Sep 28, 2016 - Rapid City, SD - Badlands, Flat Tire, & Meeting Up With Friends

(Ron Writing) We left Cedar Pass CG around 11 AM and drove the park road to the west where it intersects SD-240. Along the way we stopped at many overlooks to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The weather was perfect today with a light breeze and clear blue skies. We were heading north on SD-240 toward Wall, SD when the Pressure Pro tire monitor indicated we were losing pressure in the left rear tire of the trailer. We found an abandoned farm yard to pull into and changed the tire there. It looks like the tire is ruined. It looks like there is...

Sep 28, 2016 - No Bull

2016-09-28 – No Bull As many of you know, we drove the 2500 miles from home here to South Dakota to attend the 51st Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park. But, old age and old eyes got the best of me and instead of getting up at 3:00 a.m. to get to the park so we’d get a good viewing spot, Bob and I were in the Rapid City ER til midnight, waiting to see if I had detached my retina. I had noticed what appeared to be a big spider-shaped floater in my right eye around noon; something I had not seen before. By the evening, I was getting...

Sep 24, 2016 - Hart Ranch, Deadwood and Rapid City

2016-09-24.Hart Ranch and Deadwood We arrived at Hart Ranch RV Resort on September 22nd. Hart Ranch is quite a place; probably the resort with the most going on for it. It has everything you could ever want in any resort; a huge pool, 3 hot tubs, fenced dog park, paintball course, hiking trails, a rodeo arena, community garden, fitness center, gas station, restaurant and store. It is a membership campground and we got to stay here because we belong to Resort Parks International (RPI). There are many full timers but the park is kept so well,...

Sep 23, 2016 - Ellsworth AFB FamCamp and Rapid City SD

Good thing about the base RV park: We get to do our laundry for free, Great grassy spots and areas to walk the dogs, The commissary and base exchange. Bad thing: Really bad internet wifi connections. We burned almost a month's worth of data in just a few days! I will go into more details of each of our side trips on the dates we took them. Mike was stationed here 30 years ago. Of course a lot has changed! It was my first time in SD! Rapid City is the city of the presidents. On the street corners are statues of different presidents. Not...

Sep 3, 2016 - California here we come! er well maybe really Redwood Country Oregon

We left Thursday September 1st for a 2 week vacation/working trip to California. This trip is a no frills mission to find a new redwood supplier since we've had major issues since we started ordering directly from Redwood dealers in California and Oregon. Hopefully this will simplify our Christmas season. Leaving Ohio we had a lot of just plain ordinary until we hit Van Wert and the Wind Turbine fields, just a preview of what was to come later. We did see two trucks filled with tomatoes headed to the factory, so a big indicator that fall...

Aug 8, 2016 - Being a Tourist in South Dakota

Another day and night in Rapid City South Dakota. We were up and on our way by 9 am to Mount Rushmore. How amazing to see the structures in real time. We also drove around some windy roads to see some wildlife. Bison, white tail deer, and donkeys were along the way. We stopped and visited the Crazy Horse Monument which is still a work in progress, but still amazing to see. We then carried on a scenic road towards Deadwood and Stopped in Sturgis to get caught up in the bike rally. We have never seen so many different kinds of bikes and lots...

Jun 9, 2016 - Rapid City, South Dakota

We are still in Rapid City. We have some chores to take care of. Yesterday, we came out of the Black Hills. When we reached Rapid City our brakes were very HOT. I am sure the locals would say – “No Kidding!” There are two big downhills before town. We were 95% sure that the brakes were okay but . . . There is a Dodge dealership in town that we have dealt with before. We made an appointment for eleven o’clock today. By eleven-thirty, we find out that our brakes are in great shape. For $33.50, we have peace of mind! Next on our agenda is...

Jun 1, 2016 - Custer State Park

We've really enjoyed having a day off from driving east and spent the day in our favorite tourist mode, recharging our batteries. The Black Hills have so much to offer, you could stay here a month and not do it all. The scenery is fabulous, an oasis from the surrounding arid grasslands and badlands further east. The carvings of four of our best presidents on Mount Rushmore have lead to many other exhibits and museums with a patriotic theme. We're in the Wild West here and you can go to chuck wagon dinners, ride horses, witness gun fights at...

May 31, 2016 - time to pause

When we left Anacortes WA we had 2100 miles to travel before we got home. Usually, we plan stops along the way to break up such a long drive. There aren't all that many places to linger in the middle of our country that are interesting and that we haven't already spent time visiting. But after three long driving days we need a break. Rapid City is the most eastern part of the Old West. We've spent at least a week here, because there are so many things to see and do, but we've seen and done them already. So we've decided to give ourselves a...

Oct 8, 2015 - Rushmore Shadows Resort

We spent a week at the Rushmore Shadows Resort, south of Rapid City for the week. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we need to update our drivers licenses and our residency status once every 5 years in South Dakota. When we went to renew the licenses, Bev failed her eye exam so she had to get fitted for new glasses and is now restricted to wear them while driving. Bummer. Since my glasses which are primarily for reading and a small Rx for distance, are working well, I decided to get prescription sun glasses only this year. I really enjoy...

Sep 8, 2015 - Drive to Rapid City

So, we felt naked without the Jeep behind us as we pulled into the parking lot for the Best Western to collect Timmie & Esther. Today would be a fairly long drive but we had good roads and very little traffic. We took several breaks for walks and paw stretches and rolled into the KOA, our home for the next eight nights. They have the nice cabins here and Timmie & Esther got themselves settled and are very happy to be in the same area with us, just a short walk away. The KOA doesn't provide bedding or linens so Esther & I scrounged up some...
