Aug 23, 2017 - Carthage TN – Cordell Hull Lake - Defeated Creek Campground

This turned out to be a busy stop for us - lots of things happening here. When we arrived, we discovered that Roger had chosen a spectacular campground and site for our viewing of the total eclipse. He claims it was pure luck, but if so, he couldn’t have done any better if he had researched it for a month before reserving a site. Our site was perfectly located for the viewing. No trees to block the way and yet shade we could go to if it got too hot. We started the day of the eclipse off by attending the park ranger’s presentation on the...

Retired at Last!

Aug 3, 2011 - OTRA - TN - Carthage

8/3/11 We’re moving closer and closer to the east coast! Today our reservations were at the Defeated Creek COE Park in Carthage, TN. A very easy drive along I-40 again, slipping through Nashville (we want to come back to visit this city) and on to Carthage, about 50 miles east. Along the way, we passed Mousetail Landing and Bucksnort Road. Those two names just sort of tickled me. Pulled into the park at 1:15. Really nice park. We have a lot right along the water and, if it weren’t so dang hot and if we were staying for more than just one...

Oct 14, 2010 - Last Day in TN.

This was our last day at Camping With Lisa in North Central Tennessee. It was a crisp cool day and we could almost watch the leaves turning colors. The trees that are green and red and orange are the most beautiful. JoAnn went line dancing this morning with the rest of the gals. Apparently there were more "outsiders" who joined the group as well. That was a fine idea Ellie had and she is a good teacher. It got the women all doing something together so the men were left alone. Don't think that's what she had in mind, but that's how it...

Oct 13, 2010 - Hello and Goodbye

Ellie and the gals had another session of line dancing this morning. Again, they attracted other campers to join in with them. Ellie is a good teacher. Doug and Fillmore walked down to where they were performing to watch. Fillmore seemed to get into it and wanted to join in. Many of the trees are still green but there are a few that seem to have turned all at once and their colors are almost fluorescent. Against the green background they are stunning. Jenny and Don left today and Cindy and Ken arrived. They dragged in from their son's...

Oct 12, 2010 - Girls Day Out

This was Girls Day Out. The camp was quiet and peaceful. They all left about 930 this morning and Lisa led them on a scenic tour of the area. The autumn colors are bursting out more each day and she gave them quite a tour. Even in the park, the leaves are brilliant. They went to a Bed Bath and Beyond, to the Olive Garden for lunch and to a Verizon store to get Ellie's Droid replaced. They were gone most of the day. Tony, Lisa's husband assumed control of the barbeque trailer and he cooked enough ribs, and chicken and pork roast to feed the...

Oct 11, 2010 - Friends and More Friends

Today has been truly remarkable. Our good friends Darrell and Judy of Wandering America fame, have parked their rig close to Nashville and we naturally planned to get together for a short visit before they head on down to LA--Lower Alabama. With the refrigerator thing, our schedule has been kinda up in the air. Saturday, I noticed Darrell’s posting on FB that several Escapees were in town. Now there’s a party to crash. We made our plans and today is the day. A large group of fellow RVers have congregated at the Corp of Engineers park near...

Scratchin' the Itch

Oct 11, 2010 - Line Dancing

Things have settled into a pleasant routine here at Defeated Creek. There has been no agenda other than happy hour and a loose plan of what to bring for dinner afterwards. On Sunday some people watched the football games and others like us lounged around in the rig. Sunday evening we had a grill out with hot dogs, a wide variety of hot dogs. We ate around Mac and Netters rig which had satellite so we could keep track of the football game. Tennessee was playing and that is quite naturally a favorite around here. This morning, (mid morning)...

Oct 9, 2010 - Ugly Football Game

It was another perfectly gorgeous day in Tenn. The group at our "rally" seems content to have no agenda and resting seems to be the main pastime. Doug went down to Jim and Ellie's to watch the IU game at 11:00. By 11:15 he was totally disheartened. We switched to another game and in a few minutes that too became a rout. Doug ate the sandwiches Jim and Ellie provided and when they didn't offer dessert, he went home pretty discouraged about football for the weekend. This evening we went across the street for happy hour and visited with the...

Oct 8, 2010 - Another Collective Grill Out

It was another easy restful day. Most of the people we are camping with seemed to take yesterday off to rest up. Today, although there were no formal plans, most of us stirred from our rigs some. As we compared notes, most of us drove out to an overlook which was staggering in its beauty. We found a very easy paved 1/2 mile trail which we doddered around. Then we drove through Carthage, a nice little town. There is a WW on the edge of town but the rest of the area is a typical small midwestern or southern community. It looked like it would...

Oct 7, 2010 - Rest in Beauty

It was a beautiful day today. This is a magnificent park. Natasha says it is the prettiest they have ever stayed in. We agree that it is right up there. Ellie and her dogs wandered by late this morning and we went for a walk around the area with them. There is a pretty lake with lots of fisherman and Doug witnessed several with strings of fish. This afternoon we spent in meditation/naps. This evening we went down to Ellie and Jim’s Castle to watch football on TV. It was a quiet relaxing day; a day that can be rare even among full time...

Oct 6, 2010 - Defeated Creek Campground

We probably set a new world’s indoor record for getting up and getting on the road today; at least for us. We were pulling out of the park at 8:05. It was a beautiful trip across I 40 westward. We wound through the mountains and even though the leaves were not turning as yet, it was a very pretty trip. Doug has figured out that there is some good in everybody, even Fred Wishnie. We he was in Asheville he told Doug about the truck washes he uses to clean his rig. Doug was amazed that they actually cater to RVs and charge as little as they...

Apr 22, 2008 - Salt Lick Corps of Engineers (COE) Campground

From Huntsville we headed to our favorite campground, “Salt Lick”, a COE campground on Cordell Hull Lake. It is about 30 miles from I-40 near Carthage, Tennessee which is another 30 miles or so east of Nashville. Someone wrote about staying at a COE campground saying it is like living on a golf course. That is good description of our campsite. The view out our dining room window was to a large mowed grassy area. Every evening a group of 5 or 6 deer would come out to graze. One evening a wild turkey walked across. The campground probably has...
