Nov 2, 2007 - Black Hills of South Dakota
On our speed journey south to Denver we decided to have a two night break in the Black Hills of South Dakota stopping at Spearfish at the Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort which we would highly recommend. As in North Dakota we decided to have a tourist day and took the Spearfish Canyon's Highway 14A, a National Scenic Byway. The road twists through the 19 mile gorge where Spearfish Creek lines the canyon floor and white limestone cliffs rise on either side. Famous for its beauty, Spearfish Canyon was the location for several scenes in the movie...Jump to full entry
Oct 14, 2007 - Spearfish, South Dakota
Crossed the state of South Dakota today on I-90. It rained all the way. Not hard but drizzled. When we got to Spearfish late this afternoon it was clear and the sun was out - not to confuse that with WARM. Although it is so nice to be out of the "hot and muggy". Going to hang out here for a couple of days before making the last lap home. And of course, Pepper is beginning to ask "Are we there yet?"Jump to full entry
Sep 14, 2007 - Leaving Custer on our way to Spearfish, SD
Nothing much to report today. We were going to go to Crazy Horse Memorial. However, we saw it from the road on the way to Mount Rushmore and on the way to the campground. Its not done (in fact you can just make out what it is going to be at this point). Neither of us feel very well (we both have colds) so we decided to take it easy and just move on to our next destination - Spearfish, SD. Staying in Chris' Campground - Site #53. We will use this as a base to go to Devils Tower Monument and Deadwood, SD. No photos for today.Jump to full entry
Aug 4, 2007 - Little Big Horn Nat'l. Monument
8/4 We were actually sad to leave, but we finally pulled ourselves away and started out across Montana towards South Dakota. Our first stop was in Montana to visit the Little Bighorn Monument. We spent more time there than we expected we would and were very taken with the whole experience. We listened to a Ranger give a talk that brought to life the horrible events that took place there. We took the path that led to the grave markers for the soldiers, the Indians and the horses that perished during the battle. After leaving the monument, we...Jump to full entry
Jul 9, 2007 - Where are we again?
Spearfish, South Dakota—what are we doing here? Our itinerary says Beulah, Wyoming!! Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Our campsite at Beulah was totally unacceptable for us—we stayed about ten minutes before packing up and leaving. I won't go into detail, but it was hot (100 deg.) and we were very unhappy campers. Fortunately, just 15 miles down the road was lovely Spearfish, SD. Spearfish is at the edge of the Black Hills and we had a much better campsite. There were several scenic drives and the one we chose went down Spearfish...Jump to full entry
Jun 30, 2007 - Spearfish and the Black Hills!
Note: I started writing this entry before midnight. I see it's past that now, so you'll have to excuse places saying "today"; interject "Saturday" in all such places! ************ Why do I always wait until bedtime to start writing my trip journal?? The last time I wrote, we were staying at an RV park in Gillette, Wyoming. Since I've always heard you shouldn't say anything if you can't say something nice, suffice it to say that that place has a long way to go before running for park-of-the-year! That said, however, Gillette has a...Jump to full entry
Jul 15, 2002 - Spearfish, SD
We've been in Spearfish, SD for a couple of days now. Really a neat little town. Took time to get some laundry & dry cleaning done, pictures developed, grocery shopping, etc. Took a beautiful drive yesterday afternoon up Spearfish Canyon -- another WOW place. Their most famous waterfall was disappointing, but found a neat resort tucked into the hills - Spearfish Canyon Resort - had a delicious lunch there, although there are many nice places to picnic. The road continues to Lead (oldest continuous operation gold mine in the western...Jump to full entry
