Sep 29, 2015 - Disaster Averted

Today started out just fine as we left Virginia heading south on I-81. In order to get to the Interstate we had an interesting drive over some mountain roads, but only for about 20 miles and then it was pretty easy going. Before we left, we added some coolant to the engine which our computer told us was needed and some additive to the diesel to keep water from developing and then we were on our way. Just before we got to our stop for the night the LP alarm went off again. We had been told to have it replaced and hadn’t had a chance to do...

Sep 23, 2012 - West Virginia, again and onto Tennessee

We had a great week in Milton, WV where we got to spend time with our friends Chris and Dave. As usual this meant lots of fun conversation and plenty of good food. We just had to make another trip to Hillbilly Hotdog in LaSage, WV. This time we were there to see a hungry young man take the “Home-wrecker Challenge”; eating a 15” hotdog with all the fixings in less than 12 minutes, he did it in about 9 and a half minutes, his prize, a Hillbilly Hotdog T-shirt and probably an afternoon of indigestion. The weather was much more pleasant than...

Sep 21, 2012 - Driving Through Virginia

It's been a good day. We had a beautiful drive down Virginia on Interstate #81. The sun was out, the traffic was not too bad, and the scenery was lovely. Virginia really is a very special place. We love the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley, bordered on one side by the Shenandoah Mountains, and by the Blue Ridge Range on the other. You can almost hear the song, "Oh Shenandoah!", ringing in your ears as you watch farmers working their fields and cattle/horses grazing on the hillsides. It's like Vermont, except warm and in the sunshine....

Aug 8, 2011 - OTRA - TN - Bluff City

8/8/11 Off by 9:30 for the total I-40 drive to Bluff City/Bristol Tennessee. Even the drive around Knoxville was relatively easy. I surely am going to miss these wonderful roads once we get to Pennsylvania. Pulled into the Lakeview RV Park at 12:15 for a total drive of 140 miles. Lots of trucks on the road today and lots of hills! Not used to hills after coming from the west. And, obviously, tons of green. After getting set up, we took a drive into town for diesel and a look-see. The campground is only a few miles from the Bristol Motor...

Aug 4, 2011 - Start of Journey; Bluff City, TN

We began our journey on Thursday, August 4, 2011, leaving Pittsboro, NC, about 9:30 am and heading west. We drove up to Boone and over the mountains. This trip was made in our new 2011 Roadtrek 210 Popular. We had our guide to the national parks, a guide to the state parks, and our guide to eternal life (Bible). We hope to visit many national and state parks on this trip. With the Roadtrek, which is only 22 ft. long, we can go anywhere we want to. We chose to travel the back roads and stay off the Interstates as much as possible. We drove...

Jun 1, 2010 - Bluff City and Buffalo Mountain

We are now camping at the Lakeview Campground in Bluff City, TN. We are here for a week. It is the second time that we have stayed here, although I don’t remember our last visit two years ago. Sue says that she and Arnie remember Boone Lake that is across the street from the campground. I do remember that two years ago Arnie and I followed the White Rock Trail to the top of Buffalo Mountain in Johnson City, about eleven miles from the campground. This time all three of us made the somewhat strenuous trip up the mountain for a view of...

Oct 28, 2009 - Lakeview RV Park in Bluff City, TN

The rains finally stopped about mid morning on the 28th and the sun came out. This is a nice campground. It is built on a hillside with large terraced levels for the RV's. Most sites are quite wide and deep for bigger RV's. It is only a few years old so everything is new and they have maintained it very well. Our site is four levels up from the lake and has a very nice view. The lake is generally very calm and like a mirrow in the mornign with reflections of the trees on the hillside. We have a very nice site with a great view. We will...

Oct 27, 2009 - Getting out of Stoney Creek

We had planned on staying at Stoney Creek for a week but since we ended up in a less than full hookup site and neither Pat nor I could sleep, worrying about getting back over that narrow bridge, we left there on the 27th. We were both up early (Unusual for us) and were packed up, stowed items and hooked up by 8:30 a.m.. OK thereis that bridge. I had been thinking about how I would approach this thing with a hard right turn at the other side. My planning must have been right because as I slowly approached and crossed I could see inches of...

Oct 1, 2009 - Bluff City, TN, Lakeview RV Park

Staying in one of our favorite RV parks ( Lakeview RV Park)in TN while we visit our kids, Justin. The weather is very nice, but once again we've missed the turning of the fall leaves by about 3 weeks I think. We need to remember to come here at the END of Oct. next time!

Nov 2, 2008 - Bristol, TN

We are in the eastern corner of Tennessee, near the Virginia border. There aren’t a lot of tourist attractions in this area but we have managed to find things to do. This area is called the Triple Cities, imagine that, Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport. One day we drove to Johnson City, TN and found a large mall. One day we went into downtown Bristol. In 1998 the US Congress designated Bristol as the “Official Birthplace of Country Music”. The state line between Tennessee and Virginia runs right through downtown Bristol. One side of State...

Oct 30, 2008 - nascar

We are now in Bluff City, Tenn. We left Natural Bridge, VA. and headed down I-81. We had stayed an extra day in Natural Bridge because of the high winds on Tuesday. Well, guess what? Yep, the wind was blowing almost as hard on Wednesday, but we hit the road. Skip said it wasn’t too bad, but Cindy said she was ready to park as soon as possible. She got out her Next Exit book and kept telling Skip that there was a Wal-Mart at mile marker whatever and if he wanted to stop, it was fine with her. Skip said the only thing that bothered him was...

Oct 19, 2008 - Bluff City, TN

Sunday morning we said our good-byes knowing that we would see each other in five weeks for Thanksgiving. We hooked up our camper, crossed into Virginia a few miles down the road and, nearly eight hours later, we crossed the Tennessee border (Virginia is one, long state!). The drive through the Shenandoah Valley along the Blue Ridge Mountains was gorgeous, reminding us a bit of Vermont with its rolling hills and wide open spaces. As we drove, we marveled at the fact that in the 1700s this was as far west are our country extended. That...
