Jul 1, 2018 - Old stone fort

We took an easy day and went to the Old Stone Fort that is not really a fort but was mistakenly named that by early European settlers. It was actually a ceremonial site used by the Woodland Indians 2000 years ago. Much has been damaged by later railroad construction companies but it is a hilltop encircled by stone and earthen mounds. Here were parallel stone walls situated to capture the sunrise on the summer Solstice, so this was most likely a holy site that was used for rituals by the many clans that occupied villages in the area. The...

Jun 30, 2018 - The caverns

This was a more productive day. First we drove to Monteagle to see the campus of the University of the South. This is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country - most buildings are of Gothic architecture . The college was founded in 1857 by the diocese of the Episcopal church and the building started in 1868 after the Civil War. The All Saints Chapel was built in 1904 and adjacent to it is the 134 foot Shepard tower with a 56 bell carillon. Concerts are given weekly. The campus was inspired by Oxford University. A 40 foot cross was...

Jun 29, 2018 - Manchester

Yesterday we drove through some heavy rain but it let up just as we got to the KOA to set up. We had lunch at the rest area 20 miles south and had to turn on the lights to eat as the sky was really dark. We saw a couple of lightning strikes ahead of us as we drove and when we checked in they said that lightning struck near the campground and they were under a severe weather watch till 7 PM. We are at the KOA which means trees and no Dish reception. We do have cable and WIFI so it’s not too bad. The space is wide and level and this KOA does...

Nov 20, 2016 - halfway home

Ken has impeccable timing. His alarm had us up and on the road as the first rays of sun rose above the palm trees at our campsite. We pulled into the motel here as the last remnants of light disappeared behind the mountains. Eleven hours of travel - something we never do in the motor home when he does all the driving, but not a big deal when I can provide him with some relief. Leaving on a Sunday was a good idea. When we drove through northern Orlando the roads were empty and Atlanta mid afternoon was not too bad either, except for an...

John is still not sleeping well. A cough keeps waking him up. I also get a poor night’s sleep. We have to move. The campground is full tonight. We opt to drive northeast for two hours. It’s a short day but we are both tired. There is not much to report. We are now in Tennessee. We pass the Jack Daniels Distillery. Another time, we would have stopped for the tour. Hopefully, we will have a better report in the AM!

Aug 15, 2014 - OLD STONE FORT

We saw on the map a state park called "OLD STONE FORT" and it had some geocaches on the trails. So we stop for a few days of camping and walking the trails. There is no stone fort !!! The people in the 1800's called this a sone fort because of the stones from the river that was used as a small wall that ran around the land of the Indians. The land was between the deep gorge of the river and the woods that ran about a mile. The main purpose of the wall was for the raising on the sun and the moon and to keep dates of the season, like fall ,...

WHAT'S NEW IN 2014

Jun 1, 2014 - Manchester TN

We arrived earlier than expected, we are now on Central time and will be on Eastern time tomorrow. That will mess you up. The drive here was beautiful, north of Chattanooga there are hills and curves, we changed elevation from 1000' in Georgia, 650' in Chattanooga and then up to 1950' before we descended into Manchester. We had forgotten how scenic I24 is. At the campground another story. We were moved to a satellite "friendly" spot that is short and $5 more only to find absolutely NO satellite reception. They do have cable, would have been...

2014 Eagle trip

Oct 14, 2013 - Day 14. Manchester And Tullahoma.

Eli and Sam came back last night, so we have been doing a lot of catching up!! They have a catering trailer which they take to festivals and do catering and had spent the weekend at a festival in Georgia, about three hours from here. We all took a trip to the Beechcraft Museum at Tullahoma. The US is very into museums and pretty much everything is preserved for posterity and provides a huge source of interest for tourist attractions. The Beechcraft Museum is located at quite a big airfield and every year they hold a “Beech Party”. This...
