Aug 31, 2018 - Long drive for the long weekend

This was a very long drive and the closer we got to Watertown, the worse the road got. Made it though and had a great campsite even if too close to the playground. Henry tried to WD40 the one swing (of four) that the kids always selected - that and the small round-a-bout carousel - which was a hoot to watch the kids play on :-). We became aware during the drive - and once at the park - that we were on the migration path of the monarch butterflies and the pelicans. Casino Speedway had good racing once the rack came in - it was their finale...

Aug 31, 2014 - Is 4 the same as 04?

We arrived at our campground in Watertown and stopped by the office to check in. We had reservations and the clerk confirmed that we had reserved Site# 4 and told us to just back in and set up. No map. No nice greeting. No welcome to the park. Oh, I forgot to mention that it was raining. We normally try to scope out the site before parking. When we saw Site# 4, which was right across the road from the office, we both shook our heads and said no way was it going to work. It was too short, too narrow and was a funky layout with poles and...

Aug 28, 2014 - Goodbye Minnesota

After 36 days, we said “Goodbye” to Minnesota and are now in Watertown, South Dakota. Most of our stops in Minnesota revolved around RV parks located near a rails-to-trails path. We certainly enjoyed the bike rides. While in Brained, we cycled the last section of the Paul Bunyan trail that just opened last year. Our ride took us from Brainerd to Crow Wing State Park. We couldn’t enjoy our lunch stop too much since the mosquitoes finally caught up with us in this heavily-wooded park. Our stop in Brainerd also happened to coincide with the...

Aug 21, 2014 - The Road to Watertown, SD

Today we visited 2 sites we really enjoyed. First was the Interstate Park which is on the east side of the Dalles of St. Croix river in Wisconsin. The park continues across the St Croix river into Minnesota. It is significant because it is one of nine units that comprise the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. Glacier meltwater carved this gorge and it is very picturesque. We hiked up to a point that we could get some good pictures. As we were leaving, we heard a loud voice. Jerry said it is just someone with a megaphone probably leading a...

Jun 19, 2014 - From Missiles to Turtles

This morning we drove to Grand Forks, ND to see a Japanese garden that sits in a city park. We then drove to Cooperstown, ND to take a tour of a dismantled Minuteman Missile Site. After that we went to Jamestown, ND to see the white buffalo - White Cloud. We did not see her because we were told she was in hiding since she had given birth 10 minutes before we arrived. True or not, it makes for a good story. After tomorrow we are officially heading home.

Jul 17, 2013 - Watertown SD and another fix-it for RJ

and an ironic name for this stop. as I was walking the dogs, I noticed a large amount of water under our rv...RJ checked and found the fitting that attaches the hose (or whatever...) was broken...needless to say, he fixed it...not sure exactly how, but again, the man is amazing...just keeps fixing the problems...never even mentioned the stop we had for the electrical problems...but he found the answer once again...I am so impressed!!

Sep 15, 2012 - Until next year

Watertown, SD. This morning everyone said their final farewells to the loons on the lake and packed up. The other 2 couples drove all the way home, about an 8 hour trip. Jim and Sandi are averse to such long jaunts but did put in a long day for us. Because we had such a long drive we did not have much diversion along the way. We enjoyed the falls colors while still up north but noted there was not much to look at as we headed south. The original intention was to make our way to Boston to join an 8-day Trafalgar Autumn Colors tour. We are...

Sep 12, 2011 - Watertown, SD (Day 2) - Redlin Art Center

(Ron Writing) Several days ago the air conditioner in the truck stopped working. I made an effort to diagnose the problem to no avail so this morning we took it in to the Chevy dealer here in Watertown. It took the mechanic quite a while to diagnose the problem but he finally found it. Underneath the large fuse box under the hood he found a mouse nest and the critter had chewed off a wire that controls the clutch on the AC compressor! With the wire repaired we now have air-conditioning again. Of course they are now predicting much cooler...

Sep 11, 2011 - Watertown, SD - Another Travel Day

(Ron Writing) It was another travel day. We left Fargo early this afternoon and headed south on I-29. This afternoon we crossed into South Dakota, our “home state”. It’s the first time we’ve been here since we came here to get our driver licenses over four years ago. Late this afternoon we arrived in Watertown, SD where we are spending the night at a WalMart Supercenter parking lot. We are parked right beside a cornfield – makes this Iowa boy feel right at home! Weather: Overnight low was 63°, today it was sunny with highs in the high...

Apr 5, 2010 - Renewed Road Trip

Well hello everyone! We wintered in South Dakota, you would think we would have better sense to go further south! Overall it was a good winter, not too much bad weather, lots of snow with only 2 bad blizzards, otherwise just good old snow fall. We are melted out now and waiting for the ground to dry more so we can pull our rig out of storage and get going. It was a good time to catch up with Tim and Di, Brenda's brother and sister-in-law as they live in Watertown. We spent Thanksgiving day with them and had many other occasions to visit and...

Sep 20, 2009 - Travel Day

We left out of Casselton this morning on I-94 then to I-29 stopping at a Flying J to get propane, but no luck. They said they couldn’t sell propane today to RV’s as they had no way to measure it??? We thought he was joking at first, but no he wasn’t. Not sure just what all that meant, but lucky for us we didn’t need it that bad. Traveling down I-29 again all we saw was cattle, soy beans, and corn. The land here in this part of North Dakota is flat as a pancake and sparely populated just a few ranch houses every now and then. There are...
