Aug 20, 2020 - Its finally cooler today...

It was 70 degrees @ 0800 this morning, with 50% humidity. Its going to be hot one again today. We are heading south with the destination of Salem, SD. We had an interesting evening yesterday. Poor Spike spent a couple of hours on the phone with Punjab at Dish Network. When we put up the satellite dish and turned on "the Hopper" we had no programing at all. I think they deleted all of our programming. When the guy finally believed Spike and reset the programming, guess what? We had it back. Spike knew more about the system than the "RV...

RV-Travels-2020

Aug 11, 2017 - Salem S.D.

We had a nice lunch with Janet's first cousin and her husband in Luverne, MN. after spending one night in Welcome, MN. We traveled on to Salem, SD, where we met Rick and Becky from Kimberling City, MO. They will be our traveling companions for the rest of this trip. What a blessing to have good friends and family. They also brought 4 weeks of our mail. Ugh! All of us decided to visit the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, so our next travel day would be less rushed. What an interesting place. It is the only corn palace that remains in the U.S....

Aug 25, 2013 - Salem, SD

Day 13 Salem, SD 8/25/2013 We had a pleasant drive through Iowa and into South Dakota. We have been this way before, so there were no chickens to stop and see that we hadn't already seen. Perhaps tomorrow we will find some to see. We stopped at a little campgroud out in the middle of nowhere. They did have a pool and internet access, so it wasn't bad. We will be heading toward Deadwood tomorrow. Hopefully it will bring some pictures.

Aug 14, 2012 - 1880 Dakota Town

As we drove across South Dakota we just had to stop at the 1880 Dakota town. It had quite a few movie props from original movies that had been filmed in this area. They used a local large ranch to film the prairie scenes from Dances with Wolves. They used the largest buffalo herd in existence, 3,000 strong. They had the created horse used in the scene where the horse dies and also had several buffalo that were created for the scene where they kill buffalo. They had also moved and rebuilt the army hut Kevin Costner used in the movie. They...

Go West Trip 2012

Jun 2, 2010 - Salem, SD

We were up at 4am and on the road by 5am. The day started out nice, but then we ran into heavy rain and wind around Kansas City. We decided to stop and fuel up while we were waiting for the weather to clear up some. Within an hour, we were back on the road again. We traveled 554 miles, and then stopped in Salem, SD at Camp America a nice, quiet, well kept rv park with reasonable prices. We relaxed and let Taco play outside for awhile. It is 9:07pm here and still daylight, but it's off to bed for us so we can be up early again....

May 6, 2010 - And, now to Salem, SD

After listening to the weather radio, we changed our plans and headed due south from Fargo. It seems that the center of this storm is in the western portion of ND. We have been carrying the weather radio in the truck and just charging it up at night. We certainly enjoy the security of having the weather radio with us all the time when there is unstable weather. And, now that we know the bad weather in Bismark, ND, we appreciate and thank God for being our co-pilot. As we progressed south, (with our bungees cords in place) the winds slowed a...

Jun 27, 2009 - Where is the Corn???

Today was much better. We drove into cooler weather. It is 78 degrees out, windy and very low humidity. We left around 9 a.m. this morning and drove 345 miles to Salem, South Dakota. I think Wanda is done looking at corn fields. They have been with us since we left Kentucky and drove into Illinois. Our only situation arose about 40 miles south of Sioux City. We ran low on gas and there was not where within miles to stop and fuel up. We lucked out and got off in a small town. We had to stop and ask for fuel. A nice gentlemen took us over to...

May 8, 2007 - Road Day

May 8th - Mile 1571 Another road day. Took the blue highways north through Iowa and Minnesota. In the pretty town of Spring Valley turned west onto Rte. 16 which is designated the Laura Ingalls Wilder Scenic Highway. Minnesota must have been the location of her first book - Little House in the Big Woods. Although Iowa and southern Minnesota are geologically the same, there was a distinct contrast between the two states. Minnesota appeared more affluent. The roads were in far better condition and the farm buildings and equipment were in a...

Aug 23, 2006 - Salem, SD

Arrived at Camp America Campground in Salem, SD for an overnite stay on our way to Custer, SD. The campground was small, clean, nice pull thru sites with full hookups. That next morning we encountered a black lab dog in the campground that we saw roaming the night of arrival. It appeared very hungry and thirsty so of course we gave it water and tried some food. Linda went to the office to report the dog. The owner knew who the dog belonged to and called them. The dog owner was willing to give the dog up. I hitched up quickly and pulled out....

Jun 8, 2006 - Sioux Falls, SD

LEAVING KANSAS - THE JOURNEY BEGINS Our plan was to get to Sioux Falls, S. Dakota by 5 p.m., so we could pick up our mail and talk to the insurance man there. We barely made it by 4:45, everyone was very nice and we got all the business done we needed to do. We spent the night in a campground just outside of town. It was very windy all day and night. We were having problems pulling the camper the last part of the day. The truck didn't seem to have enough power. We called Eleanor's brother Doug, and he called his diesel mechanic friend. They...
