May 3, 2013 - Back on the Road

Thanks to all of you who have maintained interest and concern for Vicki and I. I was reminded this morning that I had not posted an update to the journal in a while, so will take care of that here and now. I completed the prescribed 33 sessions of radiation on March 25; had a few side effects from that and then more from my own decision to stop the pain medicine cold turkey, but survived all of that and am now back to about 98% normal. From here, it is just a matter of having PSA tests done 2-3 times per year, and hope that nothing more...

Jan 26, 2013 - Not Quite Done Yet

During my first follow-up visit with the urologist/surgeon following surgery, he reported that the pathologist's report indicated that the cancer had grown through the walls of the prostate gland, meaning that the surgery did not get all of the cancer "roots" or "feelers". His recommendation was that we proceed with radiation treatments, but since prostate cancer is a very slow growing cancer, that we delay the radiation treatments until recovery from the surgery was as complete as it was going to get. He referred me to a radiation...

Oct 13, 2012 - Surgery DONE!!!

Several of you expressed your caring thoughts about my upcoming surgery, for which I was very appreciative. So, now that it is over with (done Wednesday), I'll catch you up on the last few days. The docs had told me that the surgery would be 2-4 hours, and I ended up being "out" of it from a few minutes before 1:00 PM to something after 8:00 PM. The surgeon had to call-in a fill-in surgeon at some point to give him some relief. As the surgeon described it to me, the issue was the unexpected tight spaces in which he was working. I guess my...

Aug 28, 2012 - Surgery Scheduled

My surgery will be on Wednesday, October 10, at Centennial Hospital in Nashville. Dr. Eckstein, with whom Vicki and I both felt very comfortable, wanted to wait a bit longer than Dr. Head had originally indicated to allow the area sufficient time to heal from the biopsy.

Aug 22, 2012 - Life Happens

Life happens. My point in this posting is not to bewail “woe is me”, to draw pity or sympathy, nor to create a great deal of negative concern. Rather, my point is to notify an extended family of a development that they might want to know. The headline would read that I have been found in recent days to have prostate cancer. The byline would read that Vicki and I are facing the situation straight-on with a combination of realism and optimism. The details would read as follows. I have had elevated PSA issues for several years. I had two...

Jan 18, 2012 - Still in Springfield, Part II

Enough of you have asked how we are doing, whether we are traveling, etc, that I thought it might be worthwhile to post a quick update. Yeah, we are still here in Springfield, in the Driveway Campground, trying to decide the appropriate action for ourselves considering Vicki's mother's welfare, other family members, our own lives, etc, etc, etc. Its probably best that I not go into a lot of details on those issues here until we decide what is most appropriate. I will say that we have made a couple of adaptations here that has greatly...

Oct 6, 2011 - Vicki's Dad

Vicki's dad passed away very peacefully Monday night, October 3; funeral services will be tomorrow, October 7. The family is doing relatively well. As mentioned in the previous entry, Vicki and I will wait a few weeks before we begin to think about our future plans, depending on several factors but most importantly her mom. We still have lots of travel in our future, but maybe not so much in the near future. Family needs are much higher than travels in our life priorities.

Oct 1, 2011 - Still in Springfield

We are still in Springfield. Vicki's Dad went into the hospital on August 29 for an outpatient hernia surgery. We had planned to linger here until he recovered from that. However, complications developed and he has remained in the hospital since then, mostly in the CCU unit. The family met with the primary doctor yesterday, and will have a follow-up meeting Monday to discuss removal of the ventilator, in accordance with his stated wishes in his Living Will and the doctors' recommendation. The prevalent thought is that the lungs and kidneys...

Jul 1, 2011 - Another Change of Plans

Yep, you're right....Springfield, Tennesse, where we are sitting now, is definitely NOT Ishpeming, Michigan, which is where I mentioned in my last entry Monday night that we were headed. A couple of hours after I posted that entry, we got a phone call from Brian, our son in Washington, telling us that Heather's (his wife) father (Dale VanGorden) had had another stroke & was being held on life support at Vanderbilt Hospital until the family got there. He & Heather were in the midst of making arrangements to get themselves, Micah, Joelle &...

Nov 4, 2010 - Another Change of Plans

Received a phone call as we were driving to the NASCAR Hall of Fame that Vicki's mother was in the hospital with a suspected heart attack. This coming on the heels of her Dad's slow recovery from recent surgery, we turned the Jeep around, packed-up Phae, and headed to Springfield, got here about 10:00 PM. Doing another first, parked overnight in the hospital parking lot. Hospital Security staff has been very gracious and hospitable. (By the end of the day after we arrived, the docs had concluded that her problem was not a heart attack, but...

Jul 2, 2010 - Again, Adaptability & Flexibility

From the Driveway Campground in Springfield, just north of Nashville, Tennessee. The idea never becomes outdated; the value & need for flexibility & adaptability has proven its mettle again. One of our many blessings is our ability to respond to those needs. This past Sunday night, Heather’s (our Tennessee daughter-in-law) father had an episode involving a combination of a stroke & heart attack. Brian, our Tennessee son, was supposed to depart Monday to drive to Colville, Washington to begin a new career there July 6. Heather, Micah, Joelle...

Nov 30, 2009 - What A Shame

From Vicki’s parents’ driveway in Springfield, just north of Nashville, Tennessee. Well, other than enjoying the days with family, we haven’t been doing much since arriving here last week. We’re settled-in again to the driveway campsite. The weather has been cool to cold, with no improvement seen for the next few days, as I will detail in the closing weather report. So, since I don’t have any travel news to tell, I’ll do my next most favorite thing….get on a soapbox. Actually, in my sometimes weird way of thinking this soapbox & my advocacy...
