Apr 11, 2009 - Meriwether Lewis campground
Saturday April 11…10:00pm We were up at 6:30am, and we hit the road right away. The next free campground, at the Meriwether Lewis site, was 200 miles (320 kms) to the north east, so we had a fair bit of driving to do today. We stopped at Tupelo for breakfast. This small city’s claim to fame is that Elvis Presley was born here. We checked the internet for anything else to do in the area, but don’t find much of interest. They wanted $8 each or something to tour this little house where Elvis was born, and then another $6 to see the church...

Sep 20, 2008 - Kentucky Wanderings
We are now in Hohenwald, Tennesee, just chillin’. We did quite a bit of rammin’ around in Kentucky and we are whipped. The Kentucky Horse park was huge and they had lots of horse barns and arenas. We walked around a lot. Lots of horse history and many statues of famous horses. You could spend a couple of days there. We also took in a cave tour of Diamond Caverns. Very neat down there and cool(around 60 deg). We stopped and chatted with a couple of local boys wandering the woods. Funny one was in full velvet and the other completely cleaned...

Apr 24, 2008 - Natchez Trace in Tennesee
Tennessee- the state of volunteers. I don’t know about that but it sure is beautiful. We could have stayed here longer if possible cause so many roads and so much land that it just went on forever. The red flower is called Fire Red or Grass Pink depending which book you look it up in. There were just too many flowers to put on one journal entry. The lilacs, tulips and iris were out all over. The smells were intoxicating and I couldn’t get enough. We were in the back yard of the Natchez Trace which runs from Cherokee, Mississippi to...

Nov 27, 2007 - Nashville / Hohenwald, TN
Still excited from our immersion into the country scene, we started the day with a visit to Gaylord Opryland where a mega resort-shopping-conference complex houses the present Grand Ole Opry show. We learned during the off season, many of the week-day concerts are held at the Ryman Auditorium downtown, so the concert hall was closed. We poked around in the gift shop and made our way to the next stop of the day. The Hermitage was the home of our 7th President, Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel. We were on our own as we toured the still...

We have been wanting to check out the Natchez Trace Parkway for some time. While we haven't seen the whole scenic byway yet, what we've seen has been terrific. Lilli and Allana were able to see some deer and wild turkeys. They really enjoyed that. On the 28th, we went to the Middle TN county fair. The girls had a grand time riding the rides and even won a purple stuffed pony as a souvenir. Everyone had a grand time.

We made it into Tennessee just in time for record breaking temperatures. We were there for 3 weeks and all but the last few days it was over 100 degrees and in the evenings setting outside most night it was still to hot. The first saturday we were there we took a pontoon boat trip from the campground on Chief Creek Lake. The lake surrounds three sides of the campground, so it is very popular with fishermen. The campground itself sets right along the Natchez Trace Parkway which starts in the southwest part of Mississippi and runs for over...

Getting here was the best part. Our drive covered 100 miles on the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 400-plus mile scenic drive with no commercial traffic allowed and a speed limit of 50 mph. For most of the day, we were alone on the road, surrounded by woods and glimpses of parts of the ancient trail. The Trace was formed by animals and then by Indians who built mounds along the way. In the 1800s it was used by boatmen who had sailed down the Mississippi from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky to markets in Natchez, MS and New Orleans. Begun by the...
