Apr 15, 2019 - Day Trip: Sevierville, Tennessee

This is our “extra day” in Gatlinburg. We take a trip to Pigeon Forge. We expect Pigeon Forge to be like Gatlinburg. It is not. A straight 6 lane highway runs through town. It is still a resort. We sign up for a helicopter ride. Unfortunately, it is a short ride. It is too windy to run the longer loops to the National Park. We travel fifteen minutes further to Sevierville, Tennessee. This is where the heliport is. We fly over the dam that forms Douglas Lake and over the lake. The water level is lowered in the winter in preparation for...

Mar 12, 2019 - Heather’s Hideaway!

We have arrived! Long time since we have had a mountain vacay. 𿘊⛰ We drove separately since Tim has to be in Columbus, OH for the following two weeks and we are already halfway up here in TN. Hannah rode with me and was happy to have a break from David. 𿤣 We grilled hamburgers tonight and nixed plans to grill anymore since Tim was most unhappy with the gas grill (instead of the charcoal one that was advertised). Nice little cabin but it is an A-frame so Hannah and I are bumping our heads a bit upstairs in the loft. Mama Ann is with us and...

Aug 26, 2017 - Sevierville TN – Douglas Reservoir - Douglas Dam Headwaters Campground

This stop was our base for visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is both a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, which are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. It is the most visited national park in the United States with over 11.3 million recreational visitors in 2016. That means the government is missing a big income opportunity here because there is no charge to enter this park like there is in other...

Retired at Last!

Jun 2, 2017 - Wandering around Sevierville, TN

We didn't realize that Sevierville TN is the home of Dolly Parton. Down the road about 5 miles from Sevierville is Pigeon Forge and down about 5 miles more is Gatlinburg. Pigeon Forge is the home of Dollywood and the Dixie Stampede, both Dolly's business ventures. If you remember the TN fires not too long ago, they occurred in The Smokie Mountains right at Gatlinburg. Dolly was a tremendous help to the people that lost their entire homes. She gave each family with such a loss, a $1,000 / month for one year to help them get back on their...

May 31, 2017 - Sevierville TN

We changed our plans and are going to Sevierville, TN instead of Charleston, WV. Decided wasn't enough that we wanted to see in Charleston, WV and we've been to Asheville, NC recently so we just picked somewhere else to stay. We booked three nights at River Plantation RV Park

Jun 18, 2016 - Sevierville, Tennessee

We made to Sevierville, TN. This is a town north of Pigeon Forge - the home of Dollywood. It's also on the route from I-40 to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our campground is located next to the Little Pigeon River, thus the name - Ripplin' Waters Campground. We met some of our friends this evening at the Smoky Mountain Opry located in Pigeon Forge. This was a variety show featuring an aerialist couple (originally from Ukraine), musical acts spanning several different genres from Big Band, Rock n Roll to Broadway musicals, and an...

Where RV This Year?

Apr 13, 2016 - Is it a coincidence?

We attended our first event at SKP ACRE tonight and a strange thing happened. When I walked into the room where the social hour was held, a woman came up to me after looking at my name badge and asked if I was from Riverside, NJ. I said yes, and she said her dad, Ray Hill, used to ride to work at McGuire AFB every day with my Dad. It's weird to have someone come up to you out of the blue like that. Even weirder, she turned out to be a class mate of Sue's as she graduated from RHS the same year. I don't think I ever met her before and Sue...

2016 Winter Trek

Apr 12, 2016 - On the Other Side of the Mountains

We moved to the other side of the Smokies today on I40. It rained most of the way, but by the time we arrived at River Plantation RV Resort the clouds were breaking up and the sun was coming out. I hope we are in for a good week at the Escapees SKP ACRE Rally. We spent about 3 weeks at River Plantation a couple of years ago while I was doing an energy audit for RVC Destinations. It a nice place with a couple hundred RV sites and some cabins. The've made quite a few improvements since we were here last including an RV wash. We'll have to...

Sep 29, 2015 - Pennsylvania, Virginia and Tennessee

This is the 4th year in a row that we have stopped in Bedford, PA on our way South. We arrived at Friendship Village Campground the day after Labor Day with plans to stay for the Oldies Weekend that happens here every year the weekend after Labor Day. We arrived to find our friends, Jan and Sheila already set up on the site next to us. We were pleased to find another couple, Bill and Darlene, who we met the first year, were also there. Bill and Darlene have had to miss the Oldies Weekend the last two years because Darlene was undergoing...

Sep 27, 2015 - Natchez Trace Parkway and Dixie Stampede

The day started with a peaceful drive up Natchez Trace Parkway. This is a beautiful drive with lots of opportunities to get out and take short hikes. Sandy really enjoyed it. After getting back on 40, the business and crowds of the Eastern U.S. returned. We had a delicious dinner and a great show at the Dixie Stampede. Then we drove through Pigeon Forge. What happened? This use to be a place that reflected the hillbilly culture of the Smoky Mountains and I enjoyed going to it. Now it is a tourist trap strip with everything you would find in...

Sep 24, 2015 - Days 41-45 Sevierville, TN

September 20, 2015 Day 41 Cumberland Gap National Park to Sevierville, TN We had a beautiful drive down US-25E through the Appalachian Mountains on our way to Sevierville, TN. Since we had reservations in Sevierville, we were in no hurry to get going for the 93 miles drive. US-25E is a 4 lane divided highway in excellent condition so we took our time and enjoyed the scenery. We arrived in Sevierville about one o’clock. After checking in and parking at the River Plantation RV Resort, we met up with some more of our friends, Ross and Marge....

Sep 20, 2015 - Sevierville, TN

September 20 We left the campground headed for the Allegro Rally around 9:45. We are going to take our time so that we can enjoy the scenery. It is somewhat overcast and threatening rain. I attached a picture showing how rocky some of the terrain is. We have gone through several construction zones and a lot of blasting is necessary to make the road. We stopped at a turnout which overlooked the Click River. There was a memorial to those that served in the military that were from their county. We arrived at the River Plantation RV Park around...
