Jan 4, 2013 - Spent Some Time Getting to Know my Uncle Jack better today ...

I'll have to admit, I don't know Uncle Jack very well, but I've heard a lot about him from many people. Actually, I'm speaking of Jack Daniels, who really isn't my uncle, but for today I thought it appropriate. We visited and did a tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg TN. Here they make the most famous Tennessee Whiskey in the world, with a very distinctive process that includes something we are very familiar with in Wisconsin ... maple trees. They make charcoal from maple trees and use it as a "drop by drop" filter of every...

Winter 2013

Oct 26, 2011 - Nashville To Lynchburg

Had breakfast with Jim and Diane and then it was time to part ways. I must admit that the goodbyes were pretty emotional. I will miss these dear friends this winter. What better way to perk up my spirits that to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. What I didn't realize was that Lynchburg is located in a dry county so there were no "spirits" to lift my spirits - somehow the lemonade just didn't cut it! Bettie, our guide, was an absolute hoot! So entertaining - a real Tennessee charmer. The tour lasted an hour and 20...

Oct 25, 2011 - Jack Daniels Distillery and Pontoon Boat Rides!

Another glorious morning with temperatures promising to soar up to the low 80s, bright and sunny outside and we were all up and raring to go! However, first order of business was to revamp the kennel for the pups to ensure Rocky won’t jump out of it again. So, Jerry and Rudy headed down to the barn area to work on it while Nan and I got things straightened up and ready for our outing! After a while, Nan and I decided to walk down and see if we could lend a helping hand and check on the progress. They were almost done and we just helped do...

Jun 24, 2011 - Lynchburg, Tennessee

We made a side trip to Lynchburg, TN to see the Jack Daniel's Distillery. They had tours , but NO tasting since it is a "DRY" county. It was pretty interesting. He bought his first still at 13 from a pastor and delivered drinks to civil war soldiers. He died after he kicked his safe, & got an infection in his toe. It's still quite a place. They use the whiskey barrels only once then sell them to other distilleries. I think Carl really had a neat time there (better than the museums I have taken him to- go figure!)

2011 Road Trip

Nov 16, 2010 - Jack Daniel's Lynchburg, Tennessee

Another rainy day in Middle Tennessee, but that didn’t stop us from our appointed destination for the day--Lynchburg. It was a short 25 mile drive from Shelbyville to Lynchburg through hilly rural Tennessee countryside. A pleasant drive except for the pouring rain. We arrived at Jack Daniel Distillery in time for the first tour of the day. Jack Daniel’s was established in 1866 and has the distinction of being the oldest registered distillery in America. Our first stop on the tour was at the rickyard. The thing that distinguishes Jack...

Scratchin' the Itch

Mar 25, 2010 - Lynchburg, TN

Spring is emerging in the state of Tennessee. Many trees in bloom, grasses are greening up and small wild flowers abound. On the way to Chattanooga we were drawn to the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg. This is the nation's oldest registered distillery and was started by Jack Daniels when he was 16 years old. As the story goes, he was taught, at the age of 7, how to make whiskey by a minister. Our tour guide was a native of Lynchburg, had the dryest sense of humor, and kept us laughing the entire time with her stories of Jack and his...

Where is Tortuga?

Oct 22, 2009 - Jack Daniel Distillery

Lynchburg, one of the best known places in all of rural America. They are big on hospitality here despite the 500+/- population. The Civil War and the Reconstruction years brought change to the tiny town. In 1866 the distillery was established. Today more than 100 buildings are listed on the National Register(historic). Tennessee is on a limestone plateau, lending itself to perfect Tennessee whiskey production. This means the spring water is pure, no sulphur, no lead. There are several common factors at each distillery. Location is a...

Jul 8, 2009 - No. 7 or No. 12

From Countryside Resort – Lebanon, TN Today we went in search of two hollows each located in a “dry county”. Why is the county being dry of concern? Because in each of these hollows you will find distilleries producing Tenessee Whiskeys. The law is such that you can distill the product in the dry county but you cannot sell it. Cascade Hollow was our first find nestled on the Highland Rim of the Cumberland Plateau about halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga in Tallahoma, TN. Located here is the home of the George Dickel Distillery where...

Home Sweet RV - 2009

Jan 6, 2009 - Jack Daniels

Visited the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg ... a 'dry county' - local liquor laws prevent sale of alcohol within county lines -- but you can sniff the 140 pc proof stuff on the tour around the oldest registered distillery in the USA. The unique feature of Tennessee whiskey is the additional stage of dripping it through charcoal before aging in charred oak barrels.

Oct 13, 2008 - A great place to park

We got into Lynchburg, TN early afternoon. Trying to find a campground in this little town was a little more trying then others. We have been depending on reading material and the Woodall's campground book on our computer. Well, it finally let us down. After numerous phone calls with noresponse we decided to take a look on our own. When we came to Lynchburg Wilderness RV park we found that it was pretty well vacated with not a level campsite in the whole park. At this point one of the squatters came out and said oh the owners are never...

Jun 25, 2008 - Home of Ol Jack

Today on our way to St. Louis, we stopped by the Jack Daniels distillery. It happens to be the only location in the world that makes Jack Daniels whiskey, so it was a must-stop along the way. It took us a bit off the interstate to get to Lynchburg, TN, but I think worth the visit. The impression I had on my first visit, and Robin agreed, that it's hard to believe such a seemingly small operation is the largest in the U.S., and supplies the world with their JD. Carrie found it interesting for the most part, Sophie just wanted to get back...

May 28, 2008 - Touring in Historic Lynchburg, Tennessee

We drove from Clinton to Cornersville, TN on Tuesday and set up camp at the Texas T RV Park, just off the highway. It took us about 7.5 hours to drive the 378 miles, because we stopped several times and also the rainy afternoon slowed us down a little. Diesel is getting more expensive by the mile, but we have a website now (thanks to my friend Shari!) to help us locate the best prices, so we will just keep on going! It rained a lot again Wednesday, so we rode in the truck instead of on the Harley to our destination of historic Lynchburg,...
