Sep 15, 2013 - Traveling the Pink Roads

We are traveling the pink roads this week. Not the blue roads nor the red roads that RVers usually travel, but pink roads made of pink South Dakota granite. Sunday: 9/8 We were going to go into Sioux Falls to see my sister, Bev today. But Ron's back was hurting and I was feeling lazy so we stayed home and took some naps. It was a bit warm, so we had the fans going and it was quite pleasant to just doze away the day. Monday: 9/9 Up and at it early today. First up was to call our mail order meds company and get some meds headed our way. I...

Sep 8, 2013 - Relaxing time in Marion

We slept well on Thursday night and Friday morning found us headed to the next town, Parker, for some blood tests. Thursday afternoon, after we were parked, I spent some time on the phone coordinating the fax for the blood test between our Dr. in AZ and the clinic in Parker. It is getting so I just have to say, “This is JerrieLea”, to the nurses in AZ and they know what is going on. Guess they should as it took about 6 phone calls to get Ron's records sent from Chamberlain to Wickenburg last week. Anyway after the blood test (fasting) we...

Sep 6, 2013 - Ft. Thompson to Marion

This has been a good partial week. Sunday and Monday, of course, we were in a full campground watching all the weekenders. The boat launch was very busy with sometimes 2 boats launching and/or coming in with 2 to 4 boats waiting. The trailer lot was full most of the time. The boats ran the gamut of types. We had huge pontoon party boats that could seat 10 or more, expensive, sleek bass boats all sparkly with matching boat trailers to camo row boats with a little outboard motor attached. And most of them brought in fish. The fish cleaning...

Jun 17, 2012 - A week in Marion

SUNDAY: We went to Ron's boyhood church this morning. Not too many people there as last Sunday was the final Sunday for their Pastor. We did see a beautiful tri-banner made by a local. She had copied a painting from a 15th Century monk of the Trinity and reproduced it in fabric. It was beautiful. After church we went to breakfast at the Corner Cafe – the only cafe in town. Usually they open at 6 but we found out (by trying to go there) that they don't open on Sunday until 9. The rest of the day we spent riding around and getting ready for...

Jun 9, 2012 - Wind and Trains

SATURDAY: Marion City Park, Marion, SD We were up and ready to go before 7 am. It was 7:03 when we pulled out of Elm Creek with a full tank of $3.39 gas and a birthday card mailed to our eldest granddaughter. (She will be 19!!! - How did that happen?) The wind was already blowing from the south so our trip NE between Elm Creek and Columbus was a bit rough. The best thing about Rt 30, The Lincoln Highway, was no trucks. Since it parallels I-80 they prefer to go that way – well, we prefer not to. Rt 30 also parallels multiple train tracks....

Sep 30, 2010 - In Memory

Ron’s mom was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, in Greenwood Cemetery surrounded by her husband, son and daughter. There were many loving relatives including her dear sister, Hulda, who is 98, in attendance. She will be missed. Since then we have gotten ready to move. Our meds did make it to our mail forwarding, we were able to wash clothes and I got a haircut. As I type this, Ron is having a last breakfast with “the boys” at the local café. I am getting ready to pack up the RV and we will hit the road in about an hour. Tonight...

Jun 19, 2010 - Marion Parade

It was a little cool for the parade but we had a ball. We sat with Ron's friends Pete and Lynette and were joined by Bob and Jerry. So lots of comments went back and forth. The pictures really tell the story. A small town parade with Boy Scouts, local merchants and lots of antique and restored cars and tractors. Nothing special and yet very special as it is the fabric of our country.

Jun 19, 2010 - Marion Reunion

Jerry insisted we get to the reunion at 5 so we could find a place to park and talk to people. So we were there at 5. HE didn't show up until almost 6!! Said he got to talking - forgot the time, etc. Oh, well. We did get a great place to park and we did get to talk to people. Marion's reunion is held in the new gym at the school. It was nice as we could spread out a lot more than at Hartford's reunion at the Ramada. The program at the school was just long enough to be interesting and cover all that needed to be covered but short enough...

Jun 17, 2010 - Floods, travel & family

We have done some traveling around the area here. We have been somewhat hampered by flood conditions. Both SD 44 and 42 (main roads) are closed by floods and a lot of the country roads have also been flooded. See pictures. We went to the Ortman Clinic on Wed., Thurs., and Friday. It is a multigenerational Chiropractic Clinic started by Ron’s Great Uncle many years ago. You can read about it here: http://www.ortmanclinic.com/history/history.htm I think it has helped my back – I know it has helped my neck, as it doesn’t grind when I turn my...

Jun 15, 2010 - We finally moved

And it wasn't easy!!! And we only went 36 miles!! We were supposed to move Monday. Our week at the Fairgrounds was over. But it had rained all week and we were on grass. We waited. We himmed. We hawed. We decided to stay another night. We decided to move. We decided to wait and see. Finally about 1 pm we decided to move. I got everything packed inside. Ron got stuff (TV, Water hose, etc) packed up outside. We hooked up and made it withing 2 feet of the solid cement. And we bogged down. Ron backed up but then he couldn't go forward any...

Jul 19, 2008 - Marion, SD

Well, here we are sitting at the city park in the space we think of as "ours". We are backed up to the great view of the lake with weeping willow trees trailing their branches in the water. It makes for lousy internet dish pointing but is wonderfully peaceful. We finally left DeSmet about 11:15 after exchanging a book (more about that later) and fueling up ($4.67 per gallon). The roads (SD 25 & 34 and US 81) were very rough. I had Ron stop at one point so I could check on things in the fiver. Nothing broken - just jiggled around. As we...

Summer 2008

Oct 6, 2007 - Marion, SD

We knew we were getting close to SD because of the pink roads. The rock used on the roads here - either in cement or blacktop - is SD pink granite. It makes the roads pink. We don't have room or weight now - but one of these trips I will get some rock to take out to our lot in AZ. It will go well with the white quartz and the black rocks of the region. We had a tailwind coming north along I-29. We made good time and arrived in Marion about 1 pm. As we drove into the city park where we always stay, we could see several RVs. No matter - there...
