Sep 4, 2018 - Back Where Christine Came From!

It was a pretty long drive from Woodstock, GA to Millington, TN, but good roads and a couple stops broke it up nicely. Just spent the 1 night at what used to be NAS Millington. Took a look around the base, but not much left that we recognized after 30+ years. Camp host was very nice for an old retired Sailor! Easy in and out, good satellite reception.

Jun 11, 2016 - Naval Personnel Command, Millington, TN

We dropped anchor at a military base north of Memphis, TN at Millington yesterday afternoon. Gosh darn, it is downright hot and miserable here. Temperatures are in the mid to high 90's and humidity running in the lower 40 %. "Feels like" temps are around 105 to 107. I would literally melt at 100 degrees and 80 % humidity. How do people handle this? Gimme dry heat. At least 100 degrees in low humidity and shade isn't really too bad. Too hot to do anything, so we caught up on chores. It has been 10 days since we last did laundry. The...

Where RV This Year?

Oct 20, 2014 - Graceland

You can't go to Memphis without going to Graceland can you? So of course we went. For those of you that don't know, this is where Elvis lived. And It was like stepping back into time, that's for sure. Lots of paneling, shag carpet, velvet, and fake fur. (How soon I had forgotten about the decorating styles of the 60's and 70's). There were lots of people on the tour so it was hard to get any photos inside the house, but it was not as big as I would have expected. But I'm sure it was a large house for it's time. They would not let you tour...

Heading to the East!

Oct 19, 2014 - Blue Angels in Tennessee

We ended up staying for two nights at the National Guard base in Arkansas, instead of leaving on Friday, as we had hoped, But that worked out fine. We were both pretty tired from traveling for 5 days straight, and we were glad to take a break for a day. Yesterday morning we headed for Tennessee, and arrived after 1500 yesterday. We are staying at the Naval Support Activity Mid-South, in Millington. (It seems So funny to have a Navy base without any water!) As we were settling up here in the RV park, there was a lot of jet noise, and who...

Heading to the East!

Oct 28, 2013 - Blues & Soul Museum and Milligan

We went to downtown Memphis and walked the historic blues area. Tour the Blues and Soul Museum (no photos) interesting learning of the impact this community had on Blues. Ate lunch at Shop B-B-Q, wonderful ribs! Mud Island was closed, so drove up to Milligan where Danny did his basic training. The base was closed due to a local shooting. We were told all the old building has been replaced, but the old hanger was across the street. Danny was not certain that it was really the old hanger. On the way back we stopped by a road side market, they...

May 29, 2009 - Memphis TN

Hi All, Thursday - We arrived at the Naval Support Activity campground around noon yesterday. After getting everything set up (Camper leveled, slides out, awinging out, and Chairs out) we headed off to pay for the site. This is the only place we visited where you had to pay at a different location. Now, I guess I have to tell you I was here 37 years ago when I went through boot camp. Back then the reserves had a four week boot camp with three weeks of mess cooking. So anyway, the recreation office was the galley then. I remember standing...

Apr 23, 2009 - Millington, TN - Dinner at Corky's BBQ in Memphis

(Ron Writing) This morning we found a laundromat near the Wal*Mart and did our favorite chore. By the time we finished it was well after noon and we were getting hungry. It wouldn’t be right to leave Memphis without a good BBQ meal so we drove over to Corky’s for an early dinner. Corky’s is generally rated as one of the two or three best BBQ restaurants in Memphis. This was the third time we’ve been in Memphis and the third time we eaten at Corky’s. Today we decided we like it even better than the Texas style BBQ we had a few days ago in...

May 16, 2008 - Bullseye!

We made it to Tennessee for the first match of our family's shooting career. We have decided that we will all be shooting together from now on, and this is our first match! I decided to coach the boys, and make sure the locals were comfortable with their ability to shoot and score targets. They were very pleased with the way they handled themselves, and gave the boys very high marks for range etiquette and responsibility. They were especially impressed with Jonathan. I think the assumed he was much younger than he really is because of his...

Apr 12, 2008 - Memphis Visit with Friends and Family

Leaving Petit Jean SP in Arkansas, we traveled to the Memphis area. Crossing Arkansas we had never seen so much water in fields with so many rivers in flood. We thought if it rained any more some of I-40 would be closed. Although it did rain more within the next week or so, it never quite reached the Interstate. We stayed at Meeman-Shelby State Park north of Memphis near Millington. It is a lovely park located in a bottom land hardwood forest. Just enough trees have been removed to build the campground entrance road and camp sites. We...
