we were well away from all the excitement happening down here. However on the map it says we are only 125 miles from the explosion. There's plenty of rain between us and them and hopefully the wind is going north east instead of southeast in our direction. Anyway we are traveling to Corpus Christi (3 hours away) today to check out other campgrounds for a possible stay next winter. Prices seems to be much more reasonable there.
