Sylvan Lake, Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and Black Elk Wilderness (Black Hills National Forest) I know that I have said this before, but this part of South Dakota is simply awe inspiring; from the needles and its namesake Needles Highway, to Sylvan Lake to the Black Hills prairie, the area is a study in contrasts each with its own stunning beauty. The area that surrounds Custer State Park is part of the national forest system including the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and the Black Elk Wilderness in the Black Hills National Forest....

Aug 14, 2009 - Needles Hwy to Sylvan Lake to Hill City

After the big buffalo scare, we were on our way to the Needles Highway. Little did I know that I would feel very anxious again. Narrow, winding roads that had hairpin turns at high altitudes were all through this 14-mile drive on Highway 87. The name "Needles" comes from the slender granite peaks that characterize this area. There are Cathedral Spires, a series of pinnacles that resemble church spires, and the "Needles Eye," a granite formation that looks like the eye of a needle.
