May 1, 2005 - New Orleans, and on to Memphis

We decided to give the French Quarter one more visit prior to heading to Memphis on Sunday and we were glad we did! It was sunny and gorgeous (and allowed for some nicer photos & video). We got ready to go and then headed out for beignets and cafe au lait (again, yes...) this time for breakfast. Now, holy cow - visiting this area on a hot sunny Sunday morning - after a Saturday night - was filled with an array of, well, unpleasant odors, to say the least. We were just stunned at how filthy the streets were, though proprietors were in the...

Apr 2, 2005 - To Elvis Country

I had been warned that the wait can be long, so by about eight o'clock, I head to Buckstaff Bathhouse, the only one of the original ones that has been operational since 1912 and still is. For $47 (51 with tax), I get a whirlpool mineral bath, sitz bath (for lower back problems, basically your derriere is in the water, vapor cabinet, hot packs, needle shower, and a 20-minute massage. Wearing only a toga, I am taken to the bath. The walls are marble. All the faucets and fixtures are very old. The staff is efficient. When I ask Brenda, the...

Dec 28, 2004 - Memphis

Hi all. After a fairly express trip from Chicago, we arrived in a rather chilly Memphis, Tennessee. Our hotel was again quite close to the bus terminal and as we found out the next morning, we had quite a good view of the Mississipi river. We started off the day with a Memphis city tour that took us all over the city including the Peabody Hotel where thay have a quaint tradition of ducks that come down from the penthouse in the lift at 11am and waddle across the lobby, jump into the fountain, swim around until 5pm and waddle back up to the...

Zimbo's in America

Sep 13, 2004 - When I was walking in Memphis! (but no catfish please!)

Arrived in Memphis with one extra person! at 545 in the morning! Let me explain... While I was sat at the Greyhound station about to get on the bus to Memphis, I got chatting to a guy called Stuart. He went to uni at leeds and we got chatting and he said he had nowhere to stay in Memphis, so I eventually offered him the other bed in my twin room and we shared the cost of the room. Seems like a good idea, so we have now become 'travelling buddies'. Stu is at the end of his world trip (he went the other way round to me!) so I am getting loads...

Mar 6, 2003 - Memphis via Oxford and New Albany

Oxford is a breath of fresh air! The college town where Ole Miss is located, and a wonderful town. The campus is beautiful, and the little downtown square, set around the county courthouse, had the best shops and restuarants we've seen in the South. We had lunch at a recommendation from one of our travel guides -- and it was delicious -- no fried foods, real fresh ground pepper, and interesting preparations. Still too much salt -- they salt everything to death down here -- hope we don't have a heart attack! We spent too much time and too...
