Feb 1, 2018 - Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge

We took a drive through the Rio Grande Valley today to see some of the Texas countryside. Noticed more farming in this area with fields of cabbage, lettuce, and broccoli. Also passed some orange orchards. We stopped at the Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge and walked their trails. We also stopped in to see The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle.the original shrine was built in 1954 but was destroyed in 1970 when a low flying plane crashed into the shrine and exploded into flames. The shrine was destroyed with the exception of the...

Dec 31, 2014 - December 31, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 31, 2014 – Alamo, Texas HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope your weather has been better than it has been here. It started raining last night about 7 or so and has rained ever since. It is supposed to rain all the rest of the night and all day tomorrow. It made it to 46 today with a 20 mph or so wind so that the wind chill was 38. It was not as bad as it is elsewhere but still colder than I like. I thought it had stopped raining for a while this morning so I got dressed to go for my walk, but when I opened the door, it was raining. So, I...

Dec 30, 2014 - December 30, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 30, 2014 – Alamo, Texas Well, the predicted rain didn’t happen during the day today. I also didn’t get the cleaning done as I had planned. Instead I watched some TV and read. I ran out to the store to buy a bottle of champagne to have for tomorrow. I also got another bin as I needed it for Christmas decorations. Somehow, I didn’t pack as efficiently this year as last, and I had some things left over so I needed another bin. Everything is now packed up and stored in the car. Shortly after the 1st of the year, I’ll head up to Corpus...

Dec 29, 2014 - December 29, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 29, 2014 – Alamo, Texas It was foggy and cold when I got up this morning. When I checked the weather forecast, it said that today was the only day for the next week that it isn’t going to rain. We are not supposed to see the sun again until January 3d and maybe not even then as the forecast says partly cloudy. Partly cloudy often means all clouds and no sun down here. Will just have to wait and see. The sun did come out briefly this afternoon, but it didn’t warm up much as it didn’t last long. I got my Christmas decorations put...

Dec 28, 2014 - December 28, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 28, 2014 – Alamo, Texas It rained all night and rained either steadily or hard until about 2 this afternoon. I had already decided that today wouldn’t be a good day to be out and about because of all the going-home traffic from the Christmas holidays so the rain didn’t bother me. I don’t envy those folks who did have to drive in it today. The temp finally made it up to 52 about the time the rain stopped, but the wind continued to blow hard from the north. Not a very pleasant day. I read the Sunday paper, caught up on my email,...

Dec 27, 2014 - December 27, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 27, 2014 – Alamo, Texas I went to the grocery store early this morning and was able to get in and out without any trouble. When I got home I put up the groceries and then headed out to Staples. My desk lamp has a short in it, and I needed to replace it. They had a promotion going on that anything you could put in a bag they supplied, you could get for 20% off. Since I needed the lamp that sounded like a good deal to me. The day had started out with a light breeze and sun. By noon, that had turned into a heavy wind from the north,...

Dec 26, 2014 - December 26, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 26, 2014 – Alamo, Texas I was early to bed last night and slept late this morning. I’ve been going to bed late and getting up early so this was a change for me. I still got out and did my morning walk even though I was late doing it. There were only a couple of dog walkers out so I guess everyone slept in this morning. It was a nice day, and I had the windows open. It was too windy to sit outside, but I did enjoy the fresh air. I spent the day reading. It would have been a nice day to be out and about, but I thought the traffic...

Dec 25, 2014 - December 25, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 25, 2014 – Alamo, Texas MERRY CHRISTMAS. I hope you all had a wonderful day, lots of good food and everything you wanted for Christmas. I had a leisurely morning, opened my presents and was ready to go to lunch at 12:30. Brigetta and her husband picked me up, and we went to Martha’s which is a local restaurant. We met the rest of the group there. Altogether there were 11 of us. I had brought the Christmas crackers, and we all had fun popping them, getting our prize, reading the awful jokes and putting on our crowns. The meal was...

Dec 24, 2014 - December 24, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 24, 2014 – Alamo, Texas The wind has blown hard out of the north all day. It was 47 when I took my walk this morning and only made it up to 62 during the day. Still, the sun is shining so that is to the good. According to WeatherNation (much better than the weatherchannel as WeatherNation actually gives the weather and even knows that Alaska, Hawaii, the Florida Keys and South Texas are part of the US) this morning Hawaii is going to get a blizzard today. I had to stop and listen to that forecast! Evidently, the lower elevation of...

Dec 23, 2014 - December 23, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 23, 2014 – Alamo, Texas SUCCESS!!!! Joliffe and McGee finally got their baths. The 5th time was a charm. They got started about 9 and finished up at 11. The wind was beginning to get up by the time they finished. They moved across the street and did a 5er after they finished mine. By the time they finished that one, the wind was blowing over 20 mph. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be up on top of anything in that wind. I had promised myself that I wouldn’t be out and about until I had to go to the grocery store early Saturday...

Dec 22, 2014 - December 22, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 22, 2014 – Alamo, Texas There was actually a sunrise this morning, but in about 30 minutes it clouded over. The sun has been in and out the rest of the day. It was finally warm enough and not raining but McGee and Joliffe still did not get their baths today. The folks who do the work were running behind schedule and did not get here until almost 4 instead of 2:30 as they were supposed to do. It takes about 2.5 hours to wash and wax both of them so there was no way they could get done before it got dark. So, now they are scheduled...

Dec 20, 2014 - December 19-20, 2014 – Alamo, Texas

December 19-20, 2014 – Alamo, Texas December 19 – This was another grey day. I did get my walk in before it rained for a little bit. It was raw so I didn’t do much. I spent the day reading and napping. December 20 – Still another dreary day. I was looking for some info about a poinsettia show which they used to have In Mission. Evidently, they don’t do it anymore, but I did discover some interesting information. The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is indigenous to Mexico and Central America. In 1822 the US sent Joel Roberts Poinsett to...
